Mangaluru, Jan 1: Nalin Kumar Kateel, a senior BJP leader and Member of Parliament from Dakshina Kannada, on Sunday welcomed the New Year by threatening to arson his own constituency after accusing the police of inefficiency.

The hardline Hindutva leader was speaking at a protest meet organised by the Hindu Hitharakshana Vedike in front of the Konaje police station in Mangaluru taluk after a silent march from nearby Pajir town demanding the arrest of the accused in the murder case of Karthik Raj, a local youth who was hacked to death by unidentified miscreants near Konaje on October 22.

“We are giving you (police) 10 days to arrest the culprits behind the murder. If you can't arrest them, then we are capable of setting Dakshina Kannada district ablaze without delay. Yes we can do that,” said an angry Kateel.

In his controversial speech, the MP not only threatened to arson Dakshina Kannada district but claimed that the “terrorists from Kerala” would come here and arson the district! He then questioned whether the police, who were not seen during the protest march, had gone to arson (the district)?

The MP also held local congress MLA U T Khader, who is also the minister for food and civil supplies, responsible for the rampant criminal activities in Ullal-Konaje region. Ironically, he then held “terrorists from Kerala” responsible for the same!

Mr Kateel, then all of a sudden turned secular and said that Muslims, Hindus and Christians are not responsible for the criminal activities in Dakshina Kannada district. “Terrorism of Kerala is behind all these. Terror activities from Kerala have spread to this district through its border town Ullal. If you close your eyes, terrorists of Kerala will burn down the district,” he said.

BJP Mangaluru Assembly unit president Santosh Kumar Boliyar said that the constituency witnesses a greater number of untoward incidents as compared to other constituencies in the district. He warned that a dharna would be staged right outside the police station if the accused in the Kartik Raj murder case are not arrested within 10 days.

Hindu Jagarana Vedike Vittal taluk unit convener Ganaraj Bhat Kedila said that if one considers the horrific incidents taking place in Ullal, one would wonder if one is witnessing a part of India or Pakistan. Even though the police honestly probe into the case, the government is unnecessarily interfering, he added.

Former MLA K Jayaram?Shetty, BJP district executive committee member Rajesh Shetty Pajiruguttu, ZP member Dhanalakshmi Gatti and Pajir Gram Panchayat President Seetaram Shetty were present.

Finally Kateel spoke the truth. His ultimate aim is setting the district ablaze. I think he spoke truth because of last night's new year party.

Mangaluru, May 23: In order to ensure that students do not miss out on their studies due to educational institutions being shut owing to the coronavirus lockdown, Dakshina Kannada Pre-university College Principles Association (DKPUCPA) is conducting online classes on YouTube for pre-university students.

The online lessons are shot by lecturers at St Aloysius College and the lectures are then uploaded on YouTube enabling students to watch them online.

"The whole world is currently in a crucial situation because of COVID-19, and because of the lockdown, all are forced to stay indoors. Usually, we used to conduct lectures in a class full of students, but now it is a new experience that we are providing the same information to students in their absence," Rajaram Rao, a lecturer said while speaking to news agency.

He said at present these classes are being conducted for second year pre-university students.

If any student has a doubt on any concept, he said they can contact the teachers. "At present, students also are getting information about the teachers who have uploaded the videos. All the information about the teachers is already being uploaded on the system so that they can contact the teacher," he said.

Dhanya, a student, hailed the DKPUCPA for the setting up of the online classes despite the prevailing situation.

"The teachers who have taught in these classes have taught very well, as if they are teaching right in front of us. It has been very useful for me during this time," she said.

The nationwide lockdown imposed to combat the threat posed by the coronavirus pandemic has been extended to May 31.

The government of India has added 141 more flights to West Asian countries for the second phase of Vande Bharat Mission, its massive repatriation programme for citizens stranded overseas because of Covid-19-related travel restrictions.

The second phase was to end on May 22. However, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said the ongoing phase will last till June 13 and that India is looking at making Frankfurt a hub for the mission.

With these new flights, more than half of them to the United Arab Emirates, the total number of flights in the second phase of the programme have gone up to more than 400, people familiar with developments said on condition of anonymity.

The flights were added due to increased demand from citizens stranded in West Asian countries and the availability of adequate quarantine facilities in states for the returning Indians, the people said. As with all the flights operated so far under Vande Bharat Mission, priority will be given in the second phase to Indian nationals with compelling reasons for returning to the country, they added.

The additional flights are from the UAE (81 flights), Oman and Saudi Arabia (15 flights each), Kuwait (14 flights), Qatar (11 flights) and Bahrain (five flights).

A majority of the flights are bound for Kerala (84 flights), while the other destinations are Delhi (10 flights), Tamil Nadu (nine flights), Telangana (six flights) Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir (five flights each), Bihar, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh (four flights each), Punjab (three flights), Odisha and West Bengal (two flights each), Chandigarh, Karnataka and Goa (one flight each).

The other 260-odd flights being operated during the second phase of Vande Bharat Mission are from Armenia, Australia, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Oman, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Tajikistan, the UK, Ukraine and the US.

The second phase of the repatriation programme began on May 16 and will continue till June 13, with all the flights being operated by state-run Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express. Private airlines are likely to be included in the third phase.

As of Thursday, a total of 23,475 Indians have been repatriated under Vande Bharat Mission. The second phase had included new destinations such as Istanbul, Ho Chi Minh City and Lagos, and had increased flights to the US and Europe.

More than 259,000 Indians in 98 countries across the world have registered to return under Vande Bharat Mission. Most of them are workers (28%), students (25%), professionals (14.5%), and short-term visa holders such as tourists (7.6%). Fishermen, deportees and Indian nationals who benefited from visa amnesties have also registered.
