Mangaluru, Jun 13: Known for criticizing his own party leaders in recent years, former union minister B Janrdhana Poojary on Tuesday indirectly backed the BJP’s agitation against Mangaluru North MLA B Mohiuddin Bava, whose recent birthday gift to schoolkids sparked a political row.Untitled-1 copy

Mr Bava had recently celebrated his birthday by freely distributing 3.08 lakh note books to students from class 1 to PU in his constituency by spending Rs 52.36 lakh from his pocket. The front cover of the notebook says it is a gift from Mr Bava. The inside pages have photographs of the MLA’s visit to different schools and his interaction with students.

The BJP has objected to this birthday gift to kids alleging that it amounted to Mr. Bava “misusing his authority as a legislator to meet his political ends” as the books carry photo of Mr Bava.

When media persons sought his opinion on the row during a press conference, Mr Poojary said that though he was not against book distribution, he was not ready to endorse Mr Bava’s decision to print the latter’s photo on the cover page of the books.

“Only a person, who believes that he is an unknown entity in his constituency, will do it. I too had distributed books, but without printing my picture. It seems that Mr Bava is trying to introduce himself to the people of his constituency. It means that he is an unknown entity in his constituency and people do not know him,” Mr Poojary said in one breath.
