BJP, SP spar over Saharanpur riot report; Cong, BSP blame both

August 17, 2014

New Delhi, Aug 17: BJP on Sunday dismissed the U.P. government panel report on Saharanpur riots which indicted its MP, terming it as “politically motivated” and a “camouflage” by the Akhilesh Yadav dispensation to hide its “failures”.

While ruling Samajwadi Party in U.P. alleged that the enquiry report had proved BJP’s involvement in the communal riots, the two parties came under attack from BSP and Congress which blamed them for the communal tension.saharnpur

“The perpetrators of the Saharanpur riots are trying to be the judge. So what is the meaning of this report.... The unfortunate incidents in Saharanpur could have been prevented if the administration and the state government had not shown a lackadaisical attitude,” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said.

The party claimed that the report indicts the UP Government and it should introspect and rectify its flaws.

“The report clearly indicts the state government and I think they feel obliged to cover up their tracks or put some camouflage by finding some means or way to attack BJP. I think they should worry about the flaws in the own conduct,” another party spokesperson M.J. Akbar said.

Attacking BJP, Samajwadi Party’s national general secretary Naresh Agarwal said, “As the role of a BJP MP has also come to the fore, we can say that the party (BJP) has a role in the Saharanpur incident.”

But the BJP questioned the findings with party’s UP spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak saying, “When there is an administrative failure, then how is BJP responsible for the clashes”.

He said SP was indulging in a blame game for political mileage.

“It is the report of the party and not the government. What do you expect from SP which has been blaming BJP time and again to conceal its own government’s failures,” Mr. Pathak alleged.

BJP MP Raghav Lakhanpal, who has been named by the five-member committee headed by UP minister Shivpal Yadav for allegedly inciting rioters, trashed the allegations, saying they reflected the “low level politics” of Samajawadi Party which was trying to “appease” a particular community ahead of Assembly by polls in Uttar Pradesh.

“It is politically motivated. I have been praised for my efforts to end to the violence and restore peace. The government should have thanked me instead of levelling false allegations,” the MP told PTI in Saharanpur.

The BSP supremo Mayawati targeted both Samajwadi Party and BJP, alleging that the two parties were hand in glove in fanning communal violence in the state.

The BSP leader said the “actual facts” are were buried and the report has little meaning.

“BJP and SP are hand in glove. The report has not put forth the actual facts. It has little meaning. We do not accept the report,” Ms. Mayawati said.

Congress too reacted sharply saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi should follow his words that communalism will not be tolerated and take up the issue “strictly” with his party men.

Congress leader Rashid Alvi said, “It is very painful. In Meerut, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Everywhere VHP and BJP members have been named. On one hand the Prime Minister, speaking from the Red Fort, tells the country that communalism will not be tolerated. On the other hand his party members indulge in such wrong activities. The PM should talk to his party workers strictly about it.”

The party also targeted Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party.

Congress leader Manish Tewari said Samajwadi Party government’s “incompetence” and BJP’s “communal politics” has led to the situation in UP and demanded that the central government take steps to maintain communal harmony.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he would not comment as it was a “report of a political party” and he had not seen it.

New Delhi, Feb 14: AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to his swearing-in ceremony scheduled to take place at the Ramlila Maidan on February 16, senior party leader Gopal Rai said on Friday.

Rai, the convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party's Delhi unit, said a letter was sent to the prime minister on Friday morning.

All seven Delhi MPs and eight newly-elected BJP MLAs have also been invited for the oath-taking ceremony, Rai told news agency.

No chief minister or political leaders from other states will be part of the event as it will be a "Delhi-specific" ceremony, Rai had said on Thursday.

Kejriwal, through front-page advertisements in newspapers, has urged Delhiites to attend his oath-taking ceremony as he is set to become the chief minister of Delhi for the third consecutive term.

Kejriwal will take oath as Delhi Chief minister along with his cabinet at Ramlila Maidan at 10 am on Sunday.

New Delhi, Mar 20: The four men convicted of the gang rape and murder of a Delhi woman on December 16, 2012 were hanged in the darkness of pre-dawn on Friday, ending a horrific chapter in India's long history of sexual assault that had seared the nation's soul. Mukesh Singh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31) were executed at 5.30 am for the savage assault in an empty moving bus on the 23-year-old physiotherapy intern who came to be known the world over as Nirbhaya, the fearless one.

This is the first time that four men have been hanged together in Tihar Jail, South Asia's largest prison complex that houses more than 16,000 inmates. The executions were carried out after the men exhausted every possible legal avenue to escape the gallows. Their desperate attempts only postponed the inevitable by less than two months after the first date of execution was set for January 22.

They were hanged at 5.30 am, Director General of Prison Sandeep Goel said.

After raping and brutalising the woman, the men, one of whom was a juvenile at the time, dumped her on the road and left for dead on the cold winter night. Her friend who was with her was also severely beaten and thrown out along with her. She was so severely violated that her insides were spilling out when she was taken to hospital. She died in a Singapore hospital after battling for her life for a fortnight.

Six people, including the four convicts and the juvenile, were named as accused.

While Ram Singh allegedly committed suicide in the Tihar Jail days after the trial began in the case, the juvenile was released in 2015 after spending three years in a correctional home.

The road to the gallows was a long and circuitous one, going through the lower courts, the High Court, the Supreme Court and the president's office before going back to the Supreme Court that heard and rejected various curative petitions.

The death warrants were deferred by a court thrice on the grounds that the convicts had not exhausted all their legal remedies and that the mercy petition of one or the other was before the president.

On March 5, a trial court issued fresh death warrants for March 20 at 5.30 am as the final date for the execution.

New Delhi, Feb 4: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday accused Arvind Kejriwal of having a "partnership" with Pakistan and appealed to the people in Delhi to not vote for the AAP chief as it will make Pakistan happy.

Ramping up his attack on the Shaheen Bagh protest, Adityanath said that the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is merely an excuse for people to vent their anger against the scrapping of Article 370.

"You must have seen their partnership on 370. Arvind Kejriwal used to speak in the same voice as Imran Khan on Article 370. You must have heard it.

"Now when elections are taking place in Delhi, who is speaking in favour of Arvind Kejriwal? It is the ministers of Pakistan. They are aware that Kejriwal is feeding 'biryani to protesters at Shaheen Bagh'," he said, referring to Pakistan minister Fawad Chaudhry's tweet asking Indians to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Adityanath addressed three rallies on Monday in the national capital ahead of assembly elections.

"Will Pakistan decide who Indians should vote for. If voting for Kejriwal will make Pakistan happy, should it be done," he asked at a rally in Mehrauli.

Adityanath said his Delhi counterpart Kejriwal has become a "toy in the hands of anti-social and anti-India elements".

Addressing a rally in Vikaspuri in west Delhi, he said that Kejriwal is not bothered about key issues such as providing clean drinking water but is concerned about Shaheen Bagh, the anti-citizenship amendment act protest site.

At another rally in Uttam Nagar in west Delhi, Adityanath said Kejriwal has played with the emotions of the people of Delhi for the last five years.

"He obstructed the development of Delhi. And knowingly and unknowingly, he became a toy in the hands of anti-social and anti-India elements," Adityanath said.

The protest at Shaheen Bagh, he said, has disrupted traffic across the capital.

"A guest with an appointment to meet him at 9.30 am could only reach at 11. He told me he had left as early as 7 am but got stuck because of the traffic in Shaheen Bagh," he said.

The Uttar Pradesh chief minister also slammed Kejriwal for "sympathising" with elements who he said gave anti-India slogans in Jawaharlal Nehru University.
