Kolkata, Feb 26: Handpicked by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee to represent Trinamool Congress in Darjeeling, former Indian football captain, Bhaichung Bhutia quit Bengal’s ruling party, shaking the political scenario in the region.

In a social media post on Monday morning, the former Sikkim footballer announced that he was stepping down from all positions and membership of the party.

“As of today, I have officially resigned from the membership and all the official and political posts of All India Trinamool Congress party. I am no longer a member or associated with any political party in India,” wrote Bhutia on Facebook and Twitter.

Right now, Bhutia has three options in politics in his state — join either BJP or Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), or float a new outfit.

Though he is keeping everybody guessing on his next move, BJP was seen leading the race in trying to woo the wily former striker.

Union minister and BJP leader, Kiren Rijiju tweeted, “Football icon & former Indian captain Baichung Bhutia’s resignation from TMC was expected. He told me he has high regards for Mamata Banerjee but (was) unable to cope with the situation. He desires to do more for football & Sikkim. My best wishes to Bhaichung for his future endeavour.”

The message was accompanied by a photo of him with Bhutia.

Bhutia is currently holidaying in Philippines and Thailand with his family. He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Darjeeling and the 2016 Assembly polls from Siliguri on Trinamool tickets, but lost on both occasions.

D B Chauhan, BJP’s Sikkim state committee president, said, “I am in touch with Bhutia. As we are nationalists, we too want him to be a part of the BJP in Sikkim.”

Sikkim’s main opposition party, SKM’s Bikash Basnet said the party is in touch with Bhutia. “If he wants to join the party, we would all be very happy. It would be a proud moment for us. He is an asset of Sikkim and we will give him due respect.”

SKM won 10 out of 32 assembly seats in the Himalayan state in 2014 polls.

The state’s ruling party Sikkim Democratic Front, SDF, too, wanted him in politics.

“I would just like to welcome Baichung in the political scenario of Sikkim if he wishes to join it. I would just say that fame doesn’t win elections, commitment does. People are the best judges and I’m sure they’ll take a right call,” said Tshering Wangdi Lepcha, Sikkim’s forest minister.

Trinamool leaders, however, did not comment on Bhutia’s exit.

Bhutia’s exit from Trinamool comes just about a month after speculation in Sikkim media that the 43-year-old former striker would enter politics in his home state and challenge the might of five-term chief minister Pawan Chamling. The Assembly polls are due in Sikkim in 2019.

Bhutia is an icon in Sikkim, where a stadium is named after him. Over the past few months, he had expressed his unhappiness in close circles over the way Bengal’s ruling party handled the agitation for Gorkhaland in adjoining Darjeeling hills.

After 12 lives were lost during the agitation June – September last year, Bhaichung had publicly expressed his unhappiness. Trinamool leaders in north Bengal also said that Bhutia was expecting a nomination to Rajya Sabha that did not happen.

Though Bhutia was appointed Trinamool’s working president in Darjeeling district and chairman of North Bengal Board for Development of Games and Sports, he went into political hibernation and was not seen in political programmes since the loss to CPI(M)’s Asok Bhattacharya in 2016.

More and more Indians have become better prepared in the last one month, as far as stocking of their ration, medicine or money is concerned, according to the IANS-CVoter COVID-19 Tracker.

With the second leg of the lockdown half way through and Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying it's a long haul, 57.2% respondents said they have less than three weeks of stock while 43.3% said they have a stock that will last beyond that

However, if one breaks into weeks, most respondents said they are prepared for a week's time. 24.5% respondents said they have ration, medicine or money to last a week. This is closely followed by 21.9 % respondents saying they are ready for a month.

Meanwhile, 20.4 % said they are ready for a couple of weeks. There are 15.8 % who said they are ready for more than a month with food, ration and medicine. A tiny 5.6 % said they are ready with three weeks of stock.

However, there is 12.3% who still seem to live on the edge with less than a week's preparation.

But, the biggest takeaway from the IANS-CVoter COVID-19 Tracker is that in the last one month, a massive segment of society realised that the fight is long and the preparation should also be to last that long.

o put things into context, on March 16 when the tracker started, a whopping 77.1% said they have stock to last for less than a week. More than a month later on April 21, that number jumped to just 12.3%, which essentially means, people have become better prepared for a long-hauled lockdown period.

Similarly, on April 21, a sizable 21.9% respondents claimed they are ready with ration and medicine that will last them a month. On March 16, not even one respondent could claim they have a month's stock. In fact till March 22, just ahead of the announcement of the first lockdown, no respondent the IANS-CVoter tracker said that they have a month's preparation.

Similarly, when the tracker started, 9.9% said they simply ‘don't know'. As on April 21, that number is a big zero.

Mar 4: Twenty-one Italian tourists and three Indian tour operators have been sent to an ITBP quarantine facility in Delhi on Tuesday for suspected coronavirus exposure, official sources said.

Health Ministry sources said these foreigners, 13 women and eight men, were in the same group of which an Italian and his wife have tested positive in Rajasthan capital Jaipur.

“His (Italian in Jaipur) condition is stable,” a source said.

Three Indians, who were accompanying this Italian group as tour operators, have also been sent to the ITBP facility in Chhawla area of south-west Delhi, they said.

All these people, staying at a five-star hotel in south Delhi, have been put in “preventive isolation” at the ITBP camp and their samples will be taken on Wednesday, sources said.

The centre already has 112 people, 76 Indians and 36 foreigners, since February 27 after they were evacuated by an IAF plane from Wuhan in China, the epicentre of the coronavirus.

The first samples of these 112 people had tested negative when reports came in last week.

New Delhi, Jan 20: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday said the kind of cleaning in the system that the BJP-led government had to carry out after coming to power in 2014 was "unbelievable" and it undertook the exercise without any grudge or worry.

Between 2014-16, there were a lot of questions as to why reforms did not come fast and there were comments that the government was incapable of bringing them, she said delivering the Nani Palkhivala Memorial lecture on "Road Map to $5 Trillion Economy" here.

Pointing out that there were allegations and criticism that the government wants to do something but it did not, Sitharaman said, "I am fully willing to buy that." She recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi often said he did not believe in incremental changes and the country needed good transformational change. The stage in which India is today, it cannot have little marginal increments, but good transformational change.

"But still one might say in the last five years the government never did. That can be a critical analysis and I am fully willing to buy that. Because post-2014 the kind of cleaning up the government had to do was unbelievable and we undertook that exercise without a grudge without a worry.. we had to do it and it is part of the game," she said. Elaborating, Sitharaman said states have their own views on Land Acquisition Bill and the government could not have done anything because land, after all, is with them.

Commenting on the topic 'Road Map to $5 trillion economy,' she said quoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's comments, the government would take the route "Sarkar ka abhaav nahi hona chahiye, prabhaav hona chahiye aur dabaav nahi hona chahiye."

"Abhaav and dabaav both of which are not desirable, abhaav is the inadequacy or lack of adequate presence or shortfall. You do not need a shortfall. You need a government where it should be present, where it is expected to function.", she said.

"So there should not be abhaav. Dabaav (meaning pressure) is not something you want from the government. So, you want Prabhaav. It is broadly an influence, facilitation, broadly the philosophy with which it is mandated, she said.

Noting that the government has got the mandate through the election, she said, "The mandate was spelt out in so many different ways in its manifesto. So the route towards $5 trillion is this."

"We have to be there to facilitate. We have to be there to make it easy. We have to be where you need us, where there is no policy (reforms from the government)," she said.

On the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) implemented by the government, the union minister said the approach of the IBC was not to shut business. "IBC takes on the approach in having some kind of resolution where all people who exploited the company do not come back through the "back door," she said.

IBC was done through better management so that the institution is alive and kicking. It is something which she wanted to carry forward from Modi 1.0 to 2.0. "The point I am trying to make on this road to $5 trillion economy is that it is not just an abstraction, this is not how I want India to be. But in micro-level too, we are coming in response to every stakeholder," she said.
