Meerut, Nov 27: When a group of Bajrang Dal men first accosted and then mercilessly beat up a Muslim couple in Khurja in Bulandshahr district last week, thinking the woman was Hindu (she later turned out to be Muslim, but that didn't stop the beatings) and that it was a case of love jihad, the woman had kept quiet about one thing. In court, she has now alleged that the Bajrang Dal men later gang-raped her. Following this, police have changed the original FIR to include gang rape charges.

bajrangiIn an interview to a local Hindi news channel, the woman said on Saturday that the men not only raped her but tried to hang her by a noose one of them made. "My friend and I were sitting in a room when a group of men approached us and asked us why we were sitting there. They started beating both of us and dragged him out of the room before raping me. One of them suggested to the others that we should be hanged by a noose."

According to the woman, the men boasted that they were members of the Bajrang Dal and they could do whatever they wanted. In the video clip of the incident, which has since gone viral, the group of men can be seen telling the two, "Tum log Hindu mohalle ko ganda karte ho (You lot are dirtying a Hindu locality)."

The woman's friend, a Delhi resident, who was the one to be beaten up along with her on November 20, told TOI: "The two of us are friends and had gone to a shop to eat pizza. The goons attacked us and hurled communal abuses. They then dragged me out of the room and beat me. They then took her to another room, where she was confined for about 45 minutes."

A neighbour of the woman said, "After the incident, she came home and told us everything that had happened. Two men had taken her inside the room and three others followed them. In the room, they took turns raping her. They then beat her up even more. Luckily, her face was covered in the video that has gone viral. It was only after she gave her statement in court that the gang rape section was added to the FIR. All she wants now is justice."

The administration, meanwhile, has redoubled efforts after the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) asked the district magistrate (DM) to submit a report. "We are taking this case seriously. We have a zero-tolerance policy towards those who sexually assault women and fan communal hatred. We have already arrested five persons and are searching for the others. Following her statement in court, the woman was sent for a medical examination on Saturday. We will get the results and we will catch all the accused soon," Bulandshahr DM AK Singh said.

Kalaburgi, May 27: Karnataka's Kalaburgi district recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, as per information provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In light of the increasing mercury levels, people here were seen consuming sugarcane juice and cold drinks to beat the heat. Animals and birds could also be seen searching for water for relief from the scorching sun.

Locals of the area requested the district administration to take necessary actions such as spraying water on roads, in order to bring down the temperatures.

"We are facing huge heat waves in this district from the past two days, and even the temperature is around 44 to 45 degrees on a daily basis. So, it is a very alarming situation in Kalaburgi. When we move around the city, we are unable to find water and fresh fruit juice, and even if fresh juice is available, we are afraid of getting infected by COVID-19," said one local.

"If we carry cold water, it gets warm within half an hour, and gets unfit for drinking, and it is tough for us. I request the district administration to look into this matter and do the needful such as spraying water on the roads, etc. for slightest relief," he added.

Ballari, Apr 18: Hosapete town in Ballari district of Karnataka gasped in disbelief as it turned out that 11 members of one single family are positive for the coronavirus.

The whole town has been declared a containment zone and is being surveilled 24X7.

The family includes seven members whose tests returned positive today, three who tested Covid-19 positive on March 30 and one other member subsequently.

The seven who tested positive today had been negative when they were earlier tested along with the others.

They have all now been shifted to isolation wards at the District Hospital in Ballari.

Including this family of 11, Ballari has 13 positive cases so far, with one case each reported from Ballari and Siraguppa towns.

Startled by this sudden upsurge from Hosapete, the district administration has set up 16 fever clinics to screen people and six COVID care centres to treat positive cases. There are two dedicated COVID hospitals, one at Ballari and another at Torangallu in Sandur.

A team of psychological counsellors have been put on duty to provide support to the patients at the isolation centres.

Belgaum, Mar 26: The police on Thursday thrashed people who had gone to offer prayers at a mosque despite the nationwide lockdown in force.
In a video, the police personnel can be seen thrashing the people with batons while they were leaving after offering prayers at a local mosque here.
In another incident in Rajasthan's Pratapgarh, the police made few youngsters hop along a road and even gave the 'murga,' punishment to a few of them for violating the restrictions.
Similarly in Uttar Pradesh's Budaun, the police made people hop along a road with their bags strapped on their backs as a punishment. The people were possibly going to their native places.
In the video of the Budaun incident, a few men can be seen being made to hop along the road with a stick-wielding policeman keeping a watch.
SSP Budaun told ANI that an investigation is being conducted into the incident and expressed an apology for the police's behaviour.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a 21-day countrywide lockdown to check the spread of coronavirus, saying that "social distancing" is the only option to deal with the highly contagious disease.
