Bengaluru, Chennai suicide capitals of India; family problem major reason

January 9, 2017

New Delhi, Jan 9: Chennai and Bengaluru have once again retained the dubious distinction of being the suicide capitals of the country, even as the metro cities recorded a minor increase in incidents of people taking their lives.

suicideWhile Chennai has reported a slight increase, suicides in Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai have shown a drop.

According to the Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2015 published last week, 53 metro cities, which have a population of more than 10 lakh, reported 19,665 suicides in the country as against 19,597 in 2014.

“The number of suicides in 53 mega cities shows a mixed trend during 2012 to 2015. It shows an increasing trend from 2012 (19,120) to 2013 (21,313). However, a decline of 8.1% is seen in 2014 over 2013. A steep rise of 11.5% was observed in 2013 over 2012,” the report stated.

An analysis of the figures showed that Chennai had the highest incidents of 2,274 suicides in 2015 as against 2,214 in 2014, a 2.7% increase.

However, suicides in Bengaluru had a 2.7 decline — from 1,906 to 1,855 — while Delhi had 1,553, down from 1,847, which was a decrease of 15.9%. Mumbai, which is the fourth in the table, had 1,122 suicides, a decrease of 6.2%.

The IT capital Bengaluru (87) and financial capital Mumbai (86), where a number of people migrate for jobs, recorded the highest number of suicides due to unemployment.

Only Bhopal was ahead of these cities with 173 suicides due to joblessness. Meerut (86) and Pune (83) were other toppers, while Chennai had 41 and Delhi 19 such cases.

Major causes

According to the report, family problems (other than marriage-related issues) were major reasons behind suicides in the cities, accounting for 34% (6,682), followed by illnesses at 17.2% (3,379). However, 1,019 victims have committed suicide in cities due to marriage-related issues, accounting for 5.2% of the total suicides in the cities.

While Chennai had the highest number (870) of suicides due to family problems, Bengaluru was a close second at 815. Those who committed suicide due to an illness was also high — Chennai (448) and Bengaluru (229).

In these four cities, 186 people committed suicide due to bankruptcy, while another 146 took their life due to unemployment and 21 due to poverty. Chennai had 154 suicides due to bankruptcy, while Bengaluru had 21, Mumbai (6) and Delhi (5).

Bengaluru also topped the list among the four cities in suicides over love affairs at 73, followed by Chennai (61), Delhi (39) and Mumbai (30).

Suicide is not a solutions. Do not waste your precious life. There is a life after death. Those who find suicide as a solution, they will get sever punishment in the hereafter. Please read the one & only noble scripture from the creator \Al Qur'an\" and try to understand the purpose of life. Worship the creator instead of worshiping the thing created by the man."

Kolkatta, Mar 19: A local leader of BJP has been arrested for organising a cow urine consumption event in Kolkata, claiming that it will protect people from coronavirus or cure those already infected, leading to a civic volunteer falling ill after drinking it.

The police said that 40-year-old Narayan Chatterjee, who had on Monday organised a cow worship programme at a cowshed and distributed cow urine, was arrested following a complaint filed by the victim.

He had vouched for its "miraculous" properties while offering gaumutra to others.

A civic volunteer, who was on duty near the cow shed also consumed gaumutra and fell sick on Tuesday, following which he lodged a complaint with the police against Chatterjee.

Reacting to the arrest, the state BJP leadership criticised the state government.

"Chatterjee had distributed cow urine, but he didn't fool people in consuming it. When he distributed it he clearly said it was cow urine, he didn't force anyone to drink it. It has not been proved whether it is harmful or not.

"So how can just police arrest him without any reason. This is completely undemocratic," state BJP General Secretary Sayantan Basu said.

West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh has said there is no harm in drinking cow urine and he has no qualms in admitting he consumes it.

His party colleague and MP Locket Chatterjee, however, differed, terming it an "unscientific belief" that should be shunned.

The cow urine distribution as a cure for coronavirus had drawn sharp criticism from the doctors.

A CCTV footage of the accident, which went viral on social media, shows the car hitting the scooter, pushing the woman on road for a couple of meters before climbing over her.

The car stopped when she was under it. A few people including a policeman lifted the car from the front and rescued the woman.

She was immediately taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru City MLA U T Khader’s car which was passing through that way.

Davangere, Jul 19: A 9-year-old sniffer dog ran 12 km in the night to trace a murder accused and helped the police arrest him in Karnataka's Davangere rural area, an official said on Sunday.

"Doberman Pincher Tunga ran 12 km non-stop from the crime spot at Basavapattana in the city to a house at Kashipur in the rural where murder accused Chethan, 25, was hiding and helped us arrest him on July 17," Davangere Police Superintendent Hanumantha Rai said on phone.

Davangere is 260 km northwest of Bengaluru.

"Though Chethan allegedly shot dead his friend Chandra Nayak with a stolen service revolver on July 10 over sharing the booty (gold ornaments) of the theft they had committed recently with two others. We took female dog Tunga to the crime spot on July 16. She led the sleuths to the area where Chethan was hiding with two accomplices," Rai recalled.

While trained sniffer dogs normally run 4-5 km from a crime spot, Tunga could track the accused 12 km away.

When Tunga's handler (Head Constable Prakash) took her to the crime scene at 9.30 pm, she sniffed around and ran 12 km non-stop to Kashipur. She halted at a wine shop and went to a food joint later. Then she stopped at a house nearby at 12.30 am.

The prime accused (Chethan) was present in the house of his relative. He was arrested after he confessed to the theft and the murder.

The police are on the hunt to trace Chethan's two accomplices who fled from the house they were hiding in.

Karnataka Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Amar Kumar Pandey felicitated Tunga on July 17 at a function here for cracking the murder case with its exceptional sniffing traits.
