Bihar polls: Asaduddin Owaisi denies 'secret deal' with BJP

September 20, 2015

Hyderabad, Sep 20: AIMIM, which will test electoral waters in Bihar this time, has attacked the grand alliance of RJD-JDU-Congress saying the track record of these parties speak very little and dismissed allegations of being propped by the BJP.

OwaisiAll India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen is serious about winning Assembly seats in Seemanchal region, and it is not about checking the popularity of Hyderabad-based party in the poll-bound state, its President Asaduddin Owaisi said.

On his party's decision to contest polls in Bihar ruffling lot of feathers in the so-called secular camp, the Hyderabad Lok Sabha member said, "They have not done justice or development and their track record clearly shows that the real prosperity or justice has not been done. "We have decided to limit ourselves only to Seemanchal area and that too we are yet to take a decision on how many seats of 24 (in the region) we are going to contest. In constituencies where the AIMIM is not contesting, the party has requested the people of Bihar defeat BJP and to vote for any secular candidate or secular combination," he said.

"Despite that, they are fully drunk in arrogance and they don't want MIM to participate," Owaisi told PTI as he attacked the grand alliance of JDU, RJD and Congress. "If you see Seemanchal area, out of 24 (seats), BJP had won 13 in 2010. Am I responsible for that? And what is the number of Muslim representation? So, they are being badly exposed."

AIMIM's stand, he said, is very clear that it wants to contest on the plank of development and justice for Seemanchal region and "wherever we are not there (not contesting) in Seemanchal (that comprises four districts) or anywhere in Bihar, we request the people of Bihar to vote for secular candidate or secular combination." As for whether AIMIM is just testing waters in Muslim- dominated constituencies of Seemanchal or if it is serious about winning in the region, he said, "Of course, we are serious. We want to win the Assembly seats where we are contesting and we have to work hard and will definitely work hard to win the confidence of the people."

On charges by some sections of the grand alliance that AIMIM is being propped by the BJP to split secular votes, Owaisi said there were also (similar) allegations which were made against Kanshi Ram when he floated the BSP. "... Now they are incompetent and they are discredited. And that is why all these allegations are being made against me," he said and sarcastically added, "I don't mind it. They are honouring me by making all these allegations." Without naming the Congress, he said that party doesn't want to do introspection after (reverses in) Assembly elections in Delhi, Jharkhand, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi University, where his party had not even put up candidates, because of their arrogance.

"They want to point a finger at me. Fine. I have no issue." On growth strategy for the party and whether it has pan- India ambition, Owaisi said, "No, no. I don't have pan-India ambition. We will definitely contest in Uttar Pradesh (where Assembly elections are due next year) because in that state we have been working in the last two years and we are on a stronger ground over there. Organisationally also we will definitely contest in Uttar Pradesh."

He claimed that the Narendra Modi government has massively failed on the governance and economy fronts. "Reason for the victory of Modi was that he will provide governance, he will revive economy. But the government has failed massively and disappointed the people of India on these two fronts," Owaisi said.

"They are creating conflicts. Their whole discourse is not on development but on conflict whether it is beef ban or meat ban," he alleged. "Now, the culture minister has even questioned the nationalism of Muslims who are proud Indians," he said, referring to Mahesh Sharma's controversial statement that late President A P J Abdul Kalam was a great nationalist despite being a Muslim.

New Delhi, Feb 6: DMK Lok Sabha member M K Kanimozhi on Wednesday challenged popular actor Rajinikanth to raise his voice for Muslims, saying they have "already been affected" by the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and are protesting on streets against the law.

Reacting to his statements earlier in the day in Chennai that "CAA is no threat to Muslims" and "if they face trouble I will be the first person to raise voice for them," Kanimozhi, daughter of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, told news agency that "Muslims in India have already been affected due to CAA".

"Let him (Rajinikanth) come forward and raise his voice for the affected Muslims", she said.

She said the members of the community have been protesting as the law leaves out Muslims.,

Asked whether Rajinikanth, through this pro-CAA statement, was moving closer to the BJP, the MP from Tuticorin said, "What he has said is no different from the BJP's narrative which we have been listening in parliament for the last few days".

Under CAA, members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who came to India from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014, to escape religious persecution there will not be treated as illegal immigrants, and be given Indian citizenship.

Rajinikanth had asserted that the legislation did not pose any threat to Muslims. He wondered as to how Muslims, who chose to stay back in India following Partition will be sent out of the country. Besides, the central government had assured that Indian people will have no issues in view of CAA, he noted.

He charged that some political parties were instigating people against the CAA for their selfish interests.

Ahmedabad, Jul 5: A woman police sub-inspector (PSI) with Ahmedabad Police was arrested and sent to three-day police remand, on Saturday, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 20 lakh from an Ahmedabad-based businessman — accused in two rape cases — in exchange for not applying a stringent act against him.

According to police officials, Shweta Jadeja, PSI and incharge of Mahila police station (West) in the city, was arrested by a team of Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) officials in Ahmedabad on Friday after the complainant in the case, the rape accused, approached the Crime Branch and stated that Jadeja had allegedly demanded Rs 35 lakh form him, in exchange for not booking him under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities (PASA) Act.

The PASA Act in Gujarat gives power to the police to detain an accused and send them to a prison away from their native district. The complainant claimed that he already paid Rs 20 lakh of the total amount to Jadeja on February 3.

On Saturday, a sessions court awarded Jadeja a three-day remand with the Crime Branch, which will end at 11:30 am on July 7. Following this, the PSI will undergo a medical check-up and be presented before the magistrate again.

“We had originally demanded a seven-day remand. The accused officer has been sent to three-day remand for further investigation in the case,” said a senior police official in Ahmedabad.

According to police, complainant Kenal Shah — managing director of GSP Crop Science Private Limited, a crop solution-based company in Ahmedabad — is allegedly facing two separate rape cases under IPC section 376.

PSI Jadeja was first entrusted with the investigation of a rape case against Shah in January this year, lodged at Mahila police station (West).

The rape case complaint is of 2019. Another rape case against Shah was being probed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crimes Against Women), Mini Josef, wherein the investigation was reportedly completed.

As per the remand application report filed by the police, Jadeja had allegedly threatened Shah through his brother Bhavesh Shah — a joint managing director at GSP Crop Science Private Limited — and initially demanded Rs 25 lakh for not applying the PASA Act against the accused. The bribe amount was then settled at Rs 20 lakh and in February, the accused allegedly paid the amount via an office accountant to one Jayubha, allegedly a representative of Jadeja, from a finance office in Jamjodhpur area of Ahmedabad.

The report further stated that after the initial amount was paid, a third complaint was allegedly made against Kenal by a security officer at his office, Yograjsinh, for criminal intimidation. After the third complaint, PSI Jadeja had contacted Bhavesh again and demanded an additional sum of Rs 15 lakh for not applying the PASA Act against Kenal. The complaint from the security officer was not converted into an FIR and Shah has not been jailed yet.

However, It was after the demand of Rs 15 lakh that complainant Kenal approached the Crime Branch on June 27. An FIR was lodged against Jadeja at Ahmedabad DCB police station under sections seven and twelve of the Prevention of Corruption Act, charging her for “public servant taking gratification other than legal remuneration in respect of an official act”.

“Now that we have received the remand of the accused officer from the court, we will try to trace and recover the alleged Rs 20 lakh amount she received in this case,” said Deepan Bhadran, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad.

Shweta Jadeja is a PSI of the 2016-’17 batch and a resident of Vastrapur in Ahmedabad, while her native place is in Keshod of Junagadh district. The police have not recovered the bribe amount she allegedly accepted as of late Saturday.
