Udupi, Aug 11: Rajeshwari Shetty, prime accused in the murder of her husband and NRI husband Bhaskar Shetty, on Thursday withdrew her plea seeking bail after the Supreme Court indicated to her counsel that it cannot consider her appeal at present as the police wanted to carry out additional investigation in the case.

When Rajeshwari's petition seeking release on bail came up for hearing before a Bench of Justice S A Bobde and Justice L. Nageswara Rao, counsel for the State said that additional investigation will be carried out in the case.

When the Bench indicated that it cannot consider the plea for bail at this stage, her counsel sought court’s permission to withdraw the petition with the liberty to renew the prayer for bail after six months or after additional investigation is over, whichever is earlier.

Following this submission, the court treated the petition as “dismissed as withdrawn” while granting liberty to her to approach the court again as sought for.

Bhaskar Shetty, who owned big businesses in Saudi Arabia and Udupi, went missing from his house here on July 28, 2016. The charge sheet has alleged that Rajeshwari Shetty had killed her husband.

Kozhikode, Jun 14: A mosque in Kuttichira of Kozhikode has found a unique way to avoid crowding amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The committee that runs the mosque has started issuing smart cards to people for offering prayers and simultaneously encouraging social distancing.

"The committee has given smart cards with numbers to the people in the surroundings of the Masjid. One who enters the mosque premises has to rub their hands with sanitizers. They also have to tell their identity on camera. The automatic system has been put in place to save the address and phone number. Next time onwards they have to say their smart card number only so that other details will be automatically filled," said Muhammad Sajjad, who is part of the Mosque committee.

"The door of the mosque will open automatically after swiping the card. We have fit in a sensor on the doors. We have also made marks inside the mosque area so that people can abide by social distancing norm," he added.

A couple of days back the Kerala government has rolled out an order allowing the opening of places of worship, malls and restaurants from June 9 in strict accordance with guidelines and social distancing norms. As per the guidelines, pregnant women and those with co-morbidities should not visit any places of worship. Those with symptoms should not be allowed.

Bengaluru, Jun 23: Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Tuesday demanded that Bengaluru should be put under lockdown for 20 days to contain the spread of coronavirus, the cases of which have risen sharply recently.

“Stop playing with people's lives. There’s no use in sealing off only some areas. If the people of Bengaluru must live, then a lockdown of at least 20 days is needed. Otherwise, Bengaluru will become another Brazil,” Kumaraswamy said in a tweet. “People’s health is more important, not economy.”

The JD(S) leader was reacting to the BJP government's decision to impose an area-wide lockdown in Chickpet, KR Market, Kalasipalyam and Chamarajpet while streets will be sealed off in VV Puram, Siddapura, Yelahanka, Vidyaranyapura and Chickpet.

Bengaluru has witnessed a huge spike in its Covid-19 tally; the city currently has at least 919 active cases. This has sparked off fears that the contagion might have reached the community.

Kumaraswamy has also demanded welfare measures for the poor. “The poor and the labourers should be given ration immediately. The state’s 50 lakh working class should get ₹5,000 each. The aid already announced by the government hasn’t reached drivers, weavers, Madiwalas and other communities,” he said, adding that mere announcements of a package won’t be enough and “it has to be implemented.”
