Bengaluru, Oct 11: India’s technology hub, Bengaluru, which is home to a large number of multinational research and development centres and startup hubs, will soon be home to yet another mega innovation facility from Israel.

Israel will set up an India-Israeli Innovation Centre (IIIC), the first startup incubation facility in India. This facility by Israel will be only its fourth in the world after the US, the UK and China.

The facility, spread across 10,000 square feet, will be set up in the central business district and will be operated by startup hub MESH (Modiin Entrepreneurs’ Startup Hub).

Interacting with DH, MESH founder and CEO Moshe Porat said the startup incubator in Benglauru is a step towards achieving greater synergy between Indian and Israeli startup companies.

“We have many startup companies in India, especially in Bengaluru, involved in deep technology and they are looking at leveraging by aligning with global startups and incubation centres. We expect by starting MESH in Bengaluru, we can bring synergy in this endeavour,” he said.

Porat added that the India-Israeli Innovation Centre will give access to Israeli investors and frontier tech talent.

He said the incubation centre will be ready by mid-December and two more will be opened soon. “We are aligning our gameplan around government initiatives like Startup India and Digital India. Israel has also identified six cities for starting these kind of incubation centres,” he said.

Each incubation centre will have around Rs 2 crore investment. MESH is a startup hub started in 2014 and is located in Israeli municipality of Modiin.

Varadarajan Krish, who will head the incubation centres in India, said it will bring on board both Israeli and Indian educational institutions for collaboration and co-research.

“Israel’s Technion, Ben-Gurian and Tel Aviv Universities will join hands with IITs and IIIT in India. Also, it will team up with NITI Aayog and Atal Innovation Mission.

Federation of Indo-Israeli Chambers of Commerce vice chairman David Keynan said the innovation centre is one more move to connect the tech industry in both countries. “Porat is a long-time industry veteran in Israel, and his abilities will contribute to the centre’s success,” said Keynan.

New Delhi, Feb 17: The Congress high command is likely to announce the party’s key troubleshooter in Karnataka, DK Shivakumar as the next state unit president with MB Patil as the working president, according to party leaders who spoke on condition of anonymity, in what could be a delicate balancing act between competing caste claims in the state..

Former CM S Siddaramaiah is likely to continue as the Congress Legislature Party leader, the leaders added.

The KPCC presidentship has been vacant ever since the incumbent Dinesh Gundu Rao resigned following the defeat in the bypolls, in which the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) won 12 of the 15 seats, ensuring a majority for itself in the state assembly.

The state leadership issue became contentious following that, with Shivakumar, a Vokkaliga, lobbying to ensure that his role as party’s main go-to man during difficult times be rewarded, the leaders cited above said. Patil, a former home minister and a Lingayat leader, was the favoured choice of Siddaramaiah, they added.

A former minister in the Siddaramiah cabinet told HT on condition of anonymity the appointment was now “just a formality”.

“How long could the current uncertainty continue? Shivakumar is a go-getter who can also help generate funds for the party. For instance, on the Bidar school sedition issue, we were late and started an agitation only after the accused got bail. With Shivakumar at the helm, we will be more aggressive and able to put the BJP government on a mat by highlighting all their omissions and commissions,” the former minister added.

The decision to appoint Shivakumar -- a seven-term MLA who served in the cabinets of former CMs S Bangarappa, SM Krishna, Siddaramiah and HD Kumaraswamy -- is likely to be a controversial one. He faces ongoing income tax and Enforcement Directorate (ED) probes, is currently on bail after being jailed by the ED in a money laundering case. He

In his 2018 poll affidavit, Shivakumar declared assets worth Rs 840 crore, making him one of the richest politicians in the state. His brother DK Suresh is a two term parliamentarian and is the sitting MP from the Bangalore Rural constituency.

Shivakumar’s latest move to build the world’s largest Christ statue in his constituency in Kanakapura has also come in for severe attack from Sangh Parivar outfits, who claim the land he donated was government-owned and illegally usurped by him.

Political analyst Manjunath said that Shivakumar, if appointed, is likely to inject a great degree of dynamism into the functioning of the party.

“He sees himself as a future Chief Minister and is very ambitious. If the appointments are confirmed, it will only vindicate the fact that the party high command has tried to balance caste interests by having a Vokkilga, a Lingayat and a Kuruba – the three leading castes in the state - heading different parts of the party. Also since the BJP is making a concerted effort to break into the Vokkaliga votebank, nominating Shivakumar would be a smart move to consolidate the community behind the party,” he said.

Indore, Jan 24: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kailash Vijayvargiya on Thursday said that he suspected that there were some Bangladeshis among construction labourers who worked at his house recently.

Their “strange” eating habits aroused suspicion about their nationality, the BJP general secretary said at a seminar in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) here.

When a new room was being added at his house recently, he found “eating habits” of some of the workers “strange” as “they were eating only `poha’ (flattened rice)”, he said.

After talking to their supervisor and the building contractor, he suspected that these workers were from Bangladesh, the BJP leader said.

When reporters questioned him later, Vijayvargiya said, “I suspected these workers were residents of Bangladesh. Two days after I became suspicious, they stopped working at my house. I have not filed any police complaint yet. I only mentioned this incident to warn people,” he said.

Speaking at the seminar, Vijayvargiya also claimed that a Bangladeshi terrorist was keeping a watch on him for the last one and a half years.

“Whenever I go out, six armed security personnel follow me. What is happening in this country? Will outside people enter and spread so much terror?” he asked.

“Don’t get confused by rumours. The CAA is in the interest of the country. This law will provide asylum to genuine refugees and identify intruders who are a threat to the country’s internal security,” he added.
