BJP fumes over police communique on withdrawal of case against innocent minorities

A controversy has erupted in Karnataka over a Police communique directing withdrawal of cases registered against "innocent minorities" on charges of rioting among others with BJP today terming it as "Muslim appeasement".

The Congress government, however, rejected the BJP charge and said the circular was applicable to all minorities and also involves those arrested during agitations over inter-state water disputes. 

The circular by Assistant Inspector General of Police Shivaprakash Devaraju and addressed to police commissioners of Mangaluru, Belagavi and superintendents of police of various districts asked them to withdraw cases against the innocent minorities booked on charges of rioting and other offences.

While Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy clarified that the communique, dated yesterday, referred to all minorities including Muslims, Christians, Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs, opposition BJP was quick to term it Congress party's policy of "Muslim appeasement" ahead of coming assembly polls in the state.

"This letter smacks of Muslim appeasement and the anti-Hindu stand of chief minister Siddaramaiah," senior BJP leader and former minister Shobha Karandlaje, MP, tweeted. She further said: "Being born as a Hindu is a sin in CM @siddaramaiah's Raj. Govt going ahead to free people involved in communal clashes from the minority community.Anti Hindu Govt."

Reddy rubbished the charges, saying that the government brings out such circulars from time to time and this particular one had nothing to do with only Muslims. "This circular also involves releasing those who were arrested during the agitations for Mahadayi river and Cauvery river water sharing row. We have made it clear that the cases should not pertain to murder, attempt to murder and there should not be major damage to the properties, he told a Kannada TV channel.

Kalaburagi, Mar 16: Kalaburagi Deputy Commissioner B Sharat has banned the sale of liquor and ordered the closure of bars and restaurants in the district until further orders in the wake of coronavirus scare.

On Sunday, Sharat said that the public gatherings including local markets, village fairs, Urs festival in Kalaburagi district have been banned.

"Gatherings including local markets, village fairs, Urs festival in the district have been banned as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus until further orders," Sharat said.

The Karnataka Health Department on Sunday said that all the family members and other contacts of the 76-year-old man who died of coronavirus in Kalaburagi are being monitored closely.

The state government has said that six cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the state as of now, including one person who died.

"Till date, six COVID-19 cases have been reported in the state including one death. The 5 Coronavirus positive cases are in isolation at the designated hospital in Bengaluru," the government said.

Mandya, July 30: BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel on Wednesday said Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has done a commendable job in tackling the Covid-19 situation and floods and that the question of changing the leadership does not arise.

Karnataka on Wednesday reported 5,503 new cases of Covid-19 and 92 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 1,12,504 and the death toll to 2,147.

Speaking to reporters here, Kateel said, "Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi has gone to Delhi to discuss the projects sanctioned to state with the central minister. There is no need to read too much into it."

Replying to a query on graft charges against the BSY government by the Congress, Kateel said, "Congress national president, state unit president are out on bail in graft cases . Why did a Congress leader who calls himself a bande (rock) has approached court seeking stay on CBI probe? Before making any allegations against the government, they should think about 'irregularities' in Indira Canteen and housing schemes," he charged.

Instead of instilling confidence and hope among the people in these testing times, the Congress is unnecessarily creating fear with petty politics, he told reporters in Shravanabelagola, Hassan district.

"The Yediyurappa-led BJP government is working day and night to tackle the Covid-19. Similarly, several non-governmental organisations have joined hands with the government in the fight against the virus. But, the Congress is only creating confusion by issuing baseless statements," Kateel said.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 27: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday said the issue of return of Non-Resident Keralites (NRKs) to the state has been taken up with the Centre and the state government is awaiting a favourable response.

Vijayan said this in a meeting with Non-Resident Keralites over steps taken by the state government for those wishing to return to the state from foreign countries.

The Chief Minister announced that the Department of Non-Resident Keralites Affairs has opened online registration for such NRKs.

"Those returning should undergo screening at airports. All those returning should undergo mandatory home quarantine for 14 days.

Arrangements of isolation wards will be provided for those unable to go home," said Vijayan.
