Bluestar anniversary: 12 injured in a clash at Golden Temple

June 7, 2015

Amritsar, Jun 7: Twelve people were injured in a clash between a group of armed youths and members of the task force of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) at the Golden Temple here on Saturday.

Golden Temple

The injured include four members of the task force. Two of the injured, with multiple injuries, were admitted to the civil hospital.

The incident took place in the afternoon, long after the commemoration ceremony in memory of those killed in Operation Bluestar had concluded peacefully at the Akal Takht. The cops stationed inside the shrine rushed to the aid of the task force members.

Perhaps the peaceful conclusion of the function at the Akal Takht did not go down well with the youths who had come for the purpose of creating trouble. After failing to whip up communal passions during the function, some of the youngsters stayed back. They were also infuriated as the police had taken some of their colleagues into custody from outside the shrine after the function.

The confrontation took place in the shrine 'parikarma', near Beri Baba Buddha Sahib when the task force asked the youths to move out of the shrine. This led to heated exchanges and the youths, with swords in their hands, attacked the task force members who were armed with sticks. Soon, cops in civil clothes overpowered some of the youths.

Blood spilled on to the marbled 'parikarma' and turbans fell to the ground. The cops caught hold of some of the youths and dragged them out of the shrine into the waiting vehicles.

Justifying the action, SGPC additional secretary Daljit Singh Bedi said, "These youths remained inside after the ceremony had concluded and kept taking rounds of the shrine shouting pro-Khalistan and pro-Bhindrawale slogans. When we requested them to move out they attacked the task force members."

Bedi said they had seen some of the youths for the first time. A few had short hair over which turbans had been tied; an inquiry is needed to identify these elements, he added.

Peaceful conclusion of ceremony

The clash took place five hours after the conclusion of 31st anniversary of Operation Bluestar at the Akal Takht. The large police presence inside the shrine had earlier thwarted the designs of these youths to create trouble.

While in the afternoon, around 25 youths were detained, in the morning around 15 were taken into custody after their attempts to enter the Akal Takht were thwarted. They were picked up by the police from the narrow lanes around the shrine.

DCP Parampal Singh confirmed that around 40 youths had been detained. He said they would verify the groups to which they belonged and their motive behind coming to Amritsar and attending the function. He clarified that most of those involved in the clash were outsiders.

Barring the raising of pro-Khalistan slogans by supporters of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) in the 'parikarma' of the shrine, the bhog ceremony passed off peacefully. The activists were led by their senior vice-president Dhian Singh Mand.

Even in the vicinity of the shrine, the cops were stationed in strength. A company of the BSF was also pressed into service for maintaining peace.

Police presence in shrine

The large presence of the police ensured that no one created trouble inside the shrine. Cops in civil clothes could be seen all around the 'parikarma' and inside the Akal Takht.

As the ceremony concluded after Giani Gurbachan Singh read out his message to the community, a group of around 30 youths, some armed with sharp-edged weapons, marched aggressively towards the Akal Takht building. However, the police and task force prevented them from going there.

The youths retreated but were shadowed by the cops inside the shrine. Thinking that the police intended to arrest them, some of the youths tried to escape through the narrow lane of Atta Mandi and other areas. However, the cops chased them and even used lathis to push them into waiting vehicles, that took them to a police station, where they are still under detention. A case is likely to be registered against them.

Jathedar's message

In his message, Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh called for unity in the Sikh community. He also focused on drug addiction and female foeticide.

The jathedar called for bringing about an awakening among the Sikh masses. He felt that this movement of awakening should begin in schools and colleges. He stressed on inculcating values among the youth.

The jathedar honoured Ishar Singh, son of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, by presenting him a sirpoa.

Barring Amritsar (rural) district SAD president Veer Singh Lopoke, no other senior leader of the ruling Akali faction was present.

After initial fears among devotees, normalcy returned to the shrine. Soon after the clash a number of devotees who were inside the shrine moved to 'safer' areas within the complex.

Mumbai, Jul 13: In a significant landmark, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has achieved a doubling-rate of 50 days for COVID-19 cases, a top official said on Monday.

This was possible because of the civic body's 'open testing policy', implying tests without prescriptions, making it the only city in the country to implement it.

"After the open testing policy, our testing has gone up from 4,000 to 6,800, daily. But the total positive cases have come down from 1,400 to 1,200 now," BMC Municipal Commissioner I.S. Chahal told IANS.

Of these 1,200 positive cases, the symptomatic cases are less than 200, so the BMC needs only 200 beds daily, the civic chief said.

Even the BMC's discharge rate now stands at 70 percent, and on Sunday, after allotting beds to all patients, there were still 7,000 COVID beds plus 250 ICU beds lying vacant, said Chahal.

For this achievement, Chahal gave the credit to the entire 'Team BMC' where - despite losing a little over 100 officials to the virus - civic officials and other Corona warriors are engaged 24x7 in controlling the pandemic for over four months.

Since the first case was detected in Mumbai on March 11 (after the state's first infectees in Pune on March 9) and the state's first death notched in Mumbai on March 17, the current Maharashtra Covid-19 tally stands at 2,54,427 cases and fatalities at 10,289, while Mumbai has recorded 92,988 cases with a death toll of 5,288.

Hyderabad, Jul 13: Family members of Telugu poet and writer Varavara Rao, who is currently lodged in Navi Mumbai's Taloja jail in the Bhima Koregaon case, on Sunday appealed to the government for his immediate release in view of his deteriorating health.

Rao's wife P. Hemalatha and their three daughters urged the government to save his life by shifting him to a hospital or allow them to provide him with immediate medical care.

We want to remind the government that it has no right to deny the right to life of any person, much less an undertrial prisoner," they said.

His family members said they were very much worried about his deteriorating health. They said his health condition had been scary for over six weeks, ever since he was shifted in an unconscious state to JJ Hospital on May 28.

"Even as he was discharged from the hospital and sent back to jail three days later, there has been no improvement in his health and he is still in need of emergency healthcare," Hemalatha said.

"The immediate cause of concern now is that we are very much perturbed at the routine phone call we received from him on Saturday evening. Though the earlier two calls on June 24 and July 2 were also worrying with his weak and muffled voice, incoherent speech and abruptly jumping into Hindi. But the latest call, on July 11 is much more worrisome as he did not answer straight questions on his health and went into a kind of delirious and hallucinated talk about the funeral of his father and mother, the events that happened seven decades and four decades ago respectively," Rao's wife said.

She said her husband's co-accused companion took the phone from him and informed her that he is not able to walk, go to the toilet and brush his teeth on his own.

"We were also told that he is always hallucinating that we, family members, were waiting at the jail gate to receive him as he was getting released. His co-prisoner also said he needs immediate medical care for not only physical but also neurological issues. The confusion, loss of memory and incoherence are the results of electrolyte imbalance and fall of Sodium and Potassium levels leading to brain damage. This electrolyte imbalance may be fatal also."

Stating that Taloja Jail Hospital is not well equipped to handle this kind of serious ailment, they demanded that he be shifted to a fully equipped super specialty hospital to save his life and prevent possible brain damage and risk to life due to electrolyte imbalance.

"At the present juncture we are leaving aside all the pertinent facts like, that the case against him is fabricated; he had to spend 22 months in jail as an undertrial with the process turned into punishment; his bail petitions got rejected at least five times now and even the bail petitions with his age, ill-health and COVID vulnerability as grounds were ignored. His life is the top most concern for us right now. Our present demand is to save his life," the family said.

New Delhi, Feb 11: Celebrations broke out at the AAP headquarters here as early vote-counting trends for the Delhi Assembly polls on Tuesday showed a comfortable victory for the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led party.

The headquarters were decorated with blue and white balloons and big cut-outs of Kejriwal were placed in different parts of the party office.

"We knew it. We have changed the politics of this country. Now it is Delhi, next is India," said Sanjeev Singh, a party volunteer from Hari Nagar.

Another volunteer Fareen Khan said, "We hope we get such a clear majority that a message goes out that doing Hindu-Muslim politics will not work anymore."

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is leading in 26 seats while the BJP is leading in 14 seats, according to early trends by the Election Commission.

According to the EC's website, AAP convenor Kejriwal is leading in his New Delhi constituency.
