Bangladesh cancels downlink permission of Peace TV

Dhaka, Jul 11: Bangladesh today scrapped the downlink permission for 'Peace TV' of Indian Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik, a day after it banned the channel following bizarre allegations that his speeches inspired some of the militants who carried out the country's worst terror attack at a cafe here. The Information Ministry issued the order to cancel the Peace TV's downlink permission needed to broadcast in the country.

"Based on the Cabinet committee's decision, free-to-air TV channel Peace TV's downlink permission has been cancelled for violating downlink conditions," the ministry said in the directive.

A spokesman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Commission (BTRC) said, "Its (Peace TV) downlink permission has been cancelled in line with information ministry's decision."

The action came a day after Cabinet Committee on Law and Order during a special meeting yesterday decided to ban the Mumbai-based preacher's channel.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan had earlier said that Bangladesh's intelligence agencies were investigating the 50-year-old Dr Naik's possible role in the cafe attack.

"He is on our security scanner... Our intelligence agencies are investigating his activities as his lectures appeared provocative," Khan had said.

Khan had said the investigators were also probing Dr Naik's financial transactions in Bangladesh.

Zakir Naik never terrorized anyone nor will he be.....I have seen his many programs....but never ever said anything about terrorism....in fact he asks everyone to love the country...and sacrifice life whenever it is required.....

No free meals at Indira canteens to avoid spread of coronavirus: Yediyurappa

Bengaluru, Mar 24: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who had earlier announced that Indira canteen will supply free meals to the poor and BPL card holders, on Tuesday announced that Indira Canteens will be remain closed as there is fear of spread of the coronavirus as people assemble in large number.

On Monday, he had announced that Indira Canteens would provide food free of cost for the benefit of daily wage workers and poor people in the wake of a complete lockdown.

Asked about the alternative the government would provide, he said, "Closure of canteens is needed to avoid the rush near the canteen as it may lead to problems.

Karnataka ministers to take 30 per cent pay cut for a year

Bengaluru, Apr 9: Ministers and members of Legislature in Karnataka will take a 30 per cent cut each in their salaries and allowances to fund the fight against coronavirus in the state, for a year.

An ordinance to reduce the salaries of ministers and legislators by 30 per cent for one year to meet the exigencies arising out of COVID-19 pandemic was approved by the state cabinet headed by chief minister B S Yediyurappa on Thursday.

"... we have cut by 30 per cent salaries and allowances of all ministers, MLAs, MLCs, also speaker, deputy speaker, chief whip every one for one year from April 1, amounting to Rs 15.36 crore," Law and Parliamentary Affairs minister J C Madhuswamy said.

Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, he said, "we have the consent from all the political parties for this, so we have passed the ordinance today."

The Union Cabinet on Monday had approved a 30 per cent cut in salaries of all Members of Parliament and a two-year suspension of the MP Local Area Development (MPLAD) scheme.
