BJP’s Hindutva is dividing society; will never join hands with it: HDK

Even as Janata Dal (Secular) is trying to woo Muslims in poll-bound Karnataka, its state president H D Kumaraswamy, who had once formed a coalition government with the BJP, has declared that he would not join hands with the saffron party in future.

Replaying to queries of media persons in Bengaluru, the former chief minister said that his party would opt for a “democratic and secular party which respects the Constitution” if compelled to form a coalition post the 2018 Assembly polls in Karnataka.

While not directly naming Congress as the party that he would choose over the BJP, he said in an interview with The Hindu that the saffron party’s “aggressive Hindutva agenda was dividing society, which is essentially its character.”

It could be recalled here that Mr Kumaraswamy has stated earlier this year that the biggest enemy of JD(S) was Congress and not BJP.

However, on Sunday Mr Kumaraswamy said that there is an undeclared emergency in the country. “If the democratic and secular forces fail to counter the juggernaut of communal, anti-democratic forces, no one can save this country. That is why there is no question of joining hands with the BJP under any circumstances,” he added.

Bengaluru, Apr 19: With six new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, Karnataka's total count of coronavirus patients has surged to 390, said the State's Health Department on Sunday.

"Six new cases have been confirmed for COVID-19 in the State from 5 pm yesterday till 5 pm today. Cumulatively, 390 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state," said the Health Department in a statement.

The total coronavirus cases in the State include 16 deaths and 111 discharges.

Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan said that "only essential and critical number of" employees of the Information Technology (IT) companies will be allowed to work from offices from April 20 onwards in Bengaluru, while others will have to continue working from home.

According to the latest update by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of positive cases in India has mounted to 16,116 and 519 deaths have been reported till now.

Bengaluru, Mar 3: Chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday introduced the Karnataka Municipalities and Certain Other Law (Amendment) Bill, 2020, in the assembly to give voters the opportunity to reject candidates in civic polls.

The bill, if passed, will enable election officials to offer the NOTA option in the elections to municipal corporations on the lines of assembly and Lok Sabha polls.

An amendment bill which seeks to enable the government to set up a separate university for the districts of Raichur and Yadgir was also tabled. The government said the workload of Gulbarga University necessitated creation of a separate university for the two districts, a move that will also help reduce regional imbalance in Kalyana Karnataka region.

Another amendment bill seeks to allow industrial units, which have failed to start operations on allotted land after seven years, to sell off the parcels to another unit. Bills which empower authorised agencies to regulate turf clubs and horse racing and regulate salary and pension of teachers in higher education institutions were also introduced in the assembly on Monday.
