A 35-year-old bank employee left poorer by Rs 3.4 lakh after he befriended a “woman” on a matrimonial website. Dhananjay Bhat Chitte, a resident of Bengaluru, told the police that he trusted a person, who called herself Shilpa, and paid her money.

After several online interactions and telephone conversations, Mr Chitte asked the woman to marry him. She agreed to take the relationship forward, but later turned to him for financial help citing a medical emergency, said the police.

According to the complaint filed by Mr Chitte, ‘Shilpa’ told him that her brother had been hospitalised for a surgical procedure and the family needed Rs. 3.4 lakh to pay the hospital bill. He agreed to help and transferred the amount to her bank account. A few days later, however, when he tried to reach out to her, he found the mobile switched off. And thus, ‘Shilpa’ was unreachable.

Realising that he had been duped, Mr. Chitte filed a complaint with the Girinagar police, who are now trying to track down the culprit.

Rs 1.45 lakh gift!

In another online scam, a 49-year-old woman was recently duped by a person who befriended her on social media and ‘borrowed’ Rs. 1.45 lakh from her, promising her to send her a New Year’s gift.

The victim, Veena V.C., a resident of HAL II Stage, told the police that the person had introduced himself as Gerald Louis from the United States. In December last, he told her that he would be sending her a New Year’s gift as a token of their friendship.

A few days later, a person contacted her on her mobile phone saying a parcel had arrived for her from the U.S., but to claim it from customs she would have to pay Rs. 1.25 lakh. In a separate transaction, she was made to transfer another Rs. 20,000.

Afterwards, when she did not receive the gift, she contacted Louis, who allegedly threatened to upload some private photos that she had sent him. The cybercrime police are investigating the matter.

Ads wont help to avoid such fraudsters. Because they are acting as intimate one. In relationship, people wont think about such frauds. Only after happening, they will realise that it happen to her/him

Mangaluru, Jun 1: A youth was hacked to death and two others suffered critical injuries following a fight between two gangs at Yekkaru Devaragudde near Kateel under the limits of Bajpe police station last night.

The deceased has been identified as Keertan (20), a resident of Marakada. The injured are Nitin (20) and Manesh (20). It is learnt that old animosity led to the attack and murder.

According to sources, members of both gangs were friends in the past. They had become enemies of each other following a fight regarding sand mining.

Sources said that Keertan, Nitin, and Manesh had reportedly invited their rival gang to Devaragudde for some discussion. A verbal friction arose between the two gangs and it culminated in the attack by the rival gang members with daggers. Keertan reportedly died on the sport. The other two were taken to hospital.

Bengaluru, Jun 7: Suspense over JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda contesting the Rajya Sabha polls from Karnataka with Congress' support continues as KPCC president D K Shivakumar on Saturday said the party has fielded one candidate and the high command will decide on what do with surplus votes.

Mr Shivakumar also said his official takeover as party state unit president is likely to take place on June 14.

"Whatever our national leadership will decide... For now we are fielding only one candidate, regarding surplus votes whatever our high command says, we will abide by it," he said in response to a question about supporting Deve Gowda.

Polls for four Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka is scheduled for June 19.

The Congress, which can win one seat with its strength in the assembly, has fielded veteran party leader Mallikarjun Kharge as the candidate, while the BJP is yet to decide on candidates for two seats it can win.

The JD(S), which has 34 seats in the assembly, is not in a position to win a seat in Rajya Sabha on its own, and will need support from one of the national parties with their surplus votes for this.

Minimum 44 votes are required for candidates to win.

Speculation is rife that congress is likely to support JD(S) with its surplus votes if the regional party fields Mr Gowda, and in return may seek favour during legislative council polls slated later this month.

Though JD(S) legislators are of the unanimous opinion that Mr Gowda should contest Rajya Sabha polls, the 87-year-old leader is said to be undecided and weighing options.

If he contests and wins, this will be the second Rajya Sabha entry for him, the first time being in 1996 as Prime Minister.

June 9 is the last date for filing nominations.

Stating that on June 8, Mallikarjun Kharge will file his nomination for Rajya Sabha polls, DK Shivakumar requested party workers not to come to Congress office or Vidhana Soudha, where the nomination will be filed, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Let your love and affection continue, but let's not create problems by gathering here. After the election is over, and once he (Kharge) wins, you can greet and congratulate him. Let's not bring a bad name to his seniority for not maintaining social distancing by gathering," he said.
