Udupi, Oct 6: Activists of Bharatiya Janata Party led by Karkala MLA VSunil Kumar staged a protest against the proposed toll plaza on Karkala - Padubidri State Highway Number 1 at Belman in Karkala taluk on Friday.

Belman is a junction, where roads coming from Shirva, Karkala- Nitte, Mundkur and Padubidri meet. The people from the surrounding villages visit Belman often for different reasons. They fear that they would have to pay toll every time they drive to Belman and return.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Kumar said there was no point in the Public Works Department deciding to collect toll from vehicles at Belman. The toll plaza was expected to come up near the Government Pre-University College at Belman on the Karkala- Padubidiri State Highway and become functional from October 15.

A vehicle coming from Mangaluru to the educational hub of Nitte in Udupi district would have to pay toll at three places – Surathkal, Hejmady, and at the proposed toll gate at Belman, he said.

The foundation stone for the four-laning of the 28-km Padubidri– Karkala stretch of the State Highway Number 1 was taken up in 2012, when the BJP was in power.

The entire amount for the construction of this stretch had been borne by the State government. “How then can toll be imposed on vehicles on this stretch? The government is imposing toll to shore up revenues as its exchequer is empty. The government should withdraw its decision to collect toll here,” Mr. Kumar said.

Reshma Uday Shetty, Uday Kotian, Sumit Shetty, BJP Zilla Panchayat members, Malini J. Shetty, President of Karkala Taluk Panchayat, were among those present at the protest.

Meanwhile, voluntary organizations from 27 villages surrounding Belman village will stage a protest on the same issue at Belman on October 7.

Kolkatta, Mar 19: A local leader of BJP has been arrested for organising a cow urine consumption event in Kolkata, claiming that it will protect people from coronavirus or cure those already infected, leading to a civic volunteer falling ill after drinking it.

The police said that 40-year-old Narayan Chatterjee, who had on Monday organised a cow worship programme at a cowshed and distributed cow urine, was arrested following a complaint filed by the victim.

He had vouched for its "miraculous" properties while offering gaumutra to others.

A civic volunteer, who was on duty near the cow shed also consumed gaumutra and fell sick on Tuesday, following which he lodged a complaint with the police against Chatterjee.

Reacting to the arrest, the state BJP leadership criticised the state government.

"Chatterjee had distributed cow urine, but he didn't fool people in consuming it. When he distributed it he clearly said it was cow urine, he didn't force anyone to drink it. It has not been proved whether it is harmful or not.

"So how can just police arrest him without any reason. This is completely undemocratic," state BJP General Secretary Sayantan Basu said.

West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh has said there is no harm in drinking cow urine and he has no qualms in admitting he consumes it.

His party colleague and MP Locket Chatterjee, however, differed, terming it an "unscientific belief" that should be shunned.

The cow urine distribution as a cure for coronavirus had drawn sharp criticism from the doctors.

Kochi, Mar 2: The Vatican has rejected the second appeal by Sister Lucy Kalappura -- one of the nuns who protested against rape accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal -- against her expulsion from Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC).

In her plea, she had demanded that her version be heard and her expulsion from FCC revoked.

She was expelled from FCC for participating in public protests demanding the arrest of Franco Mulakkal in the nun rape case.

''I got a letter from Vatican which says my appeal has been rejected. But the rest of the letter is written in the Latin language. So after I understand it, I will respond," Sister Lucy told news agency.

''The authorities are contemptuous of those who make such complaints. That is why the letter is written in Latin. Sister Lucy would continue her legal fight in the courts,'' said George Moolechalil, who has been authorised by Sister Lucy to communicate with the media on her behalf.

A petition of Sister Lucy is still pending at Mananthavady Munsif Court at Wayanad that demands that she should not be expelled from the convent where she is staying.

Religious issues should be resolved within the guidelines of devine laws.

Unfortunately the Chrisitianity is no more in its originality.

The holy bible has been systematically abused and edited to the benefits of rulers.

The book has been contaminated with lots of editions.

People should search for truth and follow it.

Example, the religion never told to remain unmarried for priests or nuns.

They go against its teaching inveting their own idea against God's teaching.
