Bengaluru, Aug 29: The Bharatiya Janata Party led governments at the Centre and Karnataka are tapping phones of opposition leaders in the state including former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, former chief minister Siddaramaiah and KPCC president Dinesh Gundurao, according to Janata Dal (Secular).

JD(S) spokesperson Ramesh Babu on Wednesday alleged that a facility has been set up at Kaiga nuclear power plant in Uttara Kannada district and an IGP-rank officer posted to tap phones of political opponents. The allegation comes barely a week after the state government handed over phone-tapping allegations against the Congress-JD(S) coalition government led by HD Kumaraswamy to the CBI for investigation.

Disqualified JD(S) MLA AH Vishwanath and other BJP MLAs had accused the Kumaraswamy government of tapping their phones during the rebellion by Congress-JD(S) MLAs which eventually resulted in the coalition government’s collapse.

He said officials are posing as journalists and calling leaders of opposition parties to gather information and he had received one such call. “Somebody called me introducing himself has a journalist and asked about the Gowda and Siddaramaiah. When I expressed my doubts, he hung up immediately,” he added.
