BJP pitches for anti-conversion law

December 20, 2014

Anti-conversion lawKochi, Dec 20: As the NDA Government continued to face opposition heat over the conversion issue, BJP President Amit Shah today pitched for an anti-conversion law in the country and wanted the 'so called secular' political parties to support such a measure in Parliament.

"BJP is the only political party in the country that opposes forceful conversion and the so called secular political parties should come forward to support an anti-conversion legislation," he said here.

Shah was talking to reporters, winding up his two–day visit to state to gear up for the party organisational structure to face challenges of local body and assembly elections to be held in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

When asked whether BJP would hold talks with minorities' outfits on the matter, he said further steps on the legislation can be taken up only after a consensus was evolved among political parties in the country.

On the controversial 'Ghar Wapsi' (conversion ceremony) by a Hindutva group in Uttar Pradesh, Shah said the matter was now before the court.

"I do not want to make comment on the issue till the court decides," he added.

Dismissing Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi's charge that NDA-led by BJP was dividing the people on communal lines, he said 'no such thing has taken place in the country'.

On criticism that BJP had taken a 'u-turn' on several issues, particularly on Aadhar and black money, he said the party-led government was committed to bringing back black money stashed away abroad.

BJP was not totally against Aadhar, he said adding it was concerned about certain issues regarding its implementation and necessary changes in this regard were being worked out.

After coming to power, the first action of the NDA was to set up a Special Investigation Team to unearth black money, he pointed out. Bilateral talks with foreign countries were also on to remove hurdles in bringing back black money.

The Finance Ministry had sent a special team to Switzerland and after that government of that country had agreed to cooperate with India, he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken up the issue in international fora and was on a move to arrive at a consensus among countries, he said.

"BJP led NDA has done much more in last six months than what the Congress-led UPA did in ten years to bring back black money stashed away in foreign countries", Shah added.

Listing the achievements of the NDA Government, Shah said the country's economy was moving in the path of right growth rate after the slow down witnessed during the previous UPA regime.

On External affairs matters, he said India has emerged as a global power now.

"India is changing its perception in the eyes of world. India is being praised in countries where Prime Minister is travelling," he said.

The BJP President expressed confidence that party would come to power in Jammu and Kashmir in the current elections.

With regard to Kerala, where the party has been unsuccessful so far in opening its account in state assembly or Lok Sabha, Shah said a vigorous membership campaign was on and the target was to have 40 lakh party cadres.

He also said party would become a major political force in the state assembly after the next polls.

BJP State President V Muraleedharan was among the leaders present at the press meet.

New Delhi, May 30: An Air India flight from Delhi to Moscow on Saturday had to return midway after the airline's ground team found out that one of the pilots had tested positive for novel coronavirus, officials said.

"When the A320 plane, which did not have any passengers as it was heading to Moscow to bring back stranded Indians under Vande Bharat Mission, had reached Uzbekistan's airspace, our team on ground realised that one of the pilots had tested COVID-positive," senior Air India officials said.

"The flight was immediately asked to return. It came back to Delhi at around 12.30 pm on Saturday," the officials said. The crew has been quarantined. Another plane would be sent to Moscow to bring back the stranded Indians, according to the officials.

New Delhi, Apr 24: The Central government said on Wednesday that the number of COVID-19 cases in the country is now doubling in every 10 days, adding that had the lockdown not been imposed on time, the number of cases would have sky-rocketed to over one lakh by now.

"Had we not taken the decision to impose nationwide lockdown, we would have had around one lakh COVID-19 cases by now. This is a reasonable estimate," said Niti Aayog member V.K. Paul.

Paul, who is also the Chairman of the government's Empowered Committee- 1, said the "cases are now doubling in every 10 days."

"As on March 21, our doubling time of cases was three days. Results started showing on March 23, due to travel restrictions imposed earlier. On April 6, further slowing of doubling rate became visible, thanks to the nationwide lockdown," he added.

He further added that the decision to impose the lockdown was timely and asserted that the curve has begun to flatten.

"Nationwide lockdown helped take us away from the exponential growth curve and thereby contain the growth of COVID-19 cases," he said.

Paul further added that surveillance has been a great strength in containing the spread of the virus.

"Besides containing the spread, augmenting testing and improving preparedness, the nation has brought about a massive behavioural change through a ‘Jan Andolan' (mass movement)," he said.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed cases in the country has crossed the 23,000-mark, with 718 deaths. Globally, the number of cases has crossed 2.7 million while the death toll has mounted to 1.9 lakh.

New Delhi, Jun 19: RJD and AAP were not invited to the all-party meeting called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday to discuss the situation at the India-China border after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in a "violent face-off," leaving the parties fuming.

Top RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav criticised the government for not inviting the party to the meeting, asking on Twitter late Thursday night, "Just wish to know the criteria for inviting political parties for tomorrow's (Friday's) all-party meet on Galwan Valley. I mean the grounds of inclusion/exclusion. Because our party hasn't received any message so far."

AAP's Rajya Sabha leader Sanjay Singh joined the chorus, "there is a strange ego-driven government at the centre. AAP has a government in Delhi and is the main opposition in Punjab. We have four MPs. But on a vital subject, AAP's views are not needed? The country is waiting for what the Prime Minister will say at the meeting."

Sources said the government has set a criteria to invite only parties with five or more MPs in Parliament for the digital meet, where the Prime Minister will brief the top leaders of parties and hear their views on the way ahead. There are at least 27 parties in the Parliament, which have less than five members, while 17 have more than five members or more than five MPs.

Interestingly, RJD has five MPs in Rajya Sabha and its senior MP Manoj K Jha shared the Rajya Sabha website link on Twitter, which showed the party has five MPs. "We have not been invited and the government's bogus argument has been exposed," Jha said.

CPI leaders said General Secretary D Raja received a call from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inviting him to the meeting and with a message that the Prime Minister's Office would coordinate but there was no follow-up after that.

"Exclusion of AAP and RJD in the all-party meet on a National debate does not augment well. AAP is ruling Delhi and has its CM. Why should people of Delhi be kept out in such an important debate on National integrity and Sovereignty?" former NCP MP Majeed Memon tweeted.

During the all-party meeting on COVID-19 too, the government had not called all parties with representation in Parliament to the all-party meeting in April and had set five MPs as a benchmark to be invited.

Raja had then written a letter to Modi demanding that the government should not get into "technicalities" and discuss the issue with all parties in Parliament.
