In fast paced development, Bihar Assembly Speaker Uday Narayan Chaudhary today recognised Nitish Kumar as the new leader of JD(U) Legislature Party and Jitan Ram Manjhi as a former head.
A letter issued by secretary in-charge of Bihar Assembly Hareram Mukhiya said Chaudhary has recognised Kumar as new leader of JD(U) LP of the House, highly placed sources in Assembly secretariat said.
A letter to this effect has been sent to the Raj Bhawan, the Chief Minister's office and the Nitish Kumar's office, the sources said.
An official of Nitish Kumar's office confirmed receiving a letter from the Assembly secretary to this effect.
The Speaker's recognition of Kumar came in response to a letter from Bihar JD(U) president Basistha Narayan Singh who had apprised him about Kumar's election as leader of the House by 97 out of a total of 111 JD(U) MLAs and 37 out of 41 MLCs.
The sources said after the recognition of Kumar as new leader of JD(U) in the Assembly, Manjhi has become a former leader of JD(U)LP.
RJD which has 24 MLAs, Congress 5, CPI 1 and an Independent have submitted letters of support in favour of Kumar to Raj Bhawan.
Kumar will meet Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi tomorrow to formally stake his claim to form the government.

New Delhi, Jun 23: The Delhi High Court Tuesday granted bail to Jamia student Safoora Zargar, who is pregnant and was arrested under anti-terror law UAPA in a case related to communal violence in northeast Delhi during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, as Solicitor General Tushar Mehta did not oppose it on humanitarian grounds.
At the outset of the hearing, Mehta, representing Delhi Police, submitted that Zargar can be released on regular bail on humanitarian grounds and the decision has not been taken on merits of the case and should not be made a precedent.
Justice Rajiv Shakdher, who conducted the hearing through video conferencing, released Zargar, who is 23-week pregnant, on bail on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and surety of like amount.
The court said she shall not indulge in any activity for which she has been charged with and shall not hamper the investigation or influence the witnesses.

Chennai, Jul 30: Tamil Nadu government on Thursday extended the Covid-19 lockdown till August 31, giving only a few relaxations like allowing delivery of non-essential goods by e-commerce sites. The ban on public transport has been extended till August 31, while availing of e-pass for inter-district and inter-state travel will continue to be in force.
In a detailed statement, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced a “complete lockdown” during which only essential services would continue to be in force on all Sundays during the month of August across the state.
In Chennai, restaurants will be allowed to open dine-in facilities at 50 percent of its total capacity from 6 am to 7 pm from August 1, while vegetable shops, grocery outlets and standalone commercial establishments will also be allowed to remain open from 6 am to 7 pm.
E-commerce sites have been allowed to begin delivery of non-essential goods from August 1, while the ban on public transport, temples in urban areas and towns, cinema halls, shopping malls, and gyms would continue till August 31.
It also said companies or factories in Chennai that have been allowed to function with 50 percent of staff can increase their strength to 75 percent from August 1.

The government also asked companies to encourage its employees to work from home and advised commercial establishments to follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) as advised by it. Inter-state or inter-district travel will be allowed only with e-pass, while ban on metro and suburban trains continues.
The decision to extend the lockdown till August 31 comes as Tamil Nadu continues to grapple with an increasing number of coronavirus cases. The prevalence of the virus is no more limited to one city or region of the state with almost all districts reporting fresh cases, some of them over 200 new patients, every day.
On Thursday morning, Tamil Nadu’s Covid-19 tally was 2,34,114 including 1,72,883 discharges and 3,741 deaths. The active cases stood at 57,490.

Hopes dashed but will fight till convicts are hanged: Nirbhaya's mother

New Delhi, Jan 31: Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi on Friday said she will continue her fight till the convicts in the 2012 gangrape and murder case are hanged, shortly after a Delhi court postponed the execution of death warrants till further order.
Devi told reporters her "hopes are dashed" but she will continue her fight.
"These convicts have no right to live. We keep getting disappointed by the system. I will continue my fight till the convicts are hanged," she said.
A Delhi court postponed the execution of death warrants of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case till further order.
Additional sessions judge Dharmender Rana passed the order on a plea by the convicts seeking a stay on their execution on Saturday, February 1.
Devi said because of the loopholes in law the "criminals' lawyers had the audacity to challenge me in court that they will not be hanged".
The black warrants for execution of the death sentence against Pawan Gupta, Vinay Kumar Sharma, Akshay Kumar and Mukesh Kumar Singh, were issued on January 17.
A 23-year-old physiotherapy intern who came to be known as "Nirbhaya" (the fearless one) was gangraped and savagely assaulted on the night of December 16, 2012, in a moving bus in South Delhi. She died of her injuries a fortnight later in a Singapore hospital.
