Bantwal: 10-yr-old school boy drown in quarry pit while playing

Mangaluru, Jul 22: A 10-year-old boy on Saturday drowned in a stone-quarry pit at a remote village in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.

The police have identified the victim as Irfan (10), one of the six children of Husain and Zeenath couple from Kanchinadka Padavu near Ira village in Bantwal.

The incident took place when the boy was playing near the quarry-pit in his village along with his friends after returning from the school. His parents had been to a doctor’s clinic as they were suffering from fever.

The quarry pit where the tragedy took place is a prohibited area. Fences have also been erected around the pit. However, the children failed to foresee the danger while playing and one among them slipped into the pit.

Bantwal tahsildar Purandara Hegde, revenue inspector Rama Katipalla among others visited the spot. Bantwal rural police have registered a case.

Death pits

There are several stone-quarry pits around the waste processing plant in Kanchinadka Padavu. Most of the pits were caused by the illegal quarrying in the past. In 2011, then Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, Subodh Yadavu, had ordered to close the dangerous pits.

However, the officials concerned have just erected fences around the pits instead of closing them. During rainy season, these pits will turn into death pits.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: A bandh-like situation prevailed in many parts of Dakshina Kannada on Wednesday as thousands of people closed their shops and business establishments to support the ant-NRC protest at Adyar Kannur in Mangaluru.

The protest is jointly being organised by the various Muslim organisations of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district under the leadership of Muslim Central Committee against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) besides the “categorical mistreatment” of Muslim community at the hands of the police across the country including in Mangaluru.

In Mangaluru city, even though people woke up to a normal Wednesday, by afternoon most of the Muslim-owned shops were closed.

Muslim dominant areas of the district such have observed half-day bandh. In regions like Ullal, Thokkottu, Bantwal, BC Road, Kalladka too a majorty of the Muslim business establishments remained shut afternoon.

Bengaluru, Mar 15: The week-long ban imposed by the Karnataka Government from Saturday is yet to get a total response in the State to fight against the spread of killer disease Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The ban has witnessed a considerable reduction in the travelling public by Bus and train. Bus terminal and Railway stations wore desert look or only a very few public travelling. KSRTC, which was maintaining service for every 10 minutes once between the State Capital and to City of Palaces, was forced to cancel most of the service due to very little patronage. 

"We were left with no option but to cancel the fleet since there are no passengers," sources at the KSRTC Bus terminal told media persons.

Bengaluru, Aug 9: A youth was killed and three others injured as a pillar of an old temple on the outskirts of Bengaluru fell on them as they and five others dug under it in search of treasure, police said on Saturday.

"One treasure hunter got crushed under a pillar, three suffered injuries and have been hospitalised while five are on the run," a police official said.

The incident occurred at a centuries-old Anjaneya temple in Hindiganala village near Hoskote, around 50 km away from the city, on Thursday night.

Suresh, 23, got crushed to death while Manjunath, 23, Srinivas, 22, and Sebastian Raja Rathna, 22, were injured.

Following the unexpected accident, the injured treasure hunters called a 108 ambulance, leading to the entire incident coming to light.

The ambulance staff helped the youth stuck under the temple pillars and took them to hospital.

Police have registered a case under various sections of the Ancient Monuments Act, the Karnataka Treasure Trove Act, and the Indian Penal Code.

According to the official, local youth the village as well as a nearby village were involved in the hunt.

Police are on the lookout for the five treasure hunters on the run.

However, the police official said that it was an old ruined temple and there was nothing there.
