Udupi, Jan 24: Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister for Human Resources Development, has predicted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would win all seats of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts and come to power in Karnataka with a two-thirds majority.

Addressing a meeting of the heads of various units of the BJP here on Tuesday, he said that the people were fed up with the four-and-a-half years rule of the Congress in the State. The Congress had got associated with corruption, hypocrisy and family. It was only the BJP which could give good governance in the State under the leadership of the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa.

He said, the BJP already had 19 States under its rule in the country. The only big State under the Congress was Karnataka. People were impressed by the leadership provided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the country. It was Mr. Modi who had given an impetus to the economy of the country.

He said that during the Congress rule, the transfer of IAS and IPS officers had become routine. The latest was that of the transfer of the Superintendent of Police of Dakshina Kannada Sudheer Kumar Reddy C.H. and Deputy Commissioner Rohini Sindhuri Dasari from Hassan despite public demand to retain them.

He said that it was unusual to effect so many transfers especially when the elections were nearing.

The Congress had little to solve the problem of sand shortage. While sand was available at Rs. 3,000 per truckload during Mr. Yeddyurappa’s rule, it was now being sold at Rs. 18,000 per truckload.

He said that the Goa government and its Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had wanted to resolve the Mahadayi water dispute, but it was the intransigent attitude of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah that was responsible for the breakdown in talks. The Congress MLAs in Goa too were opposed to a resolution of the dispute.

He said, over 20 activists of the Sangh Parivar had been murdered during the last four-and-a-half years, but no action had been taken. The withdrawal of cases against the Social Democratic Party of India, the Popular Front of India and the Karnataka Forum for Dignity was the reason for the murders, he said.

Though silt had accumulated in the dams at Baje and Shiroor in Udupi district, the State government had done little or nothing to remove it. With the result, the farmers were affected by it. But the Congress, an “anti-farmer party,” was least bothered about it, Mr. Javadekar said.

Mangaluru, Feb 8: A speeding car fell off the newly-inaugurated Pumpwell flyover in the city after jumping the median and ramming into an oncoming car today.

At least four persons have suffered injuries in the mishap involving a Maruti Alto and a Renault Duster. The condition of two is said to be extremely critical. The other two have suffered minor injuries.

The accident took place when the driver of the speeding Alto which was heading towards Kasaragod from Udupi lost control over his vehicle.

Towards the end of the flyover, car rammed into the divider and then hit the ill-fated Renault Duster which was coming from the opposite direction. The Alto then fell off the bridge.

The accident caused traffic jam on the highway for some time. The flyover was inaugurated a week ago, after a decade long wait.

Chikkamagaluru, Feb 21: Alleged Bharatiya Janata Party supporters threw stones at Amulya Leona’s father’s house at Gullagadde near Koppa on Thursday night, after she was charged for making objectionable remarks at a public programme in Bengaluru.

Amulya Leona’s father Wazi said that the incident, which left window panes and doors damaged, took place at around 7.30 p.m. “They are all BJP supporters. They were in a group. I have complained to the police with the names of a few who led the group,” he said.

Three policemen have been deployed at his house since Thursday night.

Amulya Leona, a B.A. student, was charged with sedition after she raised pro-Pakistan slogans at a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Bengaluru.

Mr. Wazi, who owns a two-acre areca plantation and runs a poultry farm, said he condemned the statement made by his daughter and he would not make any attempts to get her bail. “Let the law take its course. I cannot approve of her statement,” he said.

He said he had cautioned his daughter against getting involved in protests. “I told her to complete studies first and later she could fight for poor people. But what she said yesterday is not acceptable. I don’t know what made her so. I hope a probe would bring out who prompted her to make such statements,” he said.

Mr. Wazi said he has been politically active for several years, and had earlier worked for former education minister H.G. Govinde Gowda. He then shifted to the BJP and worked in support of D.N. Jeevaraj, who represented Sringeri constituency last time, and current Udupi-Chickmagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje. “I have worked for the BJP in the past. As Govinde Gowda’s son contested on JD(S) ticket for Sringeri seat, I supported him”, he said.

Meanwhile, a video clip that went viral on Thursday night showed a group of Bajrang Dal activists compelling Mr. Wazi to shout ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’. “I have no hesitation in raising ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ slogans,” said Mr. Wazi, adding that his statement was taken forcibly. “I am a patriot. Many writers, activists and politicians have come to my place over the years,” he said.
