Bengaluru Mayor fined for using plastic, despite a ban

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Bengaluru Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun was at the receiving end for flouting a campaign that she had launched herself!

The Bengaluru civic body fined Mallikarjun for presenting to the Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa, a gift wrapped in plastic. The mayor was slapped with a Rs 500 for using plastic.

This move by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to reinforce its plastic ban that had turned ineffective in the city was immensely appreciated by the social media users.

The mayor got a slip for a fine of Rs500 by BBMP that read "Used plastic for wrapping gift pack".
Certain quality and quantity of plastic had been banned by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike in 2016.

Mallikarjun had visited Yediyurappa to greet him after he took over charge as the Chief Minister of the state.

Bengaluru, May 19: Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has begun booking of tickets from May 18. Ticket counters have been opened after implementation of new guidelines for the fourth phase of COVID-19 nationwide lockdown.

People seeking to travel can book the tickets through KSRTC booking counters, authorised franchises booking counters and online, mobile booking, according to a release.

The advanced booking has started for Bengaluru-Shivamogga, Bengaluru-Mysuru, Bengaluru-Mangaluru routes, among others.

Bookings can be made upto 30 days in advance, as per the release.

Amid COVID-19, Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation has restricted the operation services of the bus between 7 AM to 7 PM, said the release.

Passengers are permitted to travel with social distancing measures while the transport corporation will follow the standard operating procedure issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The MHA had issued updated guidelines after the implementation of the fourth phase of nationwide lockdown on May 17th.

Udupi, Aug 1: A girl child died five persons suffered injuries in a car accident today on National Highway-66 near Ambalpady in Udupi.

According to sources, two couples and children were travelling in the car from Mangaluru to Shikaripura when the tragedy took place. 

The speeding car rammed into the road divider and flipped over after the driver lost control over it near Ambalpady. 

Among the injured, the condition of a woman is said to be critical. She has been admitted to KMC Hospital in Manipal. The other passengers escaped with minor injuries.

A case has been registered at Udupi town traffic police station and investigations are on. More details are awaited.

Mangaluru, Jul 7: The government of Kerala has barred movement of daily pass holders — professionals and workers — between Kasaragod district and Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district following a spurt in COVID-19 cases.

Kerala Revenue Minister E. Chandrasekaran announced the decision at a meeting on Monday in Kasaragod. Both district administrations had in June issued passes to daily travellers in their districts to travel in connection with their work.

Those from Dakshina Kannada intending to work in Kasaragod have to remain in Kasaragod for 28 days if they wish to continue and those from Kasaragod would have to remain in Dakshina Kannada for 28 days if they wish to continue their work, the Minister said.

Thousands from Kasaragod travel daily to Mangaluru and surrounding areas in connection with their work. Their travel past Talapady check post on NH 66 was facilitated by daily e-passes.

Similarly, many from Dakshina Kannada, particularly doctors and healthcare workers, travel daily to Kasaragod with daily e-passes issued by the Kasaragod administration.
