BJP defends Pranab, warns Kejriwal against questioning credibility of Prez’s office

New Delhi, Jun 14: BJP today hit out at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for questioning the credibility of the President's office over refusal of assent to a bill on appointment of parliamentary secretaries, and accused him of being "obsessed" about attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for no rhyme or reason.bjp

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said Kejriwal was "frustrated" that his flying ambition has crash-landed and asked him not to make the President's decision a "political issue".

"Office of the President of India and the Election Commission are independent institutions with great credibility. You (Kejriwal) have certain political ambitions, rightly so under a democratic system, but for god's sake don't demean the credibility of the President of India because in the end you are demeaning the democracy of this country," Patra told reporters at the party headquarters here.

Kejriwal, earlier today, accused Modi of indulging in "political vendetta" over the refusal of assent by the President to the bill that protects 21 party MLAs who have been appointed parliamentary secretaries and face the prospect of disqualification, and said BJP is "scared" of AAP and unable to digest its defeat in Delhi.

Asked about the Prime Minister's role in the process as the bill has been turned down by the President and not him, Kejriwal said, "President does not take any decision. Probably the file doesn't even go to him. The decision is taken by the government and Home Ministry decided this."

Patra said the issue of disqualification of 21 MLAs lies before the President and the Election Commission.

"This issue is not with BJP. We don't have to do anything to it," he said, adding that the complainant in the case was an independent lawyer.

He said that as per the existing law formulated in 2006, Delhi is entitled to have one parliamentary secretary and Kejriwal should have ensured its amendment before appointing 21 MLAs as parliamentary secretaries.

"But he was trying to amend it in retrospective and this has been caught red-handed," Patra said.

He alleged that Kejriwal, instead of working for development of Delhi, was only attacking the Prime Minister and was obsessed about it.

New Delhi, Jun 12: The Supreme Court on Friday slammed the Delhi government on news reports showing deplorable condition of medical wards in Delhi, where dead bodies were not only in wards, but were also found in lobby and waiting areas.

The apex court termed the situation in Delhi "horrendous, horrific and pathetic". It slammed the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government for its handling of dead bodies, terming it "very sorry state of affairs".

A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, SK Kaul and MR Shah took suo moto cognizance of the ill-treatment being meted out to Covid patients in hospitals and also the undignified way in which dead bodies of Covid patients were being handled.

Solicitor general Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, said there was a case in Delhi where dead bodies were found alongside patients, who were undergoing treatment.

Justice Shah questioned Mehta, "So what have you done?"

The bench termed the situation in Delhi "horrendous, horrific and pathetic", and reproached the government for patients being placed alongside stacks of dead bodies in the hospitals. The bench noted that patients' families aren't even informed about deaths and in some cases, families haven't been able to attend the last rites, too.

The bench noted that there is a problem with the way the pandemic was being fought in the national capital.

"The number of tests conducted are low in Delhi compared to Chennai and Mumbaia...Why are tests so less in Delhi?" the bench said.

"Nobody should be denied testing onn technical reasons...simplify procedure so more and more can test for Covid," said the bench.

The top court pointed out that it is the duty of the state to conduct testing so that more people know about their health status.

The top court also noted that the situation is grim even in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

New Delhi, Mar 3: Delhi's Tihar Prison authorities had made all necessary preparations for the hanging of four convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape-and-murder case which was scheduled for Tuesday, officials said Monday.

However, on Monday evening, a city court deferred the hanging till further orders.

Postponing the execution, Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana said the hanging cannot be carried out pending disposal of Pawan Gupta's mercy plea before the President, observing any condemned convict must not meet his "Creator" with grievance against courts for not acting fairly on the opportunity to exhaust legal remedies.

"We had made all the necessary arrangements for the execution of the four convicts which was scheduled for Tuesday at 6 AM. Now, the execution has been postponed and we are waiting for the further order by the court," a senior jail official said.

The hanging of the four men -- Mukesh Kumar Singh (32), Vinay Kumar Sharma (26), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan -- who are lodged in Tihar jail, was fixed for March 3 in Tihar jail on a court order.

"We had checked the ropes. Hangman was called and dummy executions were carried out," another senior jail official said.

Barring Pawan, the other three had in the previous weeks moved curative petitions and mercy pleas which were all dismissed.

The first date of execution -- January 22 -- fixed on January 7 was postponed by the court to February 1. But on January 31, the court indefinitely postponed the hanging. On February 17, the court again issued fresh date for execution of death warrants for March 3 at 6 AM.

The court in its orders observed that the four convicts cannot be hanged since a mercy plea of one or the other convict was pending.
