BJP MP Pratap Simha among 100 detained for violating prohibitory orders

Mysuru, Dec 3: Pratap Simha, the Karnataka chief of BJP Yuva Morcha, who was asked by the party supremo Amit Shah to hold more and more anti-government protests in the state, on Saturday courted arrested along with around 100 saffron activists at Hunsur in Mysuru district for violating prohibitory orders.

The Mysuru district police has permitted the organisers of the Hanuma Jayanthi in Hunsur to take out its procession on a specified route, while imposing prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in the rest of the town.

Police said the gathering of Mr Simha, who is also the MP of Mysuru-Kodagu constituency, and his followers had violated the prohibitory orders, posing a threat to law and order in the communally sensitive town.

Heavy police security had been deployed in Hunsur since Saturday for the Meelad and Hanuma Jayanthi celebrations.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed in the town with supporters of Mr. Simha staging a protest demanding his release.

Landslide at borewell site: Man trapped in 15-feet deep hole rescued after 6 hours

Udupi, Feb 16: A man, who was trapped in 15-feet-deep hole following a landslide during borwell digging work at a remote area in the coastal district, was finally rescued after a prolonged effort today.

The man, identified as Rohit, suffered minor injuries in the incident.

The incident took place at Maravanthe village near Baindur in Udupi district.

Rohit was trapped when the land around borewell was being dug collapsed suddenly. It took around six hours for the rescue workers to rescue him.

VBM repatriation flight from Dammam lands in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, June 21: The first ever repatriation flight from Saudi Arabia’s Dammam Karnataka’s Mangaluru under Vande Bharat Mission (VBM) today brought home around 165 stranded passengers.

The IndiGo flight took off from Dammam International Airport at 11 a.m. (Saudi time) and landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 6:30 p.m.

The stranded passengers included pregnant women, senior citizens and those who are in need of emergency medical treatment are on board.

The passengers were screened at the Airport before being despatched for institutional quarantine in special buses.

Even though a few charter flights arranged by a couple of NRI entrepreneurs have already repatriated hundreds of stranded people from Dammam to Mangaluru, the government of India had not operated any repatriation flight under VBM on this sector so far.

Saudi Kannadigas Humanity Forum (SKHF), an NGO which came into existence to help the stranded Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia during covid-19 lockdown had been successful in persuading the government of India operate a flight on Dammam-Mangaluru sector under VBM.

SKHF has also set up an online portal for those who were in need of emergency repatriation. In today’s flight around 100 passengers have obtained seats through SKHF.

Protest erupts against BJP leader who dubbed freedom fighter Doreswamy as ‘Pakistani agent’

Bengaluru, Feb 26: Congress leaders on Wednesday staged a protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue at Vidhana Soudha here against BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yathnal's alleged remarks accusing freedom fighter HS Doreswamy of being a "Pakistani agent".

Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah, KPCC working president Eashwar Khandre also joined the protest.

Yathnal on Tuesday called Doreswamy a fake freedom fighter and a Pakistani agent, while addressing the media.

His comments triggered a controversy drawing sharp remarks from Congress and other parties.

Congress has demanded an apology from Yathnal and has also urged that his Assembly membership be cancelled.

"Session proceedings will not continue until Yathnal apologises," said senior Congress leader HK Patil while addressing the protest earlier today.

Siddaramaiah asserted that making "provocative" comments against such a freedom fighter is obnoxious.

Former KPCC president Dr G Parameshwar said: "Yathnal is a criminal who had mentioned in his election affidavit that he had 27 cases against him. He has made such loose comments against the freedom fighter. He should apologise for his remarks."
