Tumakuru, Feb 19: At least two persons lost their lives when a speeding SUV, in which BJP leader and Chikkamagaluru MLA C T Ravi was travelling, rammed into a parked vehicle near Kunigal bypass in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Mr Ravi, who also sustained minor injuries in the mishap, was admitted to a hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred at around 1:45 a.m. “Two cars - a Swift and Scorpio - were parked on the highway. Two persons had alighted from one of the cars. It was at this moment that CT Ravi’s car hit both the vehicles and in the process, dragged both the men for around 50 m before screeching to a halt. Both of them died on the spot,” a policeman was quoted as assaying by a TV channel.

When the police reached the accident spot, the driver of the MLA’s car had escaped and the MLA was in a state of shock.  A few local media reports claimed that MLA was behind the wheels in an inebriated state. However, The BJP’s state media convenor, S Shantaram, in a statement refuted the reports.

A case has been registered in Kunigal Police Station under sections 279 (rash driving), 336 (Whoever does any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life) and 304A (death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

It is learnt that the deceased were returning from Kollur Temple in Udipi to Bengaluru. They were urinating on the side of the road when CT Ravi's car hit them and their car, a source said.

"CT Ravi was present at the accident spot till the bodies were taken care of and the injured shifted to a hospital. He left the place only after the police permitted him and the car was taken for further investigation," the statement said.

Friends of the victims claimed that CT Ravi, along with the driver, should be held responsible for the accident. The driver is currently admitted in the hospital. He will be taken into custody later.
