BJP holds Karnataka govt responsible for distorted map in Malaysian magazine

June 22, 2015

Bengaluru, Jun 22: Karnataka government today landed in a controversy over a distorted map of India in an advertisement allegedly published by it in a Malaysian magazine, showing part of Jammu and Kashmir and the North-East missing from it.

malaysiaThe BJP, which pointed out the lapse, sought an explanation from the Congress government.

Speaking to PTI, senior BJP spokesperson and former Karnataka Minister Suresh Kumar said it was a very serious matter since it is an issue of sovereignty, which will only "delight" countries who are at loggerheads with India.

"This is a very serious matter which affects the sovereignty of India. Many international forces, including Pakistan and China will take delight in such a lapse," he said.

Kumar said the lapse was "unpardonable" and nobody, specially government, had any right to commit such a grave mistake.

He demanded that the government immediately lodge a complaint with the publisher in Malaysia and ask it to withdraw the controversial advertisement, and also blacklist the agency contracted for the event, in Malaysia.

However, Karnataka Tourism Minister R V Deshpande said the government was not responsible for the lapse since the advertisements were released by agencies contracted for the event, in Malaysia.

"The ad was released by a Singapore-based company which was given the responsibility of the event, in Malaysia. No way, our government is responsible for the lapse. We did not release the ads," he said.

Countering this, Kumar said since the event is being organised by Karnataka Tourism Department, the government cannot shirk its responsibility.

"The programme is being organised by Karnataka Tourism Department, which is a part of the government. Then, how can the minister shirk its responsibility. No, he cannot," he said.

PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association) Travel Mart, an annual PATA signature event and a premier travel trade show in the Asia Pacific region, is being held here in September. PATA is coming to Bengaluru for the first time, and for the third time to India.

New Delhi, Jun 6: With the coronavirus pandemic showing no signs of abating, it seems unlikely that Muslims from India will be able to undertake the Hajj pilgrimage this year.

However, the government will take a final decision on the matter only after Saudi Arabia makes its position on hosting the pilgrimage clear.

A circular issued by the Hajj Committee of India on Friday said only a few weeks are left for the preparatory work in India for Hajj 2020, yet the Saudi authorities have not communicated any further development regarding the pilgrimage.

"In view of the several inquiries received and concerns expressed over uncertainty over Hajj 2020, it has been decided by the Hajj Committee of India that, those pilgrims who desire to cancel their Hajj journey this year, their 100 per cent amount paid so far will be refunded without any deductions," the circular issued by Hajj Committee of India CEO Maqsood Ahmed Khan said.

"Coronavirus cases are increasing in Saudi Arabia and two lakh people have to go from here. We had made preparations, but now there is very little time left. We are waiting for an official word from Saudi Arabia," a top source said.

In response to a question, the source said, "This time, it is unlikely that people will be able to undertake Hajj from India."

Uncertainty has been looming large over this year's Hajj in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and though Saudi Arabia has not made a decision on whether the annual pilgrimage will be held or not, it did ask Muslims to delay their bookings till there is more clarity.

The bilateral annual Hajj 2020 agreement between India and Saudi Arabia was signed last December. In 2020, a total of 2 lakh Indian Muslims were expected to perform Hajj.

Over 95,000 COVID-19 cases and more than 600 deaths have been reported in Saudi Arabia due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Some countries have decided not to send their people for Hajj this time. The most prominent among these is Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population in the world.

The Hajj 2020 is proposed in the period between late July and early August.

The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam which every Muslim is required to complete at least once in their lifetime if they are healthy enough and have the means to do so.

Mangaluru, May 23: In order to ensure that students do not miss out on their studies due to educational institutions being shut owing to the coronavirus lockdown, Dakshina Kannada Pre-university College Principles Association (DKPUCPA) is conducting online classes on YouTube for pre-university students.

The online lessons are shot by lecturers at St Aloysius College and the lectures are then uploaded on YouTube enabling students to watch them online.

"The whole world is currently in a crucial situation because of COVID-19, and because of the lockdown, all are forced to stay indoors. Usually, we used to conduct lectures in a class full of students, but now it is a new experience that we are providing the same information to students in their absence," Rajaram Rao, a lecturer said while speaking to news agency.

He said at present these classes are being conducted for second year pre-university students.

If any student has a doubt on any concept, he said they can contact the teachers. "At present, students also are getting information about the teachers who have uploaded the videos. All the information about the teachers is already being uploaded on the system so that they can contact the teacher," he said.

Dhanya, a student, hailed the DKPUCPA for the setting up of the online classes despite the prevailing situation.

"The teachers who have taught in these classes have taught very well, as if they are teaching right in front of us. It has been very useful for me during this time," she said.

The nationwide lockdown imposed to combat the threat posed by the coronavirus pandemic has been extended to May 31.

The delegation was led by Congress leader Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar.

"They (State government) wants to postpone the election, they have a lot of other provisions. We are demanding to protect the law, the government doesn't have the power to interfere in the system. We will not allow the state government to nominate their party men.

The CM and his entire team is responsible for this, they are killing the democracy and Panchayati Raj system of the State," said Shivakumar while speaking to the reporters.

The local body elections were scheduled to take place in the month of March or April, which were postponed in view of the COVID-19 crisis.
