A controversy erupted on Friday after a video purportedly showing Congress president Rahul Gandhi “disrespecting” national song ‘Vande Mataram’ at a public rally here surfaced and went viral.

The BJP slammed Rahul, saying he does not have respect for the national song, a charge dismissed by the Congress as “absolutely false.”

“He (Rahul) does not have respect for national song. What can we expect from him,” tweeted BJP on its handle, after a local TV channel showed a brief video clip of the purported incident even as the Congress dubbed it as a “fake video”.

The video showed Rahul sitting on the dias with senior Congress leaders, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and looking at his watch gesturing something to AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka K C Venugopal, apparently to wrap up quickly.

A person is then heard telling the singer to “just sing a line (of Vande Matram) and finish it off.” As the singer began singing “Vande Mataram”, Venugopal is seen nudging Rahul to stand up. Seizing on this, the BJP tweeted, “Today, RG asked to cut it to just one line, reminding us of INC’s total disregard for the song.”

The BJP further asked, “Do we need more reasons for Cong Mukth Bharath? Shame on you, RG.”

Criticising Rahul’s act, the BJP said that in 1937 Jawharlal  Nehru had dropped last three stanzas of Vande Mataram just to pacify Mohammad Ali Jinnah who had said the song irks the Muslims.

Senior BJP leader and Union Minister Ananth Kumar also took to twitter saying, “Common proud Indians like us say - Janani Janmm Bhumischa Swarga Daapi Gariyasi. Arrogant, Ignorant dynast says “cut short Vande Mataram.”

Former Union minister and Congress leader Rajeev Shukla dismissed it as “absolutely false” allegation and called it a “fake video”. “It is the work of theirs to release fake video. Who else believes in Vande Mataram than Congress. The Vande Mataram was started to be sung from 1896 Congress session,” he told reporters in Bengaluru.

The Congress always complied with Vande Mataram. “Each of our session starts with Vande Mataram and ends with the national anthem. They teach us Vande Mataram. It is neither sung in their office, nor in the RSS headquarters,” he said, hitting out at BJP.

New Delhi, Jan 31: The Supreme Court Friday dismissed the plea filed by one of the four death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case, Pawan Gupta, seeking review of its order rejecting his juvenility claim.

The review plea filed earlier in the day was taken up for consideration in-chamber by a bench comprising Justices R Banumathi, Ashok Bhushan and A S Bopanna.

On January 20, the apex court had rejected the plea by Pawan who had challenged the Delhi High Court's order dismissing his juvenility claim.

Advocate A P Singh, who is representing Pawan in the case, said he filed a petition on his behalf seeking review of the top court's January 20 order on Friday.

While dismissing the plea, the top court had said there was no ground to interfere with the high court order that rejected Pawan's plea and his claim was rightly rejected by the trial court as also the high court.

It had said the matter was raised earlier in the review petition before the apex court which rejected plea of juvenility taken by Pawan and another co-accused Vinay Kumar Sharma and that order has attained finality.

Singh had argued that as per his school leaving certificate, he was a minor at the time of the offence and none of the courts, including trial court and high court, ever considered his documents.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Delhi Police, had said Pawan's claim of juvenility was considered at each and every judicial forum and it will be a travesty of justice if the convict is allowed to raise the claim of juvenility repeatedly and at this point of time.

The trial court on January 17 issued black warrants for the second time for the execution of all the four convicts in the case -- Mukesh Kumar Singh (32), Pawan (25), Vinay (26) and Akshay (31) -- in Tihar jail at 6 am on February 1. Earlier, on January 7, the court had fixed January 22 as the hanging date.

As of now, only Mukesh has exhausted all his legal remedies including the clemency plea which was dismissed by President Ram Nath Kovind on January 17 and the appeal against the rejection was thrown out by the Supreme Court on January 29.

Convict Akshay's curative petition was dismissed by the top court on January 30. Another death row convict Vinay moved mercy plea before President on January 29, which is pending.

Singh has also approached the trial court seeking stay on the execution scheduled on February 1, saying the legal remedies of some of the convicts are yet to be availed.

A 23-year-old paramedic student, referred to as Nirbhaya, was gang-raped and brutally assaulted on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012, in a moving bus in south Delhi by six people before she was thrown out on the road.

New Delhi, Jun 16: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday demanded a rollback of hike in fuel prices, saying the government's decision to increase the prices of petrol and diesel during the coronavirus crisis is "wholly insensitive" and "ill-advised".

The government is doing nothing short of "profiteering off its people" when they are down and out, she said in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Petrol and diesel prices were hiked for the 10th day in a row on Tuesday.

"I am deeply distressed that in these exceedingly difficult times since the beginning of March, the government has taken the wholly insensitive decision to increase petrol and diesel prices on no less than ten separate occasions," Gandhi said in her letter.

She accused the government of earning an additional revenue of nearly Rs 2.6 lakh crore through these "ill-advised" hikes in excise duty and increase in prices of petrol and diesel.

"I urge you to roll back these increases and pass on the benefit of low oil prices directly to the citizens of this country.

"If you wish for them to be 'self-reliant' then do not place financial fetters on their ability to move forward," the Congress president said.

Gandhi also urged the government to use its resources to put money directly into the hands of those in need in these times of severe hardship.
