BJP to select Lok Sabha candidates in January

Lucknow, Dec 11: Buoyed by the electoral successes in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Delhi, the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to fast track its preparations for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Senior leaders said that the party leadership will select candidates Jan 15 onwards for the polls.

"The winds of change are sweeping the country and we would like to continue the momentum in UP which sends 80 MP's to the Lok Sabha. Hence, the candidates selection has to be done in the right earnest," a senior leader said.

Former UP chief minister Kalyan Singh said Wednesday that while winnability would certainly be a criterion for selection of candidates and clean image will also be considered.

Predicting that the politics in the country was at a turning point, Singh also pointed out that the BJP would get 50 plus seats in the state which was currently yearning for change under the BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

"Casteist and other brands of politics would soon be things of the past and development will be the sole mantra," Kalyan Singh said.

Senior party leaders also said that a recce had already been done on some new and fresh faces that would be put up in the Lok Sabha polls.

Party insiders, however, confirmed that there was unanimity in the party to repeat all its 10 sitting MP's from the state. The party has also started coordinating and getting feedback with its various wings and frontal organisations to zero in on prospective candidates.

"Image before the people is very important and we will be considering this as a  crucial point of selection in the run up to the final selection" a senior leader said.

As many as employees of Zee News have tested positive for the coronavirus, Editor-in-Chief Sudhir Chaudhary said on Monday. Most of them are asymptomatic, he said, tweeting an official statement from Zee News about the situation.

The organisation said that on May 15, one of its employees tested positive for the coronavirus. Following this, the company started testing employees who may have come in contact with the employee. Twenty-seven more were found to be infected.

“Fortunately most of them are asymptomatic and are not complaining of any discomfort,” Zee News said. “We believe this is because of early diagnosis and proactive intervention.”

The news network said all guidelines and protocols have been followed, and its office, newsroom and studios have been sealed for sanitisation. The Zee News team has been shifted to an alternative facility.

“At the moment, Zee Media Corporation has 2,500 employees, by far the largest in the private sector,” the company said. “We are committed to the safety of each one of them.”

Chaudhary also claimed that “those who are infected had the option of sitting at home and sharing memes”. “They came to work because they are committed professionals.”

Following this, some social media users claimed that Zee News employees found infected with Covid-19 were still at work. In response, Chaudhary alleged that a malicious campaign was being conducted to distort his statement. He said no infected employee had come to work, and all the contacts of the employee who tested positive on May 15 had been tested and quarantined.

Over the past two months, journalists from several media organisations have tested positive for the coronavirus. On April 21, 26 employees of a Tamil news channel based in Chennai tested positive for the coronavirus. The previous day, over 50 journalists from Mumbai were found infected, after samples of over 170 journalists were tested.

On May 7, a newspaper journalist died of the coronavirus in Agra. Some states, such as Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Delhi, have tested journalists for Covid-19.

New Delhi, Jun 13: India's COVID-19 tally on Saturday witnessed its highest-ever spike of 11,458 cases, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

A total of 386 deaths have been reported due to the infection during the last 24 hours.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 3,08,993 including 1,45,779 active cases 1,54,330 cured/discharged/migrated and 8,884 deaths.

COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra continue to soar with the number reaching 101141. Tamil Nadu's coronavirus count stands at 40,698 while cases in Delhi reached 36,824.

New Delhi, Aug 3: India's COVID-19 tally crossed the 18 lakh mark with 52,972 positive cases and 771 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

The total COVID-19 cases stand at 18,03,696 including 5,79,357 active cases, 11,86,203 cured/discharged/migrated and 38,135 deaths," said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday.

As per the data provided by the Health Ministry, Maharashtra -- the worst affected state from the infection -- has a total of 1,48,843 active cases and 15,576 deaths. A total of 4,41,228 coronavirus cases have been recorded in the state up to Sunday.

Tamil Nadu has reported a total of 56,998 active cases and 4,132 deaths. While Delhi has recorded 10,356 active cases, 1,23,317 recovered/discharged/migrated cases and 4,004 deaths.

The COVID-19 samples tested across the country has crossed the 2 crore mark till August 2.

The total number of COVID-19 samples tested up to August 2 is 2,02,02,858 including 3,81,027 tests that were conducted yesterday, said Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Monday.
