BCCI elections on hold after SC reveals Srinivasan's name in probe

November 15, 2014

BCCI electionsNew Delhi, Nov 15: N Srinivasan, the ICC chairman and BCCI president-in-exile, Indian Premier League CEO Sundar Raman, Srinivasan's son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings team principal Gurunath Meiyappan, Raj Kundra, co-owner of Rajasthan Royals, and three international cricket players are among those that India's Supreme Court has disclosed as having been probed by the Justice Mukul Mudgal Committee into illegal activity in the IPL.

Interestingly, Justice TS Thakur on Friday said that reports regarding players being withheld for the time being but that the names of the three players were released inadvertently, thinking that they were non-players.

Six names are yet to be revealed and the next hearing will be on November 24. The SC has ordered that the misdemeanours and activities of all non-players in the probe be named public. Aditya Verma, the Cricket Association of Bihar chief and petitioner into the spot-fixing and betting case, told reporters outside the SC that information about five big names has been held back as per the court's direction. The officials named now have four days to file objections to the SC.

The apex court has told the BCCI that it cannot hold elections until these issues are addressed, the result of which is that the elections have been pushed back until January.

The SC was set to see the details on November 10 but was informed by Raju Ramchandran, representing the Mudgal committee, that the sealed envelope report ran in 30 pages wherein no individuals are named but codes are used. Apparently the court wanted to see the report in detail before beginning the hearing of the concerned parties.

The SC has said the Justice Mukul Mudgal Committee report on its investigation into 13 persons, submitted at the beginning of the month, includes mention of misdemeanors (by officials) which cannot be held back. The extent of their roles have not been discussed in court yet. The will take some time to reach lawyers/parties. Supreme Court has ordered certain parts be blacked out before registry makes it available.

SC adds cricketers (refers to individuals as I1 I2 I3) should be left out ambit of discussion for now.

This comes nearly six months after the SC asked IPS officer BB Mishra and the police departments of Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai to assist the investigation into the corruption scandal. The SC empowered the probe panel to carry out search and seize but refrained it from making any arrest on its own. In April, the SC dealt a severe blow to the BCCI when it rejected a three-member committee selected by the board to investigate the IPL spot-fixing and betting charges. The court then said if the Mudgal committee that conducted an initial probe into the allegations is willing, it would hand over further investigation to the same panel.

In early September, the SC had given the Mudgal Committee two months to finish its investigation IPL betting and match-fixing controversy. The committee had submitted its interim report to the apex court on August 29.

The IPL spot-fixing scandal broke out during the 2013 IPL when India fast bowler Sreesanth, along with two other Rajasthan Royals players Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan and 11 bookies, were arrested for alleged spot-fixing in the tournament. The contracts of the tainted players were terminated by their franchise, which also lodged a criminal complaint against them. It snowballed into a crisis for the BCCI when Meiyappan was arrested on charges of betting on May 26, 2013.

An internal probe panel, originally comprising former judges T Jayaram Chouta and R Balasubramanian and the then BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale, was constituted on May 28 to investigate the allegations against Meiyappan, who maintained his innocence after getting bail. Srinivasan, who owns the CSK franchise, remained defiant through the turmoil and refused to resign but had to step aside as BCCI president after a stormy emergent board meeting on June 2 where Dalmiya took charge of an interim arrangement to run the board's affairs pending the inquiry. The upheaval led to the resignations of board secretary Sanjay Jagdale and treasurer Ajay Shirke, who asked for Srinivasan's resignation on moral grounds.

Srinivasan, 68, had on June 2, 2013 decide to temporarily step aside from his position as BCCI president after Meiyappan was arrested for allegedly betting in the IPL.

New Delhi, Jun 10: Former India skipper Rahul Dravid has praised the batting of MS Dhoni during the backend of a match, saying that the wicket-keeper often played during the period as if the result did not really matter to him.

Dravid also said that in pressure-cooker situations, not worrying about consequences can help players bring out the best in themselves.

"You watch MS Dhoni play during the backend of a match when he was at his best, you always felt like that he is doing something really important to him but he is playing it like the result does not really matter to him," Dravid told Sanjay Manjrekar during a videocast hosted by ESPNCricinfo.

"I think you need to have that or you need to train for it. It is a skill that I never had. The consequences of any decision mattered to me. It would be interesting to ask MS Dhoni that is this something that has come naturally to him or did he work on this during his career," he added.

Dhoni made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in 2004, but he truly arrived in the series against Pakistan in 2005 when he scored 148 runs in the second ODI of the six-match series at Vishakapatnam.

He is the only captain to win all major ICC trophies (50-over World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy). Under his leadership, India also managed to attain the number one ranking in Test cricket.

He first led an inexperienced Indian side to the T20 World Cup triumph in 2007. He then took over ODI captaincy, but he had to wait for leading the Test side as Anil Kumble was doing the duties in the longest format.

Over his career, Dhoni has been reowned for his finishing skills and he is often viewed as the best finisher that the game has ever seen.

In December 2014, Dhoni announced his retirement from the longest format of the game.

Then in 2017, Dhoni handed over the captaincy reins to Virat Kohli in the 50-over format.

Dhoni was slated to return to the cricket field on March 29 in the IPL's opening match between CSK and Mumbai Indians. However, the tournament has been suspended indefinitely as a precautionary measure against coronavirus.

Thirty-eight-year-old Dhoni has been currently enjoying some time away from the game. He last played competitive cricket during the 2019 World Cup.

Dhoni recently had to face criticism for his slow batting approach during India's matches.

Earlier this year, Dhoni did not find a place in the list of BCCI's centrally contracted players from October 2019 to September 2020.

Vitoria, Jul 20: Lionel Messi won a record seventh top scoring title in the Spanish league after netting twice in Barcelona's 5-0 rout of Alav s in the final round.

Messi ended with 25 goals, four more than Karim Benzema, who did not score in Real Madrid's 2-2 draw at Legan s.

Messi is the first player to finish as the league's top scorer in seven different seasons. He reached the milestone despite missing games because of an injury early in the season. The Argentine's 25 goals came in 33 matches.

Messi was tied with Telmo Zarra with six scoring titles. He has also now equaled Hugo Sanchez's feat of four straight top-scorer trophies.

"Individual achievements are always secondary," Messi said on Sunday.

"I wished it could have come along with the league title."

This is also the third successive season that Messi finished with the most assists 21 in the league.

Ansu Fati, Luis Su rez and Nelson Semedo also scored Sunday for Barcelona, which had already secured second place behind Madrid.

Fati opened the scoring in the 24th minute, Messi added to the lead 10 minutes later and Su rez closed the first-half scoring in the 44th. Semedo got on the board in the 57th and Messi in the 75th to help Barcelona rebound from a 2-1 home loss to Osasuna.

"Today things were different," Messi said.

"The team showed better attitude and commitment. It was an important step forward for us ahead of what's left in the season."

Barcelona now turns its focus to its Aug. 8 home game against Napoli in the round of 16 of the Champions League. The first leg, played before the break, ended 1-1.

Barcelona coach Quique Seti n finished under pressure after the team relinquished a two-point lead over Madrid when the league resumed following the pandemic break. It was four points back before Madrid's match at Legan s.

Barcelona defender Cl ment Lenglet had to be substituted early in the second half because of an apparent muscle injury.

Alav s, sitting in 15th, had already done enough to stay up.

BAR A "B" TEAM

American winger Konrad de la Fuente scored twice as Barcelona's "B" team beat Valladolid B to keep alive its hopes of reaching the second division next season. The victory put Barcelona in the second round of the promotion playoffs.

The 19-year-old De la Fuente, who recently had his contract with Barcelona extended through the 2021-22 season, scored in each half.

New Delhi, Jun 13: West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has said that wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni is the biggest superstar in cricket and is one of the easiest guys to interact with.

Bravo was doing an Instagram live chat with former Zimbabwe pacer Pommie Mbangwa and it was then that the all-rounder was asked to talk about his stint with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

"I think a lot of credit for CSK's success has to be given to Dhoni and Fleming, obviously the owners, they trust both Fleming and Dhoni, so there is no outside interference when it comes to decision making, both are very big students of the game, players love MS and it's an environment and franchise that allows you to be you," Bravo told Mbangwa during the chat.

"MS Dhoni is the biggest superstar in cricket and in our team. He was one of the easiest people to interact with, outside of the cricket field, he is like playing video games, his door is open at all times, whenever you talk about the biggest superstar and then you think a person like Dhoni is the most humble of them all. CSK is a special team and we have the most loyal fans," he added.

Bravo has been with the CSK since 2011. He has played a total of 104 matches for the franchise, picking up 121 wickets.

The all-rounder has also managed to win the Purple Cap (most wickets in IPL) two times (2013 and 2015).

CSK has won the IPL thrice (2010, 2011 and 2018) and all the titles have come under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

Thirty-eight-year-old Dhoni has been currently enjoying some time away from the game. He last played competitive cricket during the 2019 World Cup.

Dhoni had to face criticism for his slow batting approach during India's matches in the high-profile game.

This year, Dhoni did not find a place for himself in the BCCI's centrally contracted players list.

The board had released the list of central contract list of players for the period from October 2019 to September 2020.

Dhoni is the only captain to win all major ICC trophies (50-over World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy).

Under his leadership, India also managed to attain the number one ranking in Test cricket.

He would have been leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) if the Indian Premier League (IPL) had commenced from March 29.

However, the tournament has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
