Ballari: BJP leader who faced several criminal cases hacked to death

Ballari, Jun 23: District BJP ST Morcha vice-president Bandi Ramesh, a criminal facing several charges, was killed at Guggarahatti on the outskirts of Ballari city on Thursday afternoon.bandiramesh

Ramesh, 42, and resident of Karimaramma Temple, Indiranagar, Cantonment, Ballari, was a close aide of B Sriramulu, Member of Parliament, Ballari. Police said he had gone on Thursday to Rampura with his followers to the neighbouring town in Chitradurga district.

When they were returning to Ballari, around 3.30pm, they stopped for lunch at Pavan Dhaba. When Ramesh and his supporters were busy ordering food, several people with lethal weapons rushed in and attacked them. They murdered Ramesh and fled in a four-wheeler.

Bandi Ramesh's brother Nagaraj, also involved in criminal activities, had been murdered by their enemies. After Nagaraj's death, Bandi Ramesh took over and had political ambitions. He often spoke about contesting any ST reserved constituency with the support of BJP leaders.

Recently, he was released from Ballari Central Jail on bail, with regard to an attempt to murder case, was in judicial custody for some days. While in jail, he chalked out his political future with his confidants.

S Murugan, IGP, Ballari Range, went to the murder spot. Police were deployed in Indiranagar, Devinagar, SP Circle, Kurihatti and other sensitive areas. After the postmortem, Ramesh's body was handed over to his family.

On Wednesday, he had been actively involved in the birthday celebrations of G Somashaker Reddy, former MLA and ex-chairman, KMF.

Bengaluru, Jul 16: Aiming to forge a citizen-government partnership in combating the Covid pandemic, the Karnataka government is seeking plasma donations from survivors for a token appreciation of Rs 5,000, a minister said on Wednesday.

"I request all those who have recovered from Covid-19 to donate plasma and save lives. As a token of our appreciation, we will give Rs 5,000 to patients who come forward and donate their plasma," said Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar.

He said the battle against the pandemic can only be won through citizen-government partnership.

On Wednesday, Covid cases swelled by 1,975 infections in Bengaluru, ground zero for the pandemic in the southern state, raising its total number of cases to 22,944, out of which 17,051 are active.

In the past 24 hours, the state as a whole registered a record 3,176 cases, raising Karnataka's tally to 47,253, even as 87 people succumbed to the virus.

Meanwhile, Sudhakar said 8,134 booth level workforce will conduct a house to house survey along with other Covid control measures in Bengaluru.

He said many locals and block level officers will be the members of the workforce.

Mangaluru, Jan 9: Customs officials seized 1.575 kg gold, worth about, Rs 63 lakh from three passengers who arrived from Dubai here at Mangalore International Airport on Thursday.

Official sources said that in the first incident, three days back gold weighing 336.7 grams was found in possession of an inbound air passenger. The passenger who arrived by Air India flight from Dubai had concealed the gold in his socks. The value of the seized gold is estimated to be Rs 13.43 lakh.

In the other two instances that took place on January 7, gold weighing 1239 gram and worth about Rs 50.3 lakh was confiscated from two passengers who arrived from Dubai by Air India flight. One of the passengers had attempted to smuggle 523 gram gold in paste form.

Udupi, May 20: All the six fishermen were rescued from a deep-sea fishing boat, which capsized after hitting a rock near Malpe here yesterday. 

The boat was owned by Reshma Kharvi. The incident occurred while the boat was returning after fishing to Malpe harbor. 

The helmsman lost control over the boat after steering got damaged and hit the rock and damaged. 

The crew of another boat which was near to the sinking boat immediately rushed and rescued six fishermen.

Attempts to rescue the sinking boat using the yet another boat could not materialise. 

The loss is said to be about Rs 80 lakh, including Rs. 5 lakh worth items, including fish, net, and other accessories. The boat ventured from Malpe port on May 14.
