Mangaluru, Aug 21: The national president and other senior leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party, who were in the city to participate in Tiranga Yatra, tried to give a new definition to “nationalism” by depicting those who raise voice against union government as anti-nationals.

Speaking at a public meet organized by the saffron party in the name of 'Balidana Smarane' (honouring martyrs) on Mangaluru University campus as part of the Tiranga Yatra', BJP supremo Amit Shah accused the Congress party of backing anti-national ideologies.

Making a veiled attack on those who condemn Hindutva nationalism of BJP and promote secular nationalism, the BJP chief said that some people misuse freedom of speech to camouflage their anti-national sentiments. "Such people should be isolated," he said.

In the backdrop of the controversy over an Amnesty International India (AII) event in Bengaluru, where “anti-national” slogans were allegedly raised, Mr Shah said that people of the country should unite against “those anti-nationals”.

Mr Shah also seized the opportunity to promote his party with an eye on next Assembly polls and called B S Yeddyurappa, who was present on the stage as “Chief Minister in-waiting.” Responding to their leader's statement, the jubilant BJP workers began to raise slogans in support of Mr Yeddyurappa.

Abbakka to be honoured

Prior to this Mr Shah garlanded the statue of Rani Abbakka at Ullal Circle. Abbakka Utsav Samithi president Dinkar Ullal submitted a representation to Mr Shah urging the Union government to name Mangaluru International Airport after Rani Abbakka. Also, at least one train starting from Mangaluru Railway Station should be named after Abbakka, the forum has requested the government in the memorandum.

The Samithi said one circle each in New Delhi, Bengaluru and Mangaluru should be named after Abbakka. The life story of Abbakka should be included in primary and high school curriculum. A theme park on Abbakka should be set up on 10 acres of land at Ullal, the Samithi has demanded.

The security was beefed up for Shah's programme. Senior police officers monitored the security arrangements. Along with CRPF Commandoes, a large number of police were deployed at the venue. IGP (Western range) Arun Chakravarthy, DCPs K M Shantharaju, Dr Sanjeev Paril and others had camped at the venue till the end of the programme.

Mangaluru, Mar 30: In continuing cases of tipplers in the southern states ending their lives due to non-availability of liquor during the lockdown, two men committed suicide in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district.

The two suicides were reported in Kadaba taluk on Saturday, police said.

Tomy Thomas (50), a rubber tapping labourer in an estate at Kutrupadi village of the taluk, was found hanging at his rented house on Saturday. Thomas, a native of Kottayam in Kerala, had joined at the estate here a month ago.

Local people said he was desperately moving around in the last few days asking about places where he can get liquor. He had also not reported to work in these days. The body has been kept at the mortuary of a hospital at Deralakatte.

In another incident, a 70-year old man, belonging to Kodimbala village in the taluk, allegedly hanged himself from the branch of a tree near his house at Nakur.

The deceased has been identified as Thomas, who had left his family here 30 years ago and had been working in Kerala. He had returned here only a few years back.

Sources said Thomas, an alcohol addict, was having health problems related to withdrawal. He has been living on pavements at Kadaba without going home.

Kadaba police has registered cases in connection with the two incidents.

Incidents of tipplers committing suicide have been reported in Kerala and Telangana in the past few days. Two men ended their lives in Kerala today while a 50-year old daily wage worker jumped to death from a building in Hyderabad on Friday.

Bengaluru, Jun 9: JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda on Tuesday filed his nomination as party's candidate for June 19 Rajya Sabha elections from Karnataka.

The former Prime Minister was accompanied by his sons former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and former Minister H D Revanna, state JD(S) chief H K Kumaraswamy and others, as he filed his papers at the office of Legislative Assembly Secretary M K Vishalakshi, who is the returning officer for the polls. JD(S) on Monday had announced that Gowda will be contesting the Rajya Sabha polls.

Announcing the decision, Kumaraswamy had said Gowda decided to contest following the request of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, several national leaders and party legislators, and it was not an easy task to "persuade" him to enter the Rajya Sabha.

The JD(S), which has 34 seats in the assembly, is not in a position to win a seat in Rajya Sabha on its own and will need support from the Congress with its surplus votes. A minimum of 45 votes are required for a candidate to win. If he wins, this will be the second Rajya Sabha entry for 87-year-old Gowda, the first time being in 1996 as the Prime Minister.

Gowda was defeated in Tumkur constituency by BJP's G S Basavaraj by over 13,000 votes in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. As joint candidate of the then ruling Congress-JDS coalition, Gowda had chosen to contest from Tumkur at the last minute after vacating Hassan-his home turf, to grandson Prajwal Revanna (a current MP).

Election is scheduled on June 19 to fill four Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka, represented by Rajeev Gowda and BK Hariprasad of Congress, Prabhakar Kore of the BJP and D Kupendra Reddy of JD(S) that will fall vacant on June 25, with their retirement. Today is the last date for filing nominations. With BJP not fielding any candidate against Gowda, his election is likely to be unanimous.
