Bantwal, Apr 4: A team of policemen, led Assistant Superintendent of Police Saidul Adavat, raided a spot in the Netravathi backwaters at Pudu village in Bantwal taluk on Friday and seized 35 lorry-loads of sand.
The raid was conducted on a tip-off about a group attempting to illegally extract sand from the riverbed.
As the police arrived, the people involved in extracting sand escaped. The extracted sand was filtered and then sold at high prices in the market.
3 tipper lorries worth Rs 24 lakh, one L&T excavator worth Rs 55 lakh, one Kobelco excavator worth Rs 80 lakh, a generator worth Rs 6 lakh, a sand filtering unit worth Rs 80,000 and 35 loads of sand worth Rs1.10 lakh was seized, inform the police.
