BJP may prefer Cong as main opposition in LS

New Delhi, May 23: The BJP-led NDA prefers to have a mem­ber of the Congress as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha to avoid the Narenda Modi government getting into a direct confrontation with three regional players who may form a bloc and stake a claim for the august post.

BJP leaders argue they might need the support of the AIADMK, BJD and the TMC, who are trying to form an alliance to outsmart the Congress in the race for the post, for building consensus to push through legislations in the Upper House.modi

That is the reason the NDA would like to avoid a confrontationist approach with the regional satraps.

A BJP leader said it would be politically expedient to face a demoralised and depleted Congress that has been reduced to a historic low in the just concluded polls, than taking on the state chief ministers.

The three regional parties that withstood the Narendra Modi wave in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Odisha together can form a bloc of 91 seats. The Congress has 44 MPs in LS and with UPA allies, the tally goes up to 58.

The move, first mooted by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, during campaigning, to get on board her Tamil Nadu counterpart Jayalalitha, had drawn sharp reaction from Narendra Modi.

The prime minister designate had said in Varanasi that parties outside the ruling coalition may have to form an alliance to get the formal status of a recognised Opposition leader.

Former UPA law minister M Veerappa Moily on Wednesday stressed that the Congress is entitled to get the LoP slot by law which states that a party in the opposition with the maximum number of MPs is eligible to stake claim.

New Delhi, Jan 8: Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) President Aishe Ghosh has filed a complaint over the violence that took place at the varsity campus on Sunday.

"I am filing this complaint for the incident in which a mob conspired and acted with common intention to assault, intimidate and attempt to murder me, and request you to register an FIR and apprehend culprits at the earliest," the complaint read.

She said that on January 5, in the afternoon, she received information from students in the campus that some students affiliated to ABVP along with other unidentified men and women had gathered with weapons like rods, sledgehammers and lathis near Ganga Bus Stop.

"I along with Nikhil Mathew (MA Labour Studies) who was also present there, were surrounded by a group of persons of that mob most of whom were wearing masks. The mob of 20-30 persons dragged me behind a car standing near the 24*7 and surrounded me and despite my pleading did not let me go and attacked me with rods while I had fallen down. I remember that one of the people was of medium height wearing a brownish-red sweatshirt with UCLA written on it. I saw his face as he was facing me and did not have a mask on and can identify him if I see him," Ghosh wrote in her complaint.

"I was attacked by the above-mentioned persons collectively and was hit on the head multiple times with iron rods. I fell to the ground and my head started bleeding, and some of them kicked me and hit me with the rod on my hand and rest of the body including my head, chest and back."

"I am attaching with this complaint a copy of the MLC which details my injuries. Nikhil Mathew tried to save me but was also hit with an iron hammer and other weapons on his head and arms. The intention of the group of men and their acts was definitely to murder me and other persons associated with me," she said.

New Delhi, Mar 29: The total number of COVID-19 positive cases rose to 1024 in the country, said Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday.

"The total number of COVID-19 positive cases rise to 1024 in India including 901 active cases, 96 cured/discharged/migrated people and 27 deaths," Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Tuesday announced a 21-day lockdown to stem the spread of COVID-19, which has left thousands dead around the world.

Pathanamthitta, Aug 9 : An orange alert has been issued in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district as the water level in Pamba dam is now flowing at 983.05 metres and it is likely to reach 983.50 metres within an hour.

A red alert will be declared at 984.5 metres and dam will open when the water level reaches 985 metres.

"The water level in Pamba dam is 983.05 metres now and is likely to reach 983.50 metres within an hour. So, the second alert- orange alert has been issued. A red alert will be declared at 984.5 metres and dam will open when it reaches 985 metres," said Pathanamthitta District Collector.

Meanwhile, a portion of the Shiva Temple in Aluva continues to remain submerged. However, the water level in the Periyar River is receding gradually and more part of the temple is above the water level now. 

As Kerala has been receiving heavy rain for the past few days, severe waterlogging affects traffic movement at Mannuthy bypass in Thrissur on Saturday.

On Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert in Kozhikode district. It had also predicted rainfall in different parts of the state.

Due to heavy downpour, a massive landslide had occurred in Idukki district recently. The death toll in Idukki landslide has risen to 26, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Saturday.

The Chief Minister said that monsoon fury continues to be severe in the state.
