Bengaluru, Jan 9: BJP national president Amit Shah and Congress president Rahul Gandhi will virtually take over election management of their respective parties in Karnataka as the arch rivals brace for a tough fight ahead of the crucial Assembly polls.

Post Sankranti, both Shah and Rahul are expected to deploy key resources to devise a poll strategy in the state. The 2018 Assembly election is a high-stakes battle for both parties. For the Congress, Karnataka is one of the last major states where it is in power whereas the BJP hopes to extend its winning streak from Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh to Karnataka.

Rahul has convened a meeting of the state party leaders on January 13 in Delhi, following which teams representing key cells - communications, social media and research - will camp in Karnataka. AICC communications wing convenor Priyanka Chaturvedi and AICC research wing chief Rajeev Gowda have already arrived in Bengaluru. AICC social media head Ramya, too will jump into the action soon. All India Professionals Congress chief Shashi Tharoor will also work in the state ahead of the polls. Rahul's own poll strategy team is expected to arrive in Bengaluru closer to the polls, sources said.

In the case of BJP, from February-March till the completion of the polls, a 40-member team of Amit Shah and his trusted lieutenants will descend on Bengaluru to finalise the party's strategy. Starting next month, Shah himself will tour the state extensively to gain command over details, a top BJP functionary said.

Shah is an expansionist unlike his predecessors, party insiders said. His core team comprises key strategists such as Bhupendra Yadav, a Rajya Sabha member known for his acumen to implement election strategy who prefers to work from the party's war room. Yadav is likely to be made in-charge of "page pramukh" initiative of the BJP.

The team also has Arun Singh, BJP national general secretary known for his organisational skills; Om Mathur, who enjoys Prime Minister Narendra Modi's confidence, is said to have prepared the groundwork for a 25-0 clean sweep in the Lok Sabha elections in his home state Rajasthan; BJP national general secretary (organisation) Ramlal is the link between the party and the RSS. He is likely to monitor all organisational affairs and ensure coordination with various Sangh affiliates. They will be assisted by a battery of dedicated party functionaries, sources said.

Congress MP Rajeev Gowda said his research department will work closely with the party's communications and social media teams. "We are the munitions factory," he said. "We will take up studies on what our government here has done. In other states, we were in the opposition and our research focus was different. Here, we are in power, so our work will be different," Gowda said.

Bantwal, Feb 2: A 45-year-old man was found murdered in a parked Innova car at Shantinagar near Nagri in Sajipa Munnur in Bantwal taluk today.

The deceased has been identified as Tasleem, a native of Kerala who was wanted in a few criminal cases. He was, according to reports, a member of Kerala's notorious Ziya.

Tasleem was an accused in Kalia Rafiq murder in Ullal (2017). He was arrested last year in connection with a jewellery store robbery case registered in Mangaluru North police station and was sent to Kalaburagi prison. He was later released on bail.

Police are of the suspicion that a rival gang might have kidnapped him, tried to strangle him and then stabbed him in the stomach, before fleeing the spot.

The car had been parked at the spot since morning. The locals who grew suspicious at this informed the police. Circle inspector T D Nagaraj and other officers conducted spot investigation.

Bengaluru, Jan 21: A private hospital in Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, on Tuesday claimed that it has successfully performed a live liver transplant on a Jehovah's Witness from Nigeria, by not using blood or blood products, in order to protect the patient's religious beliefs.

It is said that Jehovah's Witnesses are followers of a Christian faith that prohibits the use of blood or blood products during their treatment. Gehojadak (37), a Jehovah's Witness follower, had developed decompensated liver disease and visited more than three countries seeking treatment over the last four years but was turned away by most doctors due to the highly risky nature of surgery, Aster CMI Hospital said.

The surgery was challenging compared to a normal liver transplant because in order to protect the patient's religious beliefs, the medical team could not use blood or blood products (Fresh frozen plasma, Cryoprecipitate, Platelets etc), it said in a release, adding that very few such surgeries have been successfully conducted worldwide.

The patient's brother was the donor, the hospital said, adding, without a liver transplant, Gehojadak's chances of survival were less than 10 per cent over the next two years. A team of liver specialists from the Hospital thoroughly reviewed the patient's medical history before recommending a bloodless liver transplant and charted out a feasible pathway to make the surgery a success.

"This transplant was especially challenging as we did not have the safety net (of using blood) even if the patient's life was at risk due to their advance directive. We have performed other non-transplant liver surgeries in Jehovah's Witnesses and this gave us the confidence to take on Gehojadak's transplant," Dr Rajiv Lochan, Consultant Liver Transplant Surgeon, said.

The critical surgery took a 12-hour period to complete where two teams of specialists with close to 25 doctors including anaesthetists, intensivists worked in absolute sync with each other and Gehojadak finally received a life-saving liver transplant, the Hospital said. In a period of two weeks, the patient and his brother were fit enough to go home and were discharged from the hospital.

"Even if their haemoglobin levels dropped to life-threatening levels, the patients were clear that they would not accept a blood transfusion. Keeping the limitations in mind, the most effective treatment path was planned, and we spent close to two months preparing the patients for surgery," Arun V, Consultant Anesthesiologist said. The hospital arranged customised artificial products like synthetic drug molecules, to conduct a bloodless liver transplant, he added.
