Bengaluru, Apr 17: Former ministers Katta Subramanya Naidu, S N Krishnaiah Setty and Hartalu Halappa are among the 82 candidates announced by the BJP in its second list for the May 12 Assembly elections.

The BJP had announced 72 candidates, including a majority of sitting MLAs and migrants from other parties, in its first list. Katta was arrested in August 2011 after being indicted by the Lokayukta. He did not contest the 2013 elections. This time, he has been given the ticket to contest from Shivajinagar and will be pitted against R Roshan Baig of the Congress.

Halappa was acquitted recently in a rape case filed against him in 2009. He has been given a ticket to contest from Sagar. Halappa has been preferred over Belur Gopalakrishna. Halappa faced stiff competition from Gopalakrishna. Gopalakrishna’s supporters ransacked the BJP office in Sagar soon after they got to know that their leader had failed to make it to the list.

Setty, too, had to spend some time in prison over a land scam. He had quit the BJP after being denied a ticket in the 2013 elections. He has since made a re-entry into the BJP and has been given a ticket to contest from Malur.

The list has several candidates who contested unsuccessfully in the 2013 elections — Siddu Savadi (Terdal), Srikanth Kulkarni (Jamkhandi), Murgesh Nirani (Bilgi), Veeranna Charantimatt (Bagalkot) among others.

Former minister Sogadu Shivanna, who had identified himself with the Sangolli Rayanna Brigade, has been denied a ticket. The ticket to Tumakuru City, once represented by Shivanna, has been given to former MP G S Basavaraj’s son G B Jyothi Ganesh. Basavaraj is a Yeddyurappa loyalist.

MP B Sriramulu’s relative Sanna Fakirappa has been given a ticket to contest from Ballari Rural. Sriramulu, who usually contested from here will contest from Molkalmuru.

Bengaluru, Jan 13: RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat on Monday held a protest march at Ramnagar district’s
Kapalabetta under the aegis of Hindu Jagran Vedike’s ‘Kanakapura Chalo’ campaign against the construction of the world’s largest Jesus statue there.

Hundreds of protesters of the Vedike staged a protest march in the city starting from the Kanakapura Ayyappaswamy temple.

“We are not here to disturb the peace. We have met each other at the wedding of Sriramulu’s daughter. So you know who I am, DK Shivakumar. How long will you continue with these lies? Is the intention behind the statue of Jesus to solidify your vote bank? Build the statue in America or England, we will not allow it here,” said the RSS leader as the keynote speaker at the rally.

Shivamogga, May 21: An FIR has been registered against Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi in Sagar taluk of Shivamogga district of Karnataka over tweets on May 11 by the party's official handle about PM-CARES fund.

The FIR, registered under Sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), identifies Gandhi as the handler of the social media account.

The complaint by advocate Praveen KV alleged that the Congress party, through the tweets, has made rumourous statements against the Government of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was trying to provoke the people against the government.

According to the FIR, the Congress party had on May 11, 2020, made false and baseless allegations, claimed misappropriation of PM-CARES Fund and cast aspersions on the Government of India through the tweets.

"A Twitter account handled by All India Congress Committee headed by Sonia Gandhi had on May 11, 2020, published tweets terming PM CARES Fund as PM CARES Fraud. They had claimed that the PM CARES fund is not being used for the public," Praveen KV told ANI on Thursday.

He said that he has collected all the details related to the tweets and account from the handle and filed a complaint in the matter, following which a preliminary enquiry was conducted and an FIR was registered in the matter.

"They had also said that the Prime Minister was enjoying and going to foreign trips with this fund. This is clearly rumourous news against the Government of India in this COVID-19 pandemic situation. In this regard, I had filed a complaint. After a primary enquiry, the Sagar Police has filed an FIR against Sonia Gandhi, who heads the INC Twitter account," Praveen KV said.
