Bengaluru bandh against Modi called off after High Court terms it illegal

Bengaluru, Feb 3: The Bengaluru Bandh on Sunday was called off soon after the Karnataka High Court declared it unconstitutional and illegal.

Vatal Nagaraj of Kannada Okkuta, which had called for the bandh, said on Friday, "We welcome the court order. But we have decided to observe Sunday as a black day. The Okkuta will take out a protest march from Freedom Park to Palace Grounds demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention on the Mahadayi issue."

He accused the BJP of conspiring against Kannada activists and preventing them from staging protests on the Mahadayi issue.

Earlier in the day, the high court directed the state government and law enforcement agencies to take preventive measures to ensure that commerce, industry, public transport and the common man are not affected by the bandh.

A division bench of acting Chief Justice H G Ramesh and Justice P S Dinesh Kumar issued the directions while hearing a public interest litigation filed by Shraddha Parents Association seeking directions to restrain the proposed bandh called by Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha, a pro-Kannada outfit.

They had called for the bandh seeking Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention to settle the Mahadayi water dispute. The PM is expected to arrive in Bengaluru on February 4.

The high court referred to a ruling of the Supreme Court which had declared bandhs as illegal and unconstitutional and had observed that they violate the constitutional rights of citizens.

The petitioner had also sought for directions to Vatal Nagaraj and similar protesting groups to deposit Rs 500 crore as security.

Mangaluru, Mar 23: Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Monday announced to enhance surveillance along the coastline of Karnataka to strengthen security.

It has tasked its hovercraft in New Mangalore, and high-speed patrol vessels and interceptor boats along the coastline for ensuring foolproof security of the uninhabited islands, Deputy Inspector General S B Venkatesh, Commander, Coast Guard, Karnataka, said in a release today.

The amphibious hovercraft have been deployed for near to coast patrol, to facilitate smooth execution of search and rescue operations and security cover over land and riverine route. Please log in to get detailed story.

Bengaluru, Jan 10: Demanding the setting up of a House Committee to probe the Mangaluru violence, former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Friday released multiple videos of the clashes that broke out during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protest that claimed two lives on December 19.

Janata Dal-Secular leader further demanded suspension of Police Commissioner PS Harsha and insisted that House Committee consisting of members of all the parties should be formed to probe into Mangaluru violence and said that magisterial inquiry ordered by the state government cannot be trusted.

"Constitute a House committee and produce the fact. The main culprit is the commissioner of Mangaluru, remove the officer as he is the main culprit. I am going to take this issue on the floor of the House." Kumaraswamy said during a press conference here.

Two people were killed in Mangaluru in the alleged police firing after protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act turned violent.

The Act grants Indian citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who entered India on or before 31, 2014.

Udupi, Jun 28: A student appearing for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exams in Kaup taluk of Udupi district has tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection.

Officials of the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and Udupi District Health and Family Welfare Department have confirmed the report. 

The 16-year-old girl had appeared for the Kannada and Mathematics exams on June 25 and 27 respectively. 

Her throat swabs were sent for testing on June 27 after her father tested covid-19 positive. Today she too obtained positive report.  

The student is unlikely to appear for the science paper on June 29.

Meanwhile, health officers have ruled out the possibility of subjecting other students to covid-19 test as all necessary precautions such as physical distancing and usage of sanitization were taken in the examination centre.
