BJP set to form government in Jharkhand

December 23, 2014

Ranchi/New Delhi, Dec 23: The BJP Tuesday said it was ready to form a stable government in Jharkhand, with party president Amit Shah crediting the election victory to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.bjp jharkhand

"It is for the first time that people of Jharkhand have given a clear mandate in an assembly election to the BJP," Shah told journalists in New Delhi. "We will form a majority government."

Shah said his party was poised to win 41 seats in the 81-member assembly. Its ally, the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), won four seats.

He credited the victory in Jharkhand -- and the BJP's good showing in Jammu and Kashmir -- to the achievements of Modi's six-month-old central government.

"People's love and respect for Modi has translated into this victory (in Jharkhand)," Shah said, referring to a state that has seen a as many as nine chief ministers in the past 14 years.

Earlier, state BJP president Ravindra Kumar Rai told media persons: "We will form a stable government in Jharkhand.

"We were hoping to get a two-third majority but have fallen short of the 50 seats we were hoping to win," he said.

Vote count that began in the morning showed that the BJP was coasting to victory. It could get around 40 seats, more than the 18 it held in the outgoing assembly.

Modi had addressed a number of rallies in the state in the run up to the five-phase polls.

"Forming government in Jharkhand is imminent," said Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar outside parliament in New Delhi.

The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) seemed set to improve its performance, bagging around 20 seats. It was an improvement from 18 seats that it won last time, but woefully short of the halfway mark.

The JVM was headed for victory on eight seats while the Congress was set to get four seats.

Almost all the exit polls after the five-phase election had predicted a BJP win in Jharkhand.

It was a day of big upsets, with even former chief ministers biting the dust.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren contested from two seats. He won from Barhait but was trailing in Dumka.

Former chief minister Madhu Koda, accused of corruption, lost the poll from Majhgao assembly seat.

Another former chief Minister, Babulal Marandi, was trailing in Dhanwar. Arjun Munda, also a former chief minister, trailed from Kharsawa seat.

The BJP, which contested the polls in alliance with the AJSU and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), fielded candidates in 72 seats. The AJSU had put up candidates in eight places. The LJP had one candidate.

The Congress contested 60 seats while its allies RJD fielded 19 candidates. The CPI and CPI-M fielded candidates respectively in 24 and 13 constituencies.

Srinagar, Feb 9: Authorities on Sunday snapped mobile internet services in Kashmir as a precautionary measure to prevent any law and order disturbance on the seventh death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru, officials said.

The mobile internet services were suspended early in the morning as the authorities apprehended violence in the valley in view of the bandh call given by separatist outfits, the officials said.

The authorities had restored 2G internet services in Kashmir on January 25, more than five months after snapping all communication facilities in the valley following abrogation of Article 370 on August 5 last year.

Police on Saturday lodged an FIR against the banned Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) for calling a strike on Afzal Guru's death anniversary.

Guru was hanged in 2013 inside Tihar jail for his role in the Parliament attack in December 2001.

Two journalists were summoned by police for reporting the JKLF press release, which had called for strike on Sunday and Tuesday -- the death anniversary of the outfit founder Mohammad Maqbool Bhat.

They were let off after five hours of questioning. Bhat was hanged in 1984 and is buried inside Tihar jail.

Meanwhile, normal life in Kashmir was affected due to the strike, the officials said.

Markets and business establishments remained closed, while public transport was largely off the roads, they said.

There have been no reports of any untoward incident from anywhere in the valley so far, the officials added.

New Delhi, Jul 20: Reiterating that China has still occupied India's territory, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that he has fabricated a fake strongman image to come to power which has now become India's biggest weakness as he has to protect the idea of 'Chhapan Inch'.

Taking to Twitter, the Congress leader posted a video message and wrote, "PM fabricated a fake strongman image to come to power. It was his biggest strength. It is now India's biggest weakness."

In the video message, speaking on "China's Strategic Game Plan" the Congress leader said: "What is China's strategic and tactical game plan? It is simply not a border issue. The worry I have is that the Chinese are sitting in our territory today. Chinese don't do anything without thinking about it strategically."

"In their mind, they have mapped out the world and they are trying to shape the world. That's the scale of what they are doing. That's what Gwadar is, that is what belt and road is. It is a restructuring of the planet. So when you are thinking about the Chinese you have to understand that that is the level at which they are thinking," he added.

Now at the tactical level, they're trying to improve their position. Whether it is Galwan, whether it's Demchok or whether it is Pangong Lake. The idea is to position themselves, he said.

"They are disturbed by our highway they want to make our highway redundant and if they are thinking larger scale, they want to do something with Pakistan in Kashmir. So it is not simply a border issue. It is a border issue designed to put pressure on the Prime Minister of India," the Congress leader said.

"And they are thinking of putting pressure in a very particular way. And what they are doing, is that they are attacking his image. They understand that it in order for Mr Narendra Modi to be an effective politician; in order for Mr Narendra Modi to survive as a politician, he has to protect the idea of--Chhapan Inch. And this the real idea the Chinese are attacking. They are basically telling Mr Narendra Modi that if you do not do what we say, we will destroy the idea of Mr Narendra Modi as a strong leader," he added.

Gandhi continued saying, now the question is, how will PM Narendra Modi react. Will he take them on? Will he take on the challenge and say absolutely not, I'm the Prime Minister of India. I do not care about my image I'm going to take you on. Or will he succumb to them?

"The worry I have so far is that the Prime Minister has succumbed. The worry I have is, the Chinese are sitting in our territory today and the Prime Minister has said publicly they are not, which to me tells me that is worried about his image and defending his image," said Gandhi.

"And if he allows the Chinese to understand that they can manipulate him because of his image, the Indian Prime Minister will no longer be worth anything for India," he added.
