BJP to finalize DK ZP president soon

Mangaluru, Feb 26: The BJP will make a candidate who can give “mass leadership” as the president of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat (ZP) for the next five years, said K. Prathap Simha Nayak, president of the Dakshina Kannada unit of the party.

pratapAddressing presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Nayak said that the choice of the candidate for the post of panchayat president depends on the reservation to be announced by the government. “But the party would ensure that an able party member of the panchayat would be made president,” he said.

Mr. Nayak said that the party has made it to the elected body of the panchayat for the third time.

Though there was no “ruling party advantage factors” for the BJP this time, it had defeated the Congress, he said.

He said that the results of the elections to the zilla and taluk panchayats in the district were a caution to the Congress, which he said had failed to respond to the people.

Mr. Nayak alleged that the “appeasement policy”, misuse of power in the de-limitation of the constituencies and fixing reservations, filing false cases against people boomeranged on the Congress.

He said that District in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai had restricted himself as a “minister for Bantwal Assembly constituency” and not for the entire district.

To a question, he said that the party would continue to take up the Yettinahole project issue and fight against it.

He said that the BJP would give pro-people administration in the zilla and taluk panchayats where it has been elected.

Ganesh Karnik, MLC, and K. Monappa Bhandary, former MLC, were present.

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers. 

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%). 

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.

Bengaluru, Apr 13: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President and former Minister D K Shivakumar has demanded resignation of Minister In-Charge of COVID-19 for his alleged irresponsible comment, despite holding a responsible post.

Mr Shivakumar's comments came after Dr Sudhakar on Sunday shared a picture of him and his children in a swimming pool, on Twitter with a caption, ''After a long time joined my children for swimming hope maintaining social distance here as well…hahaha.''

However, Dr Sudhakar deleted the tweet from his account, soon after he was criticised for sharing such a picture, when the country is facing a health crisis.

Mangaluru, Apr 27: Two more people including an elderly woman have been tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Dakshina Kannada. 

With this the total number of covid-19 cases in the district reached 21, though most of them have recovered and returned home. 

In its today's bulletin, the health and family welfare department confirmed that a 45-year-old man and his 80-year-old mother tested positive for the deadly disease. 

It is learnt that one of them had undergone treatment at a private hospital where a woman from Bantwal, who died of covid-19, was being treated for breathing difficulties, before she was shifted to Wenlock Hospital which is now converted into covid-19 hospital.
