Balakot strike helped BJP win LS polls, but Art 370 abrogation wont have same impact says Kharge

Kalaburagi, Oct 20: Claiming that there would be a “surprising result” in these Maharashtra assembly elections, Senior Congress leader M Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday said that Balakot air strike after Pulwama helped BJP in the Lok Sabha polls earlier this year but the revocation of Article 370 will not have same impact in state polls.

Addressing the media personnel here, Mr Kharge said that out of the total 6,83,317 companies that have been shut throughout India after BJP came to power second time, over 1.42 lakh are in Maharashtra. "Farmers also expressed their anguish against Prime Minister Narendra Modi", he said adding that the Congress, NCP and CPM alliance will face the Communal BJP which shall definitely reap 'Surprising result'.

Mr Kharge also came down heavily on PM Modi during his election campaign. He said, "Mr Modi has no sense to talk. In election campaign in Maharashtra he (Mr Modi) declared 'we will not release a drop of water to Pakistan'. How is this statement even relevant to this election? ", Mr Kharge wondered.

"Voters are now very clever, they will definitely judge him", he said.

The Senior congress leader alleged that Mr Modi only talks about revoking Article 370, but never mentions what developmental works have been done in Maharashtra by BJP.

He said the BJP had abandoned its development plan which they claimed before 2014, to which people responded and they won due to it. 'They handled an excellent media political campaign", he added.

Bengaluru, May 7: A 55-year old woman from Davanagere became the 30th COVID-19 related fatality in Karnataka, where a total number of infections has crossed 700-mark, with eight new positive cases being confirmed, the health department said on Thursday.

The deceased woman was a known case of diabetes and hypertension, she was admitted with a complaint of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and was on a ventilator, the department said in its mid-day situation update.

She died today at a designated hospital in Davanagere, it said.

"Eight new positive cases have been reported from last evening to this noon...

Till date 701 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed. This includes 30 deaths and 363 discharges," the update said.

The eight new cases reported include three from Davangere, indulging the deceased patient; also three from Kalaburagi, and one each from Hirebagewadi in Belagavi district and Bengaluru urban.

While four cases are contacts of patients earlier tested positive, three are with the history of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and one is a SARI case.

Five among eight new cases are women and three are men.

Kalaburagi, Apr 17: Hundreds of people participated in the Siddhalingeswara temple chariot festival in Chitapur village on Thursday, violating the lockdown orders.

"Today at 6.30 am, around 100-150 people had come near Siddalingeshwara temple for about 20 mintues and took part in chariot pulling procession," Superintendent of Police Lada Martin said.

A case has been registered against 20 people and further investigation is going to ascertain more details related to the religious gathering.
Meanwhile, a sub-inspector has been suspended.

Thirty-six cases of coronavirus were reported in Karnataka on Thursday, taking the state's tally to 315.

Bengaluru, Mar 23: In the wake of the shutdown in several districts of the state to control the COVID-19 spread, Karnataka government on Monday said food would be provided free of cost through Indira Canteen for the poor who depend on daily wages for their livelihood.

The state-sponsored subsidised 'Indira Canteens' as of now serves breakfast at Rs 5 and lunch and dinner at a cost of Rs 10.

"In the interest of the poor, it has been decided to serve free food for poor. Through Indira Canteen, free food will be served for the entire day for the poor," Yediyurappa told reporters.

The Karnataka government has already announced shutdown of all commercial activities, barring essential services, in nine districts where COVID-19 cases have been reported till March 31.

They are: Bengaluru city, Bengaluru Rural, Mangaluru, Mysuru, Kalaburagi, Dharwad, Chikkaballapura, Kodagu and Belagavi.
