BJP's Krishna still 'hangs around' in Cong office

Bengaluru, Sept 17: Senior leader S M Krishna may have jumped the ship to join the BJP, but the Congress does not want to let go of him. Well, at least not his portrait that hangs in the party head office.

Drama prevailed at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on Queen’s Road on Saturday as two party workers — Sardar Sharif and Shafiullah — removed Krishna’s portrait because “he cheated the party”. The two were suspended.

All the former KPCC presidents’ portraits are hung on the first floor in the party head office on Queen’s Road. Krishna’s was hung between Dharam Singh and V S Koujalagi. “Why should we have Krishna’s portrait even after he deserted the party?” a section of workers opined, as they removed the portrait. Other party workers tried to stop them, but Shariff and Shafiullah paid no heed. They fled the office after removing the portrait.

All this happened while Parameshwara, AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka KC Venugopal and KPCC working president Dinesh Gundu Rao were in a meeting to discuss the 2018 Assembly polls.

Parameshwara and Rao rushed out and took the party workers to task. They ensured the portrait was restored to its original place. “Krishna has served as chief minister and party president. He may have left the party, but we still respect him. It’s wrong to remove his portrait,” Parameshwara and Rao were heard telling other party workers.

Krishna, who was the chief minister from 1999 to 2004, quit the Congress in January this year and formally joined the BJP in March. He did so saying Congress was “in a state of confusion” on whether it needed mass leaders or not.

Mumbai, May 30: Former Bollywood actress Zaira Wasim has deleted her Twitter and Instagram accounts after being heavily trolled for quoting from the Quran while talking about locust attacks.

"So We sent upon them the flood and locusts and lice and frogs and blood: Signs openly self explained: but they were steeped in arrogance -- a people given to sin. --Qur'an 7:133," Zaira had tweeted.

Soon, she started receiving hateful comments from netizens who interpreted her post as a justification of the locust attacks. They felt that Zaira was suggesting that the incident is God's way of expressing wrath.

Shortly after being deluged with such comments, Zaira Wasim deleted her Twitter and Instagram accounts.

However, a section of netizens continue to attack Zaira on her Facebook page, where she put up the same post.

Commenting on the post, a user wrote: "Lady you must have taken into account of those people of JK, Kerala and elsewhere who are also suffering from the virus. Moreover the crops which are damaged by locust had no name as to who will consume them. In this hours of crisis please post something which is positive and reflects your education."

Another user shared: "So according to you, with all due respect every year on the same time period, Allah send locust to India to destroy the crops of poor farmers who are not even involve in the industrial rise, who don't use vehicle to destroy the nature, and Allah send locust only to harm the poor farmers and not the rich one who actually destroy nature."

"So those farmers who lost there fields of crops and will probably go into debt and may also commit suicide, those farmers who feed the nation, who feed you and every one, are sinners?" asked yet another user.

However, there were a few on social media who felt Zaira had done nothing wrong.

"Quoting Quranic Verse is not a crime... Why is every Indian abusing @ZairaWasimmm. She didn't mention any particular nation or religion. I request everyone please stand with #ZairaWasim. She needs our support. #ISupportZairaWasim," goes a tweet.

Bengaluru, May 27: Amidst helpless calls for learning to live with coronavirus and make a new beginning, the government of Karnataka is considering to reopen schools in the state from July 1.

Primary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar discussed the issue with the officials from the department at a meeting held on Tuesday.

The expert committee in its report submitted to the Union Ministry for Human Resource Development recommended reopening of schools on July 1. The state department of primary and secondary education also discussed the issue.

However, no decision has been taken yet and final decision is expected to out in a day or two. A source said that since the timetable for SSLC examination had been published and the lockdown was expected to be lifted after May 31, it had been planned to reopen the schools on July 1.

Following the recent representation by several academicians and social activists urging to cancel SSLC exams, the primary education minister met chief minister and briefed him about preparations for the safe conduct of exams.

“As of now there will not be any changes in SSLC exam schedule. We have reviewed the situation and preparations are underway for ensuring safety of children,” the source added.

The report submitted by Nimhans about online education is yet to reach the secretariat.
