Bihar Assembly polls: Ram Vilas Paswan rules out alliance between JD(U), RJD

June 1, 2015

Patna, Jun 1: Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said on Sunday there would be neither merger of Janata Parivar nor alliance between JD(U) and RJD for the upcoming Assembly elections in Bihar.

Bihar Assembly polls"Forget the much touted merger of Janata Parivar parties, which has failed. There won't even be any alliance between JD (U) and RJD for the coming Bihar Assembly elections. One thing is for sure that there will be a severe 'latthabazi' (stick fight) between the two parties by the time the polls approach," the Union Food and Public Distribution Minister told PTI.

The Union Minister was here while on his way to inspect development works at Akbarpur Malahi village adopted by him in his Hajipur Lok Sabha constituency.

Attacking Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD chief Lalu Prasad, he said that they should reveal who was responsible for the failure of merger efforts of Janata Parivar, and why they were not sharing the dais at political programmes.

Paswan was hinting at the 'Nishad Maharally' organised in the state capital yesterday. Kumar had not attended it citing eye surgery though Prasad and JD (U) national President Sharad Yadav were present there.

The LJP leader also took potshots at Kumar for not staying at the CM's official residence at 1, Anney Marg and said it was out of the "fear of getting defeated" in the forthcoming state Assembly polls.

"Kumar is not staying at the CM House in Patna due to the fear of getting defeated in the Bihar elections. He is afraid that he will have to vacate it if he loses in the polls. So he is still residing at 7, Circular Road residence allotted to him as a former Chief Minister," he said.

Asked about former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi's overtures and BJP President Amit Shah's indication that there was some scope of alliance with him, Paswan said the issue had been left to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for decision and LJP would abide it.

Daman, Mar 3: A BJP councillor was shot dead on Monday in the Union Territory of Daman, police said.

Salim Memon was sitting in his motorcycle showroom when three to four unidentified persons shot four to five bullets after asking a visitor there to move out, an official said quoting eye-witnesses.

While fleeing, they also shot two rounds close to this visitor who was standing outside, he said.

"Memon was rushed to a hospital in Marwad area but was declared dead on arrival. CCTV footage is being scanned to nab the culprits," said Daman Superintendent of Police Vikramjit Singh.

Memon was elected to Daman municipality as a Congress candidate but then switched over to the BJP.

Sources said Memon, who also has a land brokerage business, had come out of jail a few months back in connection with a case of rivalry.

New Delhi, Feb 13: Arvind Kejriwal wrote to Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Wednesday, staking claim to form the government in the national capital, sources said, while hinting that the AAP might not invite senior leaders and chief ministers of other parties for the oath-taking ceremony.

The sources said it was the formal process by the AAP chief, who was elected as the legislature party leader earlier in the day, to stake claim for forming the new government.

Kejriwal, who returned to power in Delhi with a stunning poll victory on Tuesday, will take oath as chief minister for the third consecutive time on February 16.

While the oath-taking ceremony will be open to the public, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was considering not inviting leaders and chief ministers of other parties as it did not wish to be seen as a "confrontationist" against the BJP-led Centre, the sources said.

They, however, added that the party was yet to take a decision on it.

The AAP has planned mobilisation of people for the mega event and all the newly-elected MLAs of the party have been asked to ensure huge participation from their constituencies.

"I request the people of Delhi to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the chief minister at the Ramlila Maidan in large numbers," senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia told reporters, adding that the ceremony will start at 10 am.

The AAP won 62 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged the remaining eight seats. The Congress drew a blank for the second consecutive time in the Delhi polls.

New Delhi, Mar 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday described British premier Boris Johnson as a "fighter" and hoped he recovers from coronavirus infection.

"Dear PM @BorisJohnson, you're a fighter and you will overcome this challenge as well," Modi tweeted.

He said he prays for his good health and extends best wishes in ensuring a healthy UK.

Johnson said on Friday that he has tested positive for coronavirus after experiencing mild symptoms and is now self-isolating at 10 Downing Street in line with the medical advice.

"I am now self-isolating, but I will continue to lead the government's response via video-conference as we fight this virus," he said.
