Beef ban: UP declares compensation for victim's family; violence in neighbourhood

Lucknow, Oct 1: Two days after a man was lynched to death by a mob accusing him of storing beef at home in Bisada village falling in Greater Noida region, the state government announced that the victim's family will be given a compensation of Rs 10 lakh. Senior police officials reiterated that beef is not banned in Uttar Pradesh. The area which falls under the Gautam Budhnagar district continued to be tense after the Monday night killing which also saw the victim Mohd Ikhlaq's son Danish, being beaten up badly.

beefChief minister Akhilesh Yadav directed police and administrative officials to provide security to the affected family and speedy action against those who are still at large. Six arrests have been made so far and a hunt is on to nab others involved in the incident. Akhilesh, while insisting that those involved in the incident should not be spared, directed that those trying to spread rumours be also booked. DGP Jagmohan Yadav said: "We are probing the entire case. How it started and how the victim was killed with stones and sticks. Who organised it, everything will be out soon".

As rumours of beef being consumed spread, violence was reported from areas neighbouring Bisada village, including Ooncha Amirpur village where a big crowd clashed with police on Tuesday. A large police force was rushed in from neighbouring districts, and was deployed in the area to control any fallout of the incident with communal overtones. SP Rural, Sanjay Singh, said: "A meeting was held at the village temple where some people claimed that Ikhlaq had committed cow slaughter and the carcass can be seen in the neighbourhood. A crowd gathered and it was decided to teach Ikhlaq a lesson. The accused have confessed to their act".

Muscat, May 18: An Air India special flight left for Hyderabad with a total of 182 stranded Indians from Oman on Monday.

"IX 818 departed for Hyderabad with total 182 passengers. We again express our gratitude to Omani & Indian authorities and wish all the passengers, safe journey home," Indian embassy in Oman said in a tweet.

Under the Vande Bharat Mission, Air India operated repatriation flight from Oman on Sunday to Kerala. It had brought back 183 Indians.

The phased evacuation is being done under the Centre's 'Vande Bharat' mission whose second phase started from May 16.

In order to facilitate the return of stranded Indian nationals in Oman, the Indian government has decided to operate more special flights to Bangalore, Calicut, Delhi, Kannur, Kochi, and Gaya on May 20, 21, 22 and 23.

Under the second phase, a total of 149 flights, including feeder flights, are expected to be operated to bring back stranded Indians from 40 countries.

Kashmir, Jun 14: An Army personnel was killed and two others were injured as Pakistani troops opened fire and shelled areas along the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Sunday.

This is the third fatality in the Pakistani firing and shelling on forward posts and villages in the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri this month.

The officials said the latest firing and shelling from across the border took place in Shahpur-Kerni sector on Saturday night, drawing strong retaliation by the Indian Army.

Three Indian Army personnel were injured in the Pakistani firing and were immediately evacuated to hospital, where one of them succumbed to injuries, the officials said.

They said the casualties suffered by the Pakistani Army in the retaliatory action were not known immediately.

On June 4, havaldar P Mathiazhagan fell to Pakistani firing in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district, while on June 10, Naik Gurcharan Singh lost his life in a similar incident in Rajouri sector.

Kochi, Jul 30: The Kerala High Court on Thursday refused to grant the extension for the stay of a 74-year-old US citizen, Johnny Paul Pierce, who had earlier said that he felt safer to remain in India than in the United States amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The single-judge bench of Justice CS Dias, which considered the writ petition, observed that the grant or extension of visa to foreign nationals fall exclusively within the domain of the Government of India (GoI) and that judicial review in such matters is minimal.

The power of the GoI to expel foreigners is absolute and unlimited, the bench said.

"In view of the categoric declaration of law by the Supreme Court, the plea of the petitioner to permit him to stay back in India cannot be accepted, as it falls within the purview of the guidelines and the discretion of the Government of India," the order said.

"The petitioner cannot be heard that the guidelines/policies/regulations formulated by the Government of India, that an American national though has been granted a visa having validity of five years has to leave India within 180 days, is irrational or unreasonable," it added.

The High Court, which was hearing a plea to permit the US citizen to stay in India for a further period of six months, said that the petitioner does not have a case that there is an infraction of Article 21 of the Constitution of India.

"The petitioner was well aware of the visa conditions when he arrived in India, and it is too late in the day for him to raise a grievance on the visa conditions," the bench said noting that the petitioner's love for India was heartening.

The High Court also directed the Foreigners Registration Officer to consider the petitioner's representation within a period of two weeks in accordance with the applicable guidelines and policies.
