BJP, AAP hit out at Robert Vadra, Sonia meets him

November 3, 2014

New Delhi, Nov 3: The BJP and the AAP Sunday lashed out at Congress president Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra, a day after Vadra snapped at a TV crew on being questioned over his controversial land deals in Haryana.

Robert VadraThe Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) denounced Vadra and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused the Gandhi family of "arrogance".

Sonia Gandhi Sunday visited her daughter Priyanka and son-in-law's residence, as the Congress came to the defence of Vadra, who the party otherwise said was a private citizen.

Congress sources said Gandhi spent nearly half an hour at the Lodhi Estate residence, but what they may have discussed was not known.

On Saturday, a visibly angry Vadra snapped at a TV crew when asked about his controversial land deals in Haryana.

Vadra thrice asked the reporter "Are you serious?" and once "Are you nuts?" before pushing away the journalist's microphone and calling him an "idiot". He then walked away, followed by his guards.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said action will be taken if a complaint is registered with the ministry.

"We will take action if a complaint is filed. The media should be allowed to do its work," Javadekar said.

BJP spokesman Sambit Patra said: "It was the sheer frustration of Robert Vadra that became manifested as inappropriate behaviour against a journalist.

"Vadra was the one who had called India a 'Banana Republic' and we Indians as 'mango people'. It is time we make him realise that India is no more a Banana Republic which was ruled by the first family of the Congress."

Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala chided the journalist for not giving "personal space and liberty" to a person "neither in public nor (holding) any public office".

"Unpleasantness of repeatedly asking questions at private functions, like what happened with Robert Vadra, must be avoided at all times," he said.

Surjewala said that on numerous occasions, "fringe elements affiliated to the BJP-RSS-Shiv Sena have attacked news media offices in Delhi and Mumbai without any reason or provocation".

Another BJP leader, Shahnawaz Hussain, said Vadra was not a private person.

"He considers himself to be a very special person. According to (Congress leader) Digvijaya Singh, he is a private person. But his behaviour does not show that he is a private person," Hussain said.

AAP leader Yogendra Yadav said Vadra's snapping at the journalist showed the Gandhi family's "arrogance was intact" and "they needed to be taught more lessons".

The new BJP government in Haryana has announced that Vadra's land deals will be probed.

New Delhi, Jun 7: The Islamic Centre of India on Saturday issued an advisory for those visiting mosques in view of the Centre’s decision to allow reopening of religious places from June 8.

Islamic Centre of India chairman Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali advised people above 65 years and under 10 years of age not to visit mosques and instead offer prayers at home.

He also advised against crowding in mosques, stressing that not more than five people should be present at a time and social distancing be maintained, with the ‘namazis’ using masks and keeping a distance of six feet among themselves while offering prayers.

He added that the situation would be reviewed after 15 days and if required, another advisory would be issued.

New Delhi, Feb 3: Union minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday said Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had called himself an "anarchist" and there is not much of a "difference between an anarchist and a terrorist".

His remarks come a few days after the Election Commission issued a show cause notice to BJP MP Parvesh Verma for allegedly calling Kejriwal a "terrorist".

Addressing a press conference here, Javadekar raked up the issue of Kejriwal "staying a night at the Moga residence of Khalistan Commando Force chief Gurinder Singh during the Punjab Assembly polls".

"You knew it was a militant's house. Still, you stayed there. How much more evidence do you need?" he said.

"Kejriwal is now asking with a sad face, 'am I a terrorist?' You are a terrorist and there is a lot of evidence to prove that. You yourself had said you are an anarchist. There is not much of a difference between an anarchist and a terrorist," the senior BJP leader said.

Flanked by Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari and Union minister Anurag Thakur, Javadekar said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was supporting Shaheen Bagh, where slogans of "Assam ko azadi", "Jinnah wali azadi" were being raised. "Supporting such slogans is also terrorism".

He alleged that Kejriwal stood with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where "anti-India slogans were raised, and did not grant sanction to prosecute (those who raised the slogans)".

"On January 26, you threatened that you would stop their prosecution. How much more proof do you need? The people of Delhi now know that you are the chief of liars, you are an anarchist and sympathise with terrorists.

"You are supporting Shaheen Bagh, JNU, the slogans being raised there and all such anarchists...then you are definitely a terrorist. This is your identity, no matter how innocent face you make," he said.

On Thursday, the Election Commission had issued a show cause notice to Verma, the BJP MP from West Delhi, for allegedly calling Kejriwal a "terrorist".

He was earlier barred from campaigning for 96 hours (four days) for making controversial remarks at a poll meet recently.

An emotional Kejriwal had later said it was for the people of Delhi to decide whether they consider him their son, brother, or a terrorist.

"How have I become a terrorist? I've arranged for medicines...did so much for the needy. I've never thought of myself or my family... am ready to give my life for the nation," he had said at a press conference.
