Beary to be optional third language in schools soon?

After successfully bringing out the first ‘Beary-Kannada-English’ dictionary, the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy has proposed the introduction of the dialect as an optional third language in schools across Karnataka. The Academy is now planning to bring out a Beary grammar book, after which it may exert pressure on the government to consider the new demand.

The state government has already paved way for Tulu and Konkani to be studied academically as third languages, and the students are doing well.

President of the Academy B A Mohammed Haneef said: “There are about 15 to 20 lakh Beary language speakers in Karnataka. A language like Sanskrit, spoken by about 15 thousand people, has a national recognition today. Beary also needs to be recognized and preserved. The best way to do it is to educate children who can carry it forward.”

“Once the grammar book is released, we will approach the Department of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT). We hope to look into the problems of teaching Beary in schools and fix them in the coming days with the help of the state government. We will hopefully be able to get Beary as an optional third language by the next academic year,” Mr Haneef told coastaldigest.com.

He added that the youngsters are the ones who can help in saving a language or a culture and there is no better way to than to get it as a part of their education to instill it in them.

Youngsters of Mangaluru, who belong to the Beary speaking community feel the same. “I would have learnt the language better and explored it more if it was a school subject. Beary has a lot of literary works that we do not read as we tend to read English or sometimes the languages we had in schools,” said Zayn (name changed for anonymity). “As residents of Dakshina Kannada, we hear Tulu and Malayalam spoken everywhere. Beary borrows words mainly from these. Grammatically, it is closely relatable to Tulu and will hence be very easy to be picked up too. Children should be encouraged to learn Beary,” said another Beary boy.

“A dictionary consisting of 860 pages and about 20 thousand Beary words has been published successfully by the Academy. This is a big step for the Academy and will also help preserve the language,” said Chandrahas Rai, the ex-registrar of the Academy.

Should not give choice to select optional language. Because students will not learn new language. In many cases, students will choose only thier safe zone language, which is they learnt already

Bengaluru, Feb 4: The CBI has booked Karnataka cadre senior IPS officers Hemant Nimbalkar and Ajay Hilori along with eight others in connection with Rs 4,000-crore I-Monetary Advisory (IMA) scam in which gullible investors were allegedly cheated in the name of Islamic banking, officials said on Tuesday.

The move came after the CBI received an approval from the Karnataka government to proceed with investigation into alleged role of 1998-batch IPS officer Nimbalkar and 2008-batch IPS officer Hilori, they said.

Along with the two officers, the agency has also named the company IMA, its founder Mansoor Khan and others in the case.

Bengaluru, Apr 27: Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Monday demanded that the Karnataka government announce a special package for farmers who are on the verge of quitting agriculture as their profession following losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Please announce special package for the farmers to bail them out of the loss due to the lockdown.

Drop many of the schemes in the budget but don't leave the farmers in distress," Gowda said in his letter to Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa.

The JD(S) supremo said the way relief has been announced for the milk producers by procuring the unsold milk and distributing it to the slum dwellers, the same assistance should be provided to the farmers of the state.

"If you don't come forward to assist the farmers, then they will be forced to sell their land," Gowda cautioned the Chief Minister.

The former prime minister said the farmers are on the verge of falling in the debt trap and may be compelled to take the extreme step of suicide due to the losses.

Gowda said the farmers are unable to sell their crop because they are not getting proper price for their produce and are selling their crop at a throwaway price to minimise their losses.

"In just one month farmers reached the brink of bankruptcy as they are unable to sell the standing crops in lakhs of acres of land," Gowda said.

The JD(S) supremo has been championing the cause of farmers in the state and highlighting their sufferings.

On April 3 Gowda has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to look into the plight of farmers, labourers and the middle class people due to the lockdown.

"In such times of crisis, we should see to it that there is no disruption in farming activities by ensuring proper marketing channels to agricultural produce, especially perishables.

Only then we can sustain our long battle against this pandemic," Gowda said in a tweet.

Bengaluru, Apr 19: Former Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Sunday thanked Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa for backing his family regarding his son Nikhil s wedding, which drew flak for allegedly violating lockdown norms.

Asserting that social distancing was maintained during the wedding, the JD(S) leader in a series of tweets hit out at those accusing his family of violating lockdown norms, by stating that they were doing it out of "political hate".

"Despite maintaining social distancing and following rules during Nikhil's marriage, there are discussion that norms were not followed.

Because of political hate, poisonous comments are being made about an auspicious event, but Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa by rejecting all this is standing by the truth," Kumaraswamy said in a tweet in Kannada.

He said, "heartfelt thanks to Yediyurappa for his statement that a big political family in the state has conducted the marriage ceremony in a simple way."

Nikhil, the grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, entered wedlock on Friday at a Bidadi farmhouse with Revathi, the grandniece of former Congress minister M Krishnappa.

On the day of the marriage several posts on social media, also media reports had criticised the Gowda family for violating locdown norms and social distancing during the event.

Coming to the defence of Gowda family, Yediyurappa in response to a question on Saturday told reporters "They (family) had all the permissions and the event was held in a simple fashion. There's no need to discuss this.

"Despite having many relatives, they stuck to the limitations. For this, I congratulate them," he had said.

Stating that lockdown rules were followed during Nikhil's marriage, Kumaraswamy said, "By looking for politics in Nikhil's marriage, certain faulty minds on social media are spewing venom that is in their mind."

Gowda family had scaled down Nikhil's wedding, which was earlier planned in a 95-acre land near Ramanagara with a lavish set, with lakhs of party workers and well-wishers in attendance, followed by a grand reception in Bengaluru.
