Bengaluru Ponzi scam: SIT officers enter IMA Jewels showroom, find it 90% empty

Bengaluru, Jun 18: Sleuths who entered the Jayanagar showroom of IMA Jewels — one of the entities of IMA Group being probed for its Ponzi operations — found 90% of the ornaments in the display units had disappeared.

The Special Investigation Team suspects the IMG Group founder-owner Mohammed Mansoor Khan may have taken the jewellery with him when he fled the country on June 8. The remaining jewellery is being evaluated and could be worth Rs 20 crore, SIT sources said. The inspection was conducted on Monday.

SIT sleuths have searched the houses of two women, including a former wife of Khan, and seized gold ornaments, Rs 2 lakh in cash and a laptop used by him.

With 1.25 lakh people having lost their money to Ponzi scams in Bengaluru in the past decade, new Bengaluru City police commissioner Alok Kumar said preventing such fraudulent schemes will be one of his priorities.

The Karnataka government said it was considering setting up fast-track courts to try Ponzi cases, and revenue minister RV Deshpande told TOI the government was contemplating a new law in this regard.

Mangaluru, Mar 21: Taking strict measures to contain the spreading of COVID-19, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, who is also District Magistrate, ordered sealing of road connectivity leading to Kerala State for all kinds of traffic from March 21 to midnight of March 31.

No vehicles will be allowed to operate between Dakshina Kannada and Kasaragod district in Kerala, the Deputy Commissioner said in a late-night order on Friday.

Ms. Rupesh said that in case of any emergency, vehicles will be allowed only through the Talapady check post on the National Highway 66, which is about 17 km away from Mangaluru city.

The Deputy Commissioner’s order came after the Kasaragod district reported six COVID-19 positive cases on Friday.

The order said that many vehicles operated between Kasaragod in Kerala and Mangaluru and hence, there is a need to take precautionary measures.

Private buses to not ply

Private bus operators in Dakshina Kannada will not operate their buses on March 22 to support the ‘Janata Curfew’ called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Dilraj Alva, president, Dakshina Kananda Bus Operators’ Association, said in a release on Friday that people should remain in their homes on Sunday to help contain the community spreading of COVID-19. The decision has been taken in the interest of the public, he said.

New Delhi, Apr 19: The government on Sunday prohibited the sale of non-essential items through e-commerce platforms during the ongoing lockdown, four days after allowing such companies to sale mobile phones, refrigerators and ready-made garments.

Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla issued an order excluding the non-essential items from sale by the e-commerce companies from the consolidated revised guidelines, which listed the exemption given to the services and people from the purview of the lockdown.

The order said the following clause -- "E-commerce companies. Vehicles used by e-commerce operators will be allowed to ply with necessary permissions" -- is excluded from the guidelines.

The previous order had said such items were allowed for sale through e-commerce platforms from April 20.

However, the reason for reversing the order is not known immediately.

Mangaluru, July 30: Medical doctor turned IAS officer K V Rajendra assumed charge as the 130th deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district here today.

The 2013 batch Karnataka cadre officer succeeds Sindhu B Rupesh, who was transferred as Director of Electronic Delivery of Citizen Services (EDCS), Bengaluru. The outgoing DC welcomed the new DC in the presence of staff. 

Dr Rajendra said that he expects cooperation from all stakeholders in administering the district, amidst the mounting Covid-19 cases.

Rajendra, an alumnus of JJM Medical College, Davanagere, was serving as the CEO of Belagavi zilla panchayat before being posted as DC of this coastal district. 

Having served as assistant commissioner of Puttur sub-division for nearly a year from December 2015, Dr Rajendra, hails from Thirthahalli in Shivamogga district, had his probationary training in Bidar. He posted as CEO of Ballari ZP where he worked for nearly three till 21, 2019.

He also had a brief stint as assistant secretary in the department of fertiliser with the ministry of chemicals and fertilisers.

Sindhu who was the CEO of Udupi zilla panchayat had succeeded Sasikanth Senthil, who resigned from the Indian Administrative Service on September 6, 2019. She had taken charge on September 7, 2019.
