Bengaluru, Jan 1: The Karnataka BJP will come out with a charge sheet on the “failures” and “non-implementation” of the promises made by the Congress government by January 16.

The youth wing of the party will then disseminate the contents of the charge sheet to each and every household in all 224 Assembly constituencies between February 15 and 22.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting chaired by BJP national president Amit Shah to review the Assembly poll preparedness of the party at a private resort on the outskirts of the city on Sunday.

The meeting was attended by top state leaders, functionaries, state election in-charge Prakash Javadekar and Piyush Goyal.

Briefing reporters, Union Minister Ananth Kumar said conventions of the SC/ST, OBC and women morchas of the party will be organised in each of the Assembly constituencies in February.

Micro-level planning

He said the party had constituted around 55,000 booth committees across the state. As a step forward, the party will appoint an “in-charge” for every 30-50 voters.

“Usually, the list in a polling booth has around 900 voters and runs into 25 to 30 pages. We will appoint an incharge for each page in the list. The incharge will have built a rapport with the voters entrusted to him by the time elections are held,” Kumar said.

He said the Nava Karnataka Nirmana Parivarthana Yatra led by party state president B S Yeddyurappa was getting excellent response across the state.

“The yatra has entered the 145th constituency. In contrast, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is on government tour only in constituencies won by the Congress, while JD(S) president H D Kumaraswamy has given up his yatra mid-way,” Kumar said.

BJP leaders B S Yeddyurappa, Jagadish Shettar, K S Eshwarappa, among others, were present.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 18: Bindhu Sampath, the mother of Nimisha alias Fathima who travelled from Kerala to Afghanistan to join the Islamic State (IS), has sought the Central government's help to bring her daughter back to India.

"I saw a video of my daughter in which she was requesting her return to India. She has realised that India is her country, not Afghanistan. She is scared that she'll be put in jail over there. Responding to my mail, the Afghanistan government has said that the procedure will take time," said Bindhu Sampath.

"I believe in Indian laws. Let her be questioned and realise what is good or bad. I am waiting for the Central government's confirmation on the matter," added Sampath.

Around four years back, a team of 21 members which consisted of couples and children went to Syria from Kerala to join ISIS and lead an Islamic life. After they left, police registered a case against them, which has been handled by the National Investigation Agency.

University of Oxford researchers have claimed that a cheap and widely available drug called dexamethasone can help save the lives of patients who are seriously ill with coronavirus.

Scientists working on the Recovery Trial found the drug could help patients on ventilators and oxygen, but had no effect on those who did not need help breathing.

“Based on these results, one death would be prevented by treatment of around eight ventilated patients or around 25 patients requiring oxygen alone,” researchers said in a statement.

Matt Hancock, the health secretary, tweeted: “This global first exemplifies the power of science.”

“I’m absolutely delighted that today we can announce the first successful clinical trial for a treatment for Covid-19,” Mr Hancock said.

Recovery Trial experts said a randomised group of 2,104 patients was given 6mg of dexamethasone per day for 10 days, while another group of 4,321 were given normal treatment.

Dexamethasone reduced deaths by one-fifth in patients on oxygen feeds and by one-third in those who needed a ventilator to breathe, preliminary results showed.

Mr Hancock added: “This is a huge step forward and it’s because we’ve backed the science.”

Martin Landray, professor of medicine and epidemiology at the Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford, and one of the trial’s chief investigators, said in a statement: “These preliminary results from the Recovery Trial are very clear – dexamethasone reduces the risk of death among patients with severe respiratory complications.

“Covid-19 is a global disease – it is fantastic that the first treatment demonstrated to reduce mortality is one that is instantly available and affordable worldwide.”
