Bantwal, Sept 30: The police have managed to arrest two of a group of miscreants who had razed a grotto of Mother Velankani to the ground at Kuntrakala in Kolnadu village under the limits of Vittla police station in Bantwal taluk.

The police gave the names of the arrested as Jayaram Naik, 45, a Home Guard, and Monappa Naik, 38. The two were among the group of miscreants from the local bhajana mandal which indulged in the act.

The grotto had been installed at Kuntrakala by a church in 1970. Recently, the parish council of the church sought permission of the village panchayat to renovate the grotto.

A section of villagers belonging to Hindu community had opposed renovation. On Thursday, around 20 villagers, including Jayaram and Monappa, went with earth movers, and razed the grotto to the ground. The group then installed an idol of Koragajja Daiva, a Hindu deity at the spot, which is a government land.

Idol removed, cop suspended

Following the arrest of the two, the police removed the idol of the Daiva and handed over the land to the local tahsildar.

Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police B.R. Ravikanthe Gowda suspended a police constable, Ashok for failing to discharge his beat duty properly in the village. “In the preliminary inquiry it’s found that Mr. Ashok was not active in discharging his duty as the beat constable,” Mr. Gowda said.

Udupi, Jan 16: Admar Mutt Junior seer Eshapriya Theertha Swami is all set to take over the reins of Krishna Mutt during the 250th Paryayotsava, scheduled to be held on January 17 and 18.

The uniqueness lies in the fact that the Admar Mutt, one of the Ashta Mutts of Krishna Mutt in this Temple town Udupi, ushers in the new Paryaya cycle (32nd). The Paryaya of outgoing seer Vidyadheesha Theertha Swami of Palimaru Mutt, Admar’s dwandwa (associate) mutt, marks the end of the cycle of eight mutts.

Under the system initiated by the Madhwa philosopher and saint Madwacharya, the seers of Ashta mutts would take turns to worship Lord Krishna every two months. Seer Vadiraja (1481-1601) ended the system and introduced the system of f running the temple administration once in two years.

Mangaluru, June 10: Former minister and Mangaluru MLA U T Khader has hit out at the Karnataka government for what he opined that it is misusing the Epidemic Diseases Act to target opposition parties.

The statement comes in the backdrop of state government’s move to scuttle oath taking ceremony of KPCC president designate D K Shivakumar.

Asserting that the oath taking will be a grand affair, Mr Khader said that Congress will not be browbeaten by the tactics of the BJP.

Citing the blatant violation of all norms laid down under the Act by minister for health B R Sriramulu at Chitradurga earlier this month, Khader told reporters that the BJP is using the Act for its narrow political gains.

“KPCC has twice deferred swearing in ceremony of Shivakumar after being given the oral go ahead,” Khader claimed, adding the state government must explain to people the issue it has with the Congress organising this function.

Referring to the back-to-back virtual political rallies – one for Bihar and the other for Odisha – on Sunday and Monday that union home minister Amit Shah conducted, Khader wondered if the Act did not apply to the BJP leadership.
