BJP leader booked for molesting acid attack survivor

Bhopal, Feb 19: Police in Madhya Pradesh have registered a case against a BJP leader, who enjoyed the status of minister of state as the vice-chairman of a government body, for allegedly molesting an acid attack survivor.

Taking serious view of the matter, the state government today removed Rajendra Namdeo, the accused, from his post as the the vice-chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Rajya Silai Kala Mandal.

He enjoyed the status of minister of state owing to the post.

The order to remove Namdeo from his post was issued by Rajiv Nigam, deputy secretary, urban administration and housing department.

State BJP president Nandkumar Singh Chouhan suspended Namdeo from the party for six months, after Hanumanganj police station here registered the case of molestation against Namdeo, who hails from Maihar in Satna district, last night.

In the complaint, the 25-year-old woman alleged that in November last year, Namdeo called her to a hotel room near the Bhopal railway station and tried to molest her but she managed to escape, said Additional Superintendent of Police Rajesh Singh Bhadauriya.

"Police have booked him under relevant sections of the IPC. We are interrogating Namdeo," he said.

Namdeo hasn't been arrested yet.

Bhadauriya said the complainant was attacked with acid in Bhopal in 2016. The assailant was arrested and is in jail.

She had approached Namdeo to get some work, he said.

"We are verifying the complaint and also looking into why she took three months to lodge it," he said.

Guna (MP),  Jun 27: A 20-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly eloping with her minor partner and "marrying" her at Guna town in Madhya Pradesh, police said on Saturday.

The matter came to light, when a resident of Budhe Balaji area approached the Kotwali police station on Monday with a complaint that his 17-year-old daughter had gone missing, additional superintendent of police T S Baghel said.

On investigation, it was found that a relative from a village Shivpuri district, who was living with the family, was also missing, he said.

A team was sent to the village and the duo was caught on Friday, the official said, adding that the woman had married the minor, who claimed that she had eloped of her own volition.

The woman was arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, while the minor was sent back to her family after counselling.

Bengaluru, Apr 12: Two police officials have been booked for murder in connection with the alleged custodial death of a theft accused in Bengaluru rural district, police said on Saturday.

A case of murder has been registered against inspector Raghu and sub-inspector Rakesh C for the alleged custodial death of Munikulla on Friday afternoon, Superintendent of Police, Bengaluru rural district, Ravi D Channannavar told reporters.

"Yes. A case has been registered and transferred to CID," he said.

Munikulla, a resident of Nadavatti village, was picked up by the police on April 7, his wife Dhanalakshmi told the media on Saturday.

"Policemen took my husband with them. They beat him up and killed him," she said.

Alleging that Munikulla was a victim of police high- handedness, Hoskote MLA Sharath Bachegowda said he had lodged a complaint with the state DGP Praveen Sood demanding a CID inquiry into the case.

An FIR was registered against Munikulla on Friday evening based on a complaint by the cashier of the liquor store, who had claimed that the CCTV footage showed victim's involvement.

Vijayawada, Aug 9: The number of those killed in the fire at a hotel being used as a COVID-19 facility in Vijayawada rose to 10 on Sunday, said Vikrant Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government announced Rs 50 lakh ex-gratia each to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.

According to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister's Office (CMO), Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy also ordered an in-depth probe into the accident and directed authorities to take steps to ensure better medical services to the victims of the accident.

"The hotel was taken on lease and run by Ramesh Hospitals, a private hospital where COVID-19 patients were being treated. 40 patients and 10 medical staff were at the hotel at the time of the incident. 

Officials were directed to launch immediate rescue measures," said Mekathoti Sucharitha, Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the loss of the lives in the fire mishap and spoke to Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy over the phone and enquired about the accident.

The mishap took place in hotel Swarna Palace which was taken on lease and run by a private hospital for COVID patients.
