Mangaluru, Jan 24: Ahmed Basheeer (48), who was hacked to death by a gang of communal goons earlier this month at Kottara Chowki area in the city, was in fact a random victim of conspiracy hatched by jailbirds, according to police.

A resident of Akashbhavan, Basheer was running a fast food restaurant near Koattara Chowki for past one year. He breathed his last on January 7 at a hospital in the city, four days after a gang of miscreants attacked him with sharp weapons on January 3.

Within days after the murder, the police had managed to catch six accused: Kishan Poojary, Shrijit, Dhanush Poojary, Sandesh Kotyan, Pushparaj and Lathesh. A few among them are Keralites who had come here only with the intention of killing a Muslim man to create unrest.

Speaking to media persons on Wednesday, T R Suresh, the Commissioner of Mangaluru City Police, said that after subjecting the above accused to rigours interrogation, the investigators came to know that they had just executed a conspiracy hatched in the prison on the same day.

The police have identified the conspirators as Mithun alias Kalladka Mithun (28), son of Narayana Poojary from Goltamajalu in Bantwal; Tilakraj Shetty (28), son of Vishwanath Shetty from Akashbhavan, Mangaluru; Raju alias Rajesh (21), son of Shekhara Poojary from Farangipet; and Anup (30), son of K Narayana from Akashbhavan, Manglauru. Among them the first three were in Mangaluru prison for various reasons while the fourth miscreant played the role of coordinator between the conspirators and murderers.

After a gang of miscreants murdered Deepak Rao at Katipalla on January 3, Kalladka Mithun wanted to eliminate at least one Muslim man. He discussed the plan with two other inmates – Tilakraj and Raju. The trio managed to contact Anup, a resident of Akashbhavan and convinced him to arrange a few “activists who love to kill Muslims”. Anup, who knew that Basheer goes home alone after closing his restaurant, chose him as a target and guided the killers. The plan was executed on the same night.

Mr Suresh said that the names of the conspirators have now been included in the murder case. Though Kalladka Mithun, Tilakraj and Raju were lodged in Mangaluru prison when they hatched the conspiracy, they were shifted to Bengaluru, Ballari and Belagavi jails respectively following a clash in the jail.

The main accused Kalladka Mithun is a notorious communal goon and member of several saffron groups. If the police interrogate him properly he may reveal the name of a powerful man from Kalladka.

Bengaluru, May 27: Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Wednesday hit out at Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa-led Karnataka government for allegedly "betraying" the people by not fulfilling its Rs 1,610 crore COVID-19 package promise.

Taking a dig at Yediyurappa over the matter, the Congress leader tweeted, "Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa has betrayed people by not fulfilling his Rs 1,610 crore package promise. He seems to be following his @BJP4India leader @PMOIndia @narendramodi."

"Crisis and vulnerability should not be misused for political gains and BJP for India is insensitive towards the same," the former Karnataka Chief Minister said.

On May 6, Yediyurappa had urged migrant workers to stay back as construction activities have resumed and announced a Rs 1,610 crores COVID-19 financial package for the state.

"A package of Rs 1,610 crores will be released as COVID-19 financial relief. One time compensation of Rs 5,000 will be given to 2,30,000 barbers and 7,75,000 drivers," the Chief Minister said.

Referring to media reports, Siddarmiah cornered the state government for asking the licence to release funds for unorganised sector workers.

"How can we expect washermen and other unorganised sector workers to have licence for their work?" he asked.

It looks like Karnataka Chief Minister is very far from reality, he added.

We, the undersigned express our solidarity with Dr Zafarul Islam Khan, renowned scholar, journalist and presently Chairman of the Delhi Minorities Commission.

We strongly condemn the continued media trial and targeting of Dr Zafarul Islam Khan for his Facebook post thanking Kuwait for expressing solidarity with Indian Muslims. In his Facebook post, he mentioned the appalling deterioration of human rights of Indian Muslims who have been targeted by Hindutva bigots. A few politicians with ulterior motives and news channel anchors known for spreading bigotry and Islamophobia have mischievously sought to misinterpret his statement and ridiculously label him as anti-Hindu and anti-India.

He has only reiterated what many citizens of India, public figures, international institutions, various European governments, the United States of America and United Nations human rights mechanisms have repeatedly underlined their concern at the increasing human rights abuse and violations of religious minorities in India.

Dr Zafarul Islam Khan is a man of integrity. He is a scholar who is known to stand up for constitutional freedoms and values.

His work as the Chairman of Delhi Minorities Commission has been warmly applauded by human rights activists and NGOs across different faiths. His timely interventions on problems of minorities in Delhi have made him a respectable figure among not only Muslims but Sikh, Christians, Jains and Parsis. He is a humanist in the truest sense of the word.

The hateful propaganda against Dr Khan is one more illustration as how certain Indians fail to differentiate between Hinduism, a religion and Hindutva which is a supremacist political ideology.

Dr Zafarul Islam Khan is a leading Indian intellectual whose niche area is Islamic studies and Arab world. He enjoys great respect in the Arab and Muslim world for his understanding and knowledge. He is an alumni of the esteemed Jamia Al-Azhar and Manchester University.

Dr Khan is known for taking bold public positions. He was the first Muslim scholar in the world who denounced ISIL, which later became IS or ISIS. He issued a statement opposing the barbaric crimes of ISIL (IS or ISIS) and Boko Haram against minorities. He takes strong stands against extremism of all sorts. That makes him a prominent critic of RSS.

Dr Khan is a scholar ambassador and earned international prestige for the India. Any attack and targeting of him, is actually an insult to Indian constitution and ethos.

We demand the appropriate authorities of the Government of India take strong legal action against those who are distorting Dr Khan’s Facebook post, and spreading vicious false propaganda against him.

New Delhi, Apr 15: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday urged the government to organise flights to bring back Indian workers stuck in the Middle East and desperate to return.

He said the workers are in deep distress there due to shutting of businesses in the Middle East due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The Covid19 crisis and shutting of businesses in the Middle East have left thousands of Indian workers in deep distress and desperate to return home.

"The Government must organise flights to bring home our brothers and sisters most in need of assistance, with quarantine plans in place," he said on Twitter.
