BJP MLAs in touch with us, but we’ll not conduct any operation, says Mahesh

Mysuru, Jun 4: Senior JD(S) leader and Karnataka tourism minister SR Mahesh on Monday pointed out that discontent was simmering not only in the parties of the ruling coalition, but also in the BJP. “MLAs from the BJP have communicated with leaders in the JD(S). But we will not launch any operation to rope them into our party fold,” said Mahesh, adding that there was no need for the JD(S) to engage in such an exercise.

The minister claimed that the BJP was not a united house as was being projected by the leaders of the party. “The party has 105 members in the assembly, and there are differences within the BJP. But we will not exploit it for our needs,” Mahesh added.

Amid speculations of JD(S) Karnataka president Adagooru H Vishwanath tendering his resignation to the post, Mahesh said that the party leaders would make all efforts to prevent such a possibility. “Vishwanath is a senior leader, with enormous experience. He must guide us, and help organise our party,” Mahesh said.

The tourism minister pointed out that Vishwanath had offered to resign as JD(S) state president twice before, but owing to health problems. “But we dissuaded him from doing so. This time round, he is keen on resigning owing to personal reasons,” said Mahesh.

The minister said that chief minister HD Kumaraswamy had convened a meeting of all the legislators of the JD(S) in Bengaluru on Tuesday. “We will convince Vishwanath not to tender his resignation. The party’s general secretary will also be appointed at the meeting,” he added.

Mahesh, also the district in-charge minister for Kodagu, scotched rumours of the state government ordering resorts and homestays in the hilly district to stay shut as a precautionary measure before the onset of the monsoon season. “The Makkandur gram panchayat banned advance booking within its jurisdiction. The state government, however, has issued no such order, nor has the Kodagu district administration,” he said.

Nikhil Kumaraswamy, the CM’s son, Mahesh said, would accompany his father during the village stay programme planned in Mandya. “I welcome the CM for a sojourn in a Kodagu village as part of his initiative,” the minister added.

Mahesh, meanwhile, said that relocation of Harangi Dam, a demand made by locals in Kodagu district, was not a viable option. “But we will try our best to solve their problems,” he said.

Kasaragod, Jul 26: First funeral, now wedding. Forty-three persons who attended a wedding at Pilankatta in Chengala panchayat in Kasaragod on July 17 have tested positive for Covid-19, said district medical officer (DMO) A V Ramdas.

They include the bride and the groom. Collector D Sajith Babu has asked all those who attended the wedding to go into home quarantine for 14 days. Those with Covid symptoms should get in touch with the nearest primary health centre, he said.

The DMO said samples of 128 persons linked to the wedding were tested, of which 43 turned out positive. Earlier, 44 persons who attended a funeral in Cherkala in the first week of July had tested positive. The funeral was declared a cluster and the government had to test 522 persons linked to the funeral.

The collector said those taking part in funeral or weddings without following the Covid protocol would be booked under the Kerala Epidemic Diseases Act. If convicted, they would face up to two years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of `10,000. Kasaragod police said they will register a case in connection with the wedding.

Pilankatta ward member Abdulla Kunhi K B said it was not a big fat wedding. The ceremony held at the bride’s house at Pilankatta was attended by less than 100 people, he said.“Theirs is a big family with four houses in one compound.

As many as 30 members are staying in these houses,” said Kunhi. Nine of the 30 have tested positive.Of the 15 guests, who came from the bride’s mother’s house, 12 contracted the infection. “The rest of the infected persons were among the groom’s guests,” said Kunhi, who did not attend the wedding. The groom and the bride’s father returned from Dubai three months ago.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 7: Kerala government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday has come under the spotlight for depicting the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on the cover of the state finance budget 2020-21 document.

Issuing clarification on the same, Issac justified that it is a political statement.

"Definitely, it is a political statement, the cover of my budget speech. It is a painting by a Malayalam artist of Mahatma Gandhi's murder scene. We are sending out a message that we will not forget who murdered Gandhi."

He also alleged that history is being re-written and National Register of Citizens (NRC) is being used to divide the country on communal lines.

"This is important at the times when history is being re-written. There is an attempt to erase some popular memories and use NRC to divide the population on communal lines. Kerala will stand united."

NRC is an official record of those people who are legal citizens of India. The dossier includes demographic information about all those individuals who qualify as citizens of India as per the Citizenship Act, 1955.

The register was first prepared after the 1951 Census of India and since then it has not been updated until recently.
