Bantwal, Jun 21: In spite of the prolonged prohibitory orders and tightened security measures, violence has recurred in Bantwal taluk. This time miscreants have brutally murdered an activist of Social Democratic Party of India at Benjanapadavu village in broad daylight.

The victim has been identified as Mohammed Ashraf (33) a resident of Malluru Kalai and president of the SDPI’s Ammunje unit in Bantwal. He was an auto rickshaw driver by profession.

According to sources, the miscreants attacked Ashraf after he dropped a passenger who had hired his auto rickshaw from Kalai to Karavali Site at Benganapadavu near Kallige on Wednesday morning.murder11

The gang of armed miscreants who came on three motorbikes surrounded Ashraf all of a sudden when he had parked his three-wheeler in front of a house. A helpless Ashraf ran inside a house to save himself from the assailants.

However the miscreants barged into the house and dragged him out before brutally attacking him with lethal weapons. While fleeing, the miscreants have left a sword on the floor of the house.

Earlier in the day Ashraf had participated in SDPI’s flag hoisting ceremony as part of the foundation day of the party at Kalai. Later, he led a shramadan programme at Kalai and filled potholes on the road along with local residents.

The body was shifted to AJ Hospital in Mangaluru for post mortem before handing over to the family members. Dozens of SDPI activists thronged the hospital when the mortal remains were brought the hospital.

The fresh murder has triggered tension across Bantwal taluk. People in Kalladka and Melkar villages of taluk are observing a bandh in protest against the violence.

In the wake of murder, Dakshina Kannada district administration is likely to extend prohibitory orders in Bantwal taluk. As per earlier order, the Section 144 under CrPC ends tonight.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: Students and teachers from various colleges in Bengaluru gathered at the Town Hall in the city to protest against the violence which broke out at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus in New Delhi on January 5.

The students raised slogans against Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Police.

Placards that read 'The more you attack, the stronger we become', 'Take off your masks terrorist', 'With JNU' were seen during the protest.

"We are here to protest against the incident that took place at JNU with our brothers and sisters. What Delhi Police did was shameful and they should have taken charge of the situation long before and not waited for three hours. We stand with JNU," Nisha, a protestor told ANI.

Professors present at the protest expressed regret over the incident and said attacks on the universities is a sick situation in the country.

"This is sick, where have we come to -- violence in the universities? I was so safe when I was studying in college; what we are giving to our students is horrible," said Sangeeta, a professor present at the protest.

Politicians, cutting across party lines, have condemned the attack on students in JNU and demanded strict action against those found guilty.

More than 18 students were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre after a masked mob entered the JNU campus and attacked them and some professors with sticks and rods.

Bengaluru, July 23: The Janta Dal (Secular) and Congress that had joined hands together in Karnataka ‘to keep communal forces at bay, have once again turned archrivals. The development comes a year after the collapse of JD(S)-Congress coalition government in the state.

Recently, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah claimed that the Congress would have won at least 10 seats in the Lok Sabha elections had it not been for the alliance with the JD(S). In response, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy of the JD(S), who headed the coalition government, blamed the Congress for its many 'conspiracies'.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Kumaraswamy said he was prompted by Siddarmaiah's claims to recall what transpired during the coalition government.

"There will never be a future alliance with Congress," Kumaraswamy declared, in a letter to his party colleagues on Wednesday. He claimed that there were many conspiracies on part of Congress, which led to the fall of the coalition government.

Bengaluru, Jul 22: Congress MLA Priyank Kharge has questioned the Karnataka government on the alleged breakdown of oxygen in the intensive care unit (ICU) at ESIC hospital in Kalaburagi, saying he had got complaints that eight persons who were on ventilators had died.

He asked the government if it is "deliberately" hiding something about the patients that were admitted in ESIC.

"I have got complaints that eight people who were on ventilators are dead in ESIC Kalaburagi because there was oxygen breakdown in ICU. ESIC has not been admitting patients as the issue has not been resolved. Nobody is confirming or denying it. Is the Government deliberately hiding something?" he asked.
Kharge also accused the government of not having adequate facilities to combat COVID-19 in different parts of the state.

"I hope I am wrong, but if it is a fact, this ascertains that the administration has lost control over Corona pandemic in the district. No addition testing centre. No beds are available. PPE Kits and medical waste is thrown in Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS)," he added.

According to the Union Health Ministry, there are 67420 COVID-19 cases in the state.
